McCain Wants to Suspend the Federal Gas Tax (http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2008/04/14/daily16.html)
...McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, unveiled his economic plans Tuesday in Pennsylvania.
They include a Memorial Day to Labor Day suspension of the 18.4 cents-per-gallon federal gasoline tax and 24.4 cents-per-gallon levy on diesel fuel. The move comes as gasoline prices stand at $3.39 per gallon nationally, according to AAA....

Sounds nice - but since he's got squat for power - then he's just blowing more hot air.

Why? The US is solvent, rolling in money, we don't need no flipping taxes. We can just print more money or borrow it from China - so let him give us a break on gas taxes. Or, better yet, let's just yank the tax breaks back from the oil companies to offset the tax cut given for this little "holiday" then everyone wins. :smt118
At least he's offering something you can put your finger on instead of just saying America needs a ' change '. Of course we need a change, but how about telling us how you are going to help the consumers with gas prices.

Another "tax break", no matter how small, isn't going to do anything for us but put us more in debt. He's blowing smoke and unless he can give us something besides some "token" to appease us for a short time - then he's offering nothing - not even change.

Except a gas tax holiday isn't going to help the consumer with gas prices. If gas gets cheaper, people are going to keep driving, and since the oil companies are telling us that part of the problem is our demand, because gas got cheaper, people will see no need to conserve.
Then on top of that, with a "holiday" those federal funds won't be going into infrastructure maintenance. (Bridge collapse in Minnesota anyone?)

Both Obama and Clinton have Web sites where they outline every single aspect of their current plans as president.
Yeah yeah, I know. But I'd bet both of you would be in the gas line with me. Would you not?

18 cents off of 3.50 is sorta nice... but ultimately speaking...it does nothing
saving me almost 3 bucks on a nearly 60 dollar fillup in a single cab standard shift 4 banger truck only pisses me off

I'll take it if they offer a tax free holiday period. But, how about they just do away with the tax....PERIOD!!! Combine the fed tax with the state tax and you're paying an extra $.37 per gallon. We basically pay a 12% tax on gas right now. That's more than sales tax.

My driving habits have changed quite a bit since gas hit $3.00/gallon. So while I would get gas when I need it (just like I do now), I wouldn't be going back to my previous habits.

I'm in whatever line has the cheapest prices regardless of the little "gas-tax holiday" proposed by the Mr. McCain. He's made comments that his weakness is in economics - he's just proving it.
All three of these candidates say things that they think their people want to hear.

Last I checked - they are politicans aren't they? Of course they are going to do that. But I know I don't want anyone who even begins to resemble the current Prez sitting behind the desk.
How do you know if a politician is lying - he/she opens their mouth. Case closed.
But when they open them and such stupidity spews out, I'd say "run for the hills". Cause some are just worse than others.

i dont know...
i dont agree with everything obama has said but i get the sense that he has been more straight forward about what he plans on doing than the rest... it might not be what i want but at least its straight talk
i also enjoy the fact that he isnt beholden to corporate interests

I primarily go to gas stations to buy beer so the price of hops is of far greater concern to me than the trivial amount of petroleum it takes to get to the liquor store.

I see this as a smart move. He's playing to the hearts of the mob. But again, all of them just want to spend loads of money, that if we're lucky, Congress won't approve. It will help them get into office though. Promise the most money to the most people, and your in.

This is one of those 'feel good' things, that in reality, doesn't do jack squat.
Oooo, he's taking off $.30 of $3.50 gasoline... It's still $1 more than it was last year.
In the article I read, McCain pretty much said that none of his ideas would happen, as Congress wouldn't be receptive the ideas.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with fuzzis, Amanda and Reason. The world is coming to an end! I'm tellin' ya. All politicians are slimy. They will propose almost anything to get a vote, knowing dayum well, Congress has to vote on it. I'll tell you, our focus should be on Congress in the coming election. Bush hasn't vetoed anything Congress sent to him.
Correct my thinking here if I'm wrong. Little Economics 101: Gas prices drop 18 cents. Diesel goes up 24 cents. Over the road trucks use diesel to haul goods. Manufacturers and producers ship by truck and have to pay more. They up prices to the retailer. Retailer ups prices to the consumer and we're paying 24 cents more for produce but saving 18 cents on gas? Sound about right?

It's probably cost the taxpayer more in congressional wages and paper for them to pass such a bill than the dayum tax cut will produce.

On another note, I noticed driving into work today that the Murphy station I bought gas at yesterday (thank Heavens) had gone up $.10. It was 3.19 yesterday, 3.29 today. I understand that oil per barrell has hit the 114.00 mark, but there is no way in he!! that someone can tell me that the 114.00 barrel oil has already made it to those refineries to make it necessary to jump the price up this quick. We're being taken for a ride, a very expensive ride. I generally like a kiss to go with my *****.

As far as the tax thingy goes, didn't Boosh Sr. say 'read my lips, no new taxes'? Those who run on a platform of reducing taxes need to try and hide their voting records/promises.
This is nothing new. The DEMOCRATS had the very same plan ready to present in 2006 right before the congressional races. While it is not a good long range plan, in theory it would problaby help the economy during the sUmmer months (IF THE PRICE OF OIL/GAS DID NOT GO UP). The sad truth is that what ever the Gov reduces the gas taxes, oil producers will take up the slack and go up. The gas tax was .04 cent per gal. in the early 1980's. The tax should be tied to the price of gas, so that the tax goes up when gas goes up. This would help stablize the price of gas.

Back when Greyhound Bus ran a special: Go anywhere in the U.S for $29, a service tech where my son works took his wife and two kids to Las Vegas from here in Greenville for his week's vacation. Took him three days to get there, gamble one day and three days back. Can you imagine 6 days on a bus with two kids? What a total dumbass.:smt118
Now Billary is saying that if she's elected president, she will immediately suspend all gas tax for consumers.

It's all so incredibly stupid. According to Congressional analysis, it's going to save folks $30. $30 if it's suspended for the summer. Thirty bucks isn't even a tank of freakin' gas.
They just had Obama blasting her saying that she's only saying that to get elected.. God, we're screwed.
