The world will experience global cooling this year, according a leading climate scientist.

The head of the World Meteorological Organisation said La Nina - the weather phenomenon which is cooling the Pacific - is likely to trigger a small drop in average global temperatures compared with last year.

The prediction - which follows a bitterly cold winter in China and the Arctic - is prompting some sceptics to question the theory of climate change.

The news that the earth appears to be cooling would seem to contradict most experts who say that global warming is melting ice at the Poles

The REAL inconvenient truth: Zealotry over global warming could damage our Earth far more than climate change

However, the World Meteorological Organisation insists that this year's cooling has nothing to do with global climate change.

In fact, this year's temperatures could still be way above the average - and it is possible that 2008 will exceed the record year of 1998 because of global warming induced by greenhouse gases.

La Nina is Spanish for "The Girl" and describes a cooling of the central and eastern Pacific.

It typically lasts for 12 months. In recent months it caused one of the coldest winters in memory in China, and brought torrential rains to Australia.

While La Nina can affect weather around the world, it is usually less of an influence than El Nino (The Boy). In an El Nino year, the Pacific warms up.

Michel Jarraud, the World Meteorological Organisation's secretary general, said La Nina was expected to continue into the summer, depressing global temperatures by a fraction of a degree.

But he said temperatures in 2008 would still be well above average for the last 100 years.

What? I'm confused.

I'm sure Reason will be here in a few moments to straighten you and myself out C.B. But this El Nino and La Nina that you are talking about are the very ones that I was explaining in the posts about how in the hell can they be trusted to predict Global Warming when they can't even predict OR Understand fully, La Nina or El Nino and those occur roughly every four years...

There is an agenda being pushed by the globalists.

And now it's being called "climate change" instead of "global warming"-- it's still people who think they know best and should be able to tell everyone else what to do.

All I know is there was some global warming in my front yard this morning while I was trimming the hedges. I could have used a melting iceberg. :smt118

The takeaway from the above story is:

I still don't understand why anyone has a problem with climate change. It's not a debate anymore. It is happening, and we are responsible. The overwhelming majority of climate scientists are in agreement over this.

If you think you know more than a few thousand scientists who have devoted their lives to studying the environment, you are a moron.

Don't bring up the global cooling scare a few decades ago, I've explained that before as a media-created fiasco much like school shootings and shark attacks today.

Also, don't say, "Well it sure was cold this winter. I thought we were supposed to be worried about global warming." That makes you seem woefully ignorant - because you are. Try doing some research on your own.

Oh, and don't go finding some old petition or some small contigent of those who deny the facts. In every instance you can easily disprove those guys because credible sources have already done the work for you to show how wrong they are.

Actually, I find it amusing that this has become a fringe conservative issue when it seem completley apolitical to me.

And now it's being called "climate change" instead of "global warming"-- it's still people who think they know best and should be able to tell everyone else what to do.

No, it's still called global warming. But, that's just one element of overall climate change.

statistics say that we only produce world wide 2% of the green house gas that creates global warming. So I guess if we have to blame something lets blame Mother Nature for commiting suicide. We are just along for the ride be it a heat wave or an ice age.

Global whateverthehell is a damn scam. Period, it's a ploy to prevent large corporations (whom I also despise) from being able to function as an entity. It also serves to undermine our sovereignty. The Kyoto Protocols, a joke. Global warming, cooling, climate change yadda yadda yadda. It's all a big joke. When the ice age ended, were there vehicles and other greenhouse gas producing 'things' around? No. If anything, it's a natural progression. Not vehicles, not industries, not cows (methane from gas from a cow is also to blame according to some). I friggin give up. I am a conspiracy theorist through and through and I DO NOT BELIEVE this is real.

I agree with you hendrixfreak, but calling it a conspiracy is a little strong, don't you think? I mean, what, you think guys in black suits and sunglasses will suddenly show up at your door and take you....what? Oh, no!....:fed2::fed:

It's not a debate anymore.Yes it is

It is happening, and we are responsible.Climate change has been happening since the beginning of time with temperatures much higher and much cooler than now. And we aren't responsible.

The overwhelming majority of climate scientists are in agreement over this. That isn't true.

If you think you know more than a few thousand scientists who have devoted their lives to studying the environment, you are a moron. Are you a moron for disbelieving the many thousands of scientists who say that there is no catastrophic climate change caused by humans?

Don't bring up the global cooling scare a few decades ago, I've explained that before as a media-created fiasco much like school shootings and shark attacks today. The global cooling scare a few years ago was a media created fiasco just as this global warming scare is a media created fiasco.

Also, don't say, "Well it sure was cold this winter. I thought we were supposed to be worried about global warming." That makes you seem woefully ignorant - because you are. Try doing some research on your own.I do plenty of research on this subject on my own.

Oh, and don't go finding some old petition or some small contigent of those who deny the facts. In every instance you can easily disprove those guys because credible sources have already done the work for you to show how wrong they are. It's much easier to disprove those that sign petitions claiming that we are causing global warming.

Actually, I find it amusing that this has become a fringe conservative issue when it seem completely apolitical to me.It's very political to you. You claim it's a fringe conservative issue but it is just as much or more a liberal issue. When you look at the solutions proposed by those claiming we are causing global warming, you see exactly where they are heading and their goals.

No black suits, tin foil hats, UFO sightings or anything like that. I think that global warming in and of itself to be a conspiracy to undermine our sovereignty etc. I don't believe in global warming, therefore I do not believe it as a conspiracy. I prolly just made no sense right there, but oh well.

Click "more" on the smiles panel and they will show up.

Remington, all I can say is "Amen, brother." This global warming scare is just a scheme to enact laws that the liberals want to put into place but can't get the common folk to go along with unless they are scared into thinking the world is about to melt.

I read a post recently concerning "smart growth" in Petal. Do some further research into "smart growth", and it seems that we humans are the source of all that`s wrong with the planet (according to the think tank responsible for "smart growth"). The plan is to gradually reduce human beings from more and more geographical areas into less and less areas, essentially consolidating more of us into extremely urban areas while allowing more and more of the planet to return to its wild "natural" state. If you think the folks pushing climate change legislation aren`t behind it, think again. There is an agenda.
