The billboard and press campaign, created by advertising agency Teran\TBWA and now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an "Absolut" -- i.e., perfect -- world.

The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California.

Following the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo saw the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México ceded to the United States to become modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. (Texas actually split from Mexico several years earlier to form a breakaway republic, and was voluntarily annexed by the United States in 1846.)

The campaign taps into the national pride of Mexicans, according to Favio Ucedo, creative director of leading Latino advertising agency Grupo Gallegos in the U.S., which was not involved in the Absolut campaign.

Ucedo, who is from Argentina, said: “Mexicans talk about how the Americans stole their land, so this is their way of reclaiming it. It’s very relevant and the Mexicans will love the idea.”

But he said that were the campaign to run in the United States, it might fall flat.

this kinda pisses me off.

I don't think I'll buy another bottle of Absolut again. In fact, I can guarantee it. Maybe it's petty and not PC, but it's how I feel... one of them opinions.

Absolut is sh*tty vodka, anyway. Now they add sh*tty political overtones to their ads.

Screw 'em. I drink Luksosova, made from 'taters, not that grain alcohol swill.

Incidentally, I think one or all of the bourbon distillers ought to put out an ad with the old texas flag on it, the one with the lone star over the cannon which says "COME AND TAKE IT."

Let the games begin.

My roommate at Quantico was Chief Deputy of Gonzales County, TX. They still have the cannon! That is also the county motto. Didn't know it was a Texas-wide thing, he made it sound like it was a small little ol' local battle.

A small-town battle it may have been, but the spirit behind the those Texans and the motto they adopted is an inspiration to me in this age of puling, whining, feminine males who think nothing is worth fighting for.

Besides - why waste your time and money on vodka when Jameson and Bushmills are still making Irish whiskey? :smt023

Jameson's is my Irish whiskey of choice, knocked back in a shot glass followed by a swig of Guinness.

Booker's is my favorite bourbon. A small amount (HA) over a few cubes of good ice...lip smacking good.

Goslings Black Seal rum is good when I'm looking for something different.

I have a Pirate friend who at one time would have told you he was a decedent of Capt. Morgan, he's gotten old and senile as of late though.

Jameson's is good stuff....brings out the Irish in me....I'd like to thank the hot, smokin' bartender at The Rise bar in the Hard Rock Casino for suggesting Jameson's...I only went with it because her bombs were busting out of her shirt, but it worked out well for all of us!

but there are much more important things going on in the world to get bent out of shape about rather than a crappy vodka ad in mexico of all places

i mean jesus christ...theyre trying to sell vodka in mexico... they have to do anything and everything they can to sell it...

personally i get bent out of shape seeing CEOs that drive the company into the ground but get well over 100 million in severance

I'm not bent out of shape... much.

I get a bit miffed when companies or people smile to your face to get you to buy something, then bad mouth you or make fun of you to sell to someone else. **** them.

I won't buy it, I'm sure I'm not the only one who will stop buying it.

How are they bad-mouthing or making fun, though? In an absolut world in Mexico, that territory would still be part of Mexico...not the US.

External frame of reference, anyone?

Yeah, I'm not stupid. I get it. I know where the ad is being viewed and who the target audience is. It doesn't make me accept the ad any more, though.

if they advertise 'absolut vodka for 8 bucks' and theres a picture of a fifth, and i show up and find that its only the airline bottle for 8 bucks...then yeah im gonna be pissed

but if its just a branding campaign....

What's your point? Just because someone does something good, they're allowed to, for lack of a better term, disrespect a country that probably consumes a fair amount of their product?

I don't understand what's to be offended about or how it's disrespectful. And I think that people who are in a twist about it are making a fairly tenuous connection and promoting that whole arrogant American stereotype.

It's about Mexico, not the United States. Although we certainly have managed to insert ourselves into.

Like I said...some external perspective. Most things in the world aren't about us, and we aren't a consideration for most people in the world. We sure like to think we're the center of the world, though.

I have plenty of external perspective. I completely understand the context and meaning of the ad. But it doesn't mean I can be offended by it. Just because the message wasn't meant for me, doesn't mean it doesn't insult my love for America.

I can't think of an analogy that would help convey how I feel and how your argument makes me feel.... okay, say you're teaching a class, and two students are passing a note, and in that note are really hurtful and personally painful things written about you. Now, the message wasn't intended for you, but it's about you... you're saying that even though you are offended by the message, you'll just let it go because you aren't the intended recipient of the message?

Actually, that ad says just that. No matter where it ends up on that measuring stick, it's 8 inches. I appeals to everyone. If they really want to get the world's attention, run the same ad only have USA labeled on top of every country. That'd get some attention from foreign media.
