Monday morning I was getting ready to leave for work. My maltie poo chased a bird and ran down the hill in front of my house. I went back inside for maybe 3 minutes and I heard the most awful unusual barking inside my garage. I opened the door and he was sitting there wet, dirty and had the most frightful look in his big brown eyes. I noticed blood on his front neck in front of his trachea. I called work and went to the vet as soon as they opened at 7:30. He was almost in shock by this time.
Vet said he was attacked by a dog; however, there are no dogs nearby and he was only 50 feet from my house. I think it was a bobcat or a coyote. It really scares me to think how bad it could have been.
He has 2 deep puntures in the front and 2 on the back of his neck and a long, deep slice behind his front shoulder. He gets to come home from the hospital tomorrow. I hope that this will make him more afraid of things and not be "10 feet tall and bullet proof"!!!!

Glad the pup's ok. I have three small dogs and sometimes they let their bark overwhelm their bite too. :smt023

Aw, poor puppy.
It was more than likely a coyote. Even though we might not see them, coyotes are becoming a problem since we're building neighborhoods in their home ranges. Btw, whether it was a coyote or a bobcat, you are extremely lucky your dog came out of it alive.

I have seen dogs tore up by cats and a coon can do some damage.

BTW, I live 45 miles from Hattiesburg in Jasper county and we have a creek behind our house. We have deer and turkey come into our front yard. I have seen and killed a coyote in the field and hear them all the time. What freaks me out is that it took place in 3 minutes so close to my house..Poor baby..His pic is in my profile. I can't wait to get him home tomorrow!

Our neighbor had his Jack Russell killed by coyotes while he walked behind his 4 wheeler. They just ran out of the woods, grabbed him, and hauled ass. Not more than 5-10 ft. from the 4 wheeler.

Thank goodness you were able to get to him before he bled to death!!

Coyotes have been spreading for a while and they have really become a problem. Wild hogs are getting bad, too. I know it is very encouraged to go predator hunting. But it will take a lot of successful hunting to get the coyote population under control. I've never thought about going coyote hunting but it may be fun and could possibly contribute to keeping their population in check. Coyotes can become very dangerous if their population gets too high and they have problems finding food.

When I was a kid, my grandpa used to get me up early (very early) on Saturday and Sunday mornings, put me in the bed in the van, grab, the dog, and head off into the country with the CB on, to chase the coyote hunters.

Is there a way to bait them? I am in a pretty open spot with several hundred acres for them to roam. I would love to blast one with my husband's 300 mag. I just can't afford for any innocent animals to get poisoned or I would try that. We have seen some and heard them, but we never have the rifle nearby, til now.

There is some game calls for coyote that they are fooled by and will come running. There is also tapes you can buy that go into a truck radio and you need like a p.a. speaker on vehicle, sounds like a hurt rabbitt.

You can try an electronic call such as a wounded rabbit or something like that. But coyotes have incredible senses and even more than deer.....so hunting them isn't quite like shooting fish in a barrel.

We just fill hubcaps with antifreeze and hot dog weiners.
We've also thrown out meat with anectine on it.
You'd be amazed at the number of coyotes we've found dead.
But, they just keep breeding...............
I am so sorry to hear this. I am glad your little dog made it out of this alive. This really scares me and I hate to hear this. God bless your little baby. I looked at the profile and he is a cutie.

birthday bunnie, I am sooo sorry about your baby. THANK GOD you found him when you did. Please keep us informed on how he is doing. I learned a long time ago...NEVER to let out our doggie babies unless we are out with them. NEVER. Small dogs can also be attacked by large hawks...we see them all the time flying over our house and we live across from FGH. Small dogs often look like rabbits or other small prey to the hawks, especially those that are white or light brown. Prayers going up for him to get well soon.

So glad that your furbaby is going to be OK. That is really scary about the coyotes. Some of them carry rabies!:smt118

Thanks to all!! He definately had an angel running with him in that short time that he got attacked. My Golden Retriever has been in a funk since her little buddy has been gone. I will pick him up this afternoon after work. Dr. Randy Moore at Sawmill animal hospital has been GREAT!! Very nice man and very helpful. He has called me everyday to give an update.
Bunnie, what a precious dog! Glad to hear he's going to be okay.

With a large slice like you are descibing I would say hog. Very likely it was a coyote though. Start keepin' that 300 mag slung over your shoulder....and a shotgun loaded to the max with some buck shot. You may want to call the local warden and see if a biologist will come out and do a survey of some sorts to see if there is a bad need for some pack thinnin'.

I thought of a hawk too, when I saw the description of the wounds. BB, so glad he's going to be ok!!

We are home FINALLY! He has two punture wounds on the top and bottom of his neck. It really looks as if something had his little head in it's mouth and the wounds are from the canine inscisors. The wound behind his leg, I'm thinking, is where the creature held him with his paw.
He is doing great and we are lucky. He weighs 17 lbs and I don't know what it was that got him, but all I can say is when I see it...Gonna blast it!
Thanks to all for the advice.:bhug::bhug:

dadgum it woman. Don't need a 300 mag to kill them ( or blow them to pieces over a 50ft area ). Go get a .17hmr. Has less recoil and wont leave the shoulder sore, isn't as loud. It was designed for varmits and coyote, or so I am told. 1/2 to 1" drop at 300 yards. And those bullets come apart on impact.
Wal Mart has one for like $250. There are several nice ones at gander mountain I been looking at.

LOL......I just wanted to use maximum force to express how pissed off I was. We have one of those and some .243's and other calibers. I can kill it with my 7mm-08 without a doubt...I am on a mission! :smt067
