On Wdam last night they mentioned a couple incidents of violence over the weekend. It's so sad to watch young lives be destroyed probably over some silly meaningless junk.

So they build those housing projects so people can move into them and shoot at one another? They need to put up some bullet-proof barricades around them to keep the gunfire within the area. Hell, this place is within gunshot range of the high school.

Off W. 4th St., somewhere between 19th Ave and Hutchison. It's not showing up on google maps, for some reason, but it's pretty close to HHS.

I used to live within a couple of blocks of that place. Also, it was at that corner incident 4th & Hutchinson where I saw a guy walking up behind my truck with a gun. Maybe they had the right idea about building a wall around the school.

It's just north of the old railroad tracks on North Street between West 7th and West 4th Streets. Moore's Lock and Key is on the South side of the track. It's named for the "Old Vicker's Warehouse" that burned down several years ago. It was a huge wooden warehouse where they shipped out tomatoes by railroad. Later they went in and made a subdivision on the property.

Is that in the area where Speed's Electric Motor Repair was years ago?

You know, I pass that place everyday on my way home and it really pisses me off. And I blame the government for a lot of the crap that goes on in places like that. The majority of the people that live in these places are low lifes that will never contribute positvely to society. Heck, I passed by Robertson's Place Apartements (the projects) the other day on my way to a relative's house, and I saw these teenage girls walking. One of the girls proceeded throw her trash right on the ground when the trash can was lees than a feet away from her. That really pissed me off.
It also pisses me off that the leaders of the local African-American community will not speak out against all of this black-on-black crime. Better yet, the mayor should feel obligated to address this problem as well.

We could solve this easily. If you commit a violent crime, you should lose your rights to live in or even be on the premises of public housing for 5-7 years.

IF I am not badly mistaken that is one of the rules....IF you are a felon you can't live there...I know when I was at the p.d. several tenants came from time to time to see "what" they could do because they had been given an eviction notice because a "boyfriend/girlfriend" came to visit/stay and "they" were a convicted felon. People didn't like that...not much they could do however...IF they had read their leases they would have seen where that was covered.
With all that said however, unless the complex manager stays on top of things and enforces the rules nothing will change. At the time, I know several of the complexes that had managers who were sticklers for no thugs hanging around...they would call us in a heartbeat....HPD arrested alot of "wanted" folks because of these calls.

If you commit a violent crime, you should lose your rights to live in or even be on the premises of public housing for 5-7 years.I don't understand the federal govt. sometimes. They make these rules or laws for states but don't do the same for individuals. Like if you don't pass a seal belt law you'll lose all your federal highway money. But they don't tell people who live in govt. assisted housing that if they don't keep the place clean they'll lose their kitchen facilities. Or whatever.
I don't necessarily mind the idea of govt. assisted housing, but everybody and their brother knows if a housing project goes up it's going to be a crime infested sh*t hole in a short period of time. They should be prevented from being built in certain places, like near a school, for instance. Until the govt. can force the people living in them to act like responsible citizens then money needs to be held back from them because that's the only thing that will make any difference.

I am not in favor of welfare from the Federal Government at all. To much bureaucracy. If we have to have it, how about drug testing everyone who gets a check. No alcohol or drugs of any kind if you are getting a check. Use your time being supported by our taxes to get a life and be responsible. No beer cans or liquor bottles in the trash or drinking in the projects AT ALL.

Never happen, because [whiny liberal voice]"that's not FAAAAAIIIIIIRRRRR"[/whiny liberal voice]
Do away with "welfare" altogether. Require them to work, and if they don't want to work, let them starve.
I'm through giving a sh*t about the "poor, pitiful" welfare scum.

Both the Bible and John Smith said, "You don't work....you don't eat." If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
Welfare programs CAN be used responsibly. They just rarely are. Most people can think of someone they know who did it, though. I think I've talked about my sister here before. She and her boyfriend got pregnant at age 17. They got hitched and, after a few months of living in my parents' basement, moved into an apartment where their rent was based on their income, used WIC, and got food stamps for a couple of years. But with a crap ton of hard work and sacrifice, they scratched their way out of the hole they dug and now they're independent (not counting the occasional Daddy-loan). So yes, welfare can serve a good purpose when people use it the way it's supposed to be used.
I think there should be a definite time limit on how long you can be on it.
I guess this has gotten off topic. Sorry.

No, it was for the cell phone.
From the article:
Hubbard said people envied her son's car - a white Buick Roadmaster - that he purchased with money he'd saved while working at McDonald's. The jealousy, Moore said, is what led to an altercation between her son and two other men. And resentment, she said, eventually led to her son's murder.

I think the mother would have a better idea of the motives than the aunt.
The death came after the cell phone, but was motivated by the car, according to the article.

The article is very clear that the motive is the resentment of the car, and the murder occurred after the cell phone allegation.

The car was a source of resentment and motive. The cell phone was a catalyst.

It is between W. 4th & Quinn St. In December of '06 there was a murder on Dixie Avenue that my son & a neighbor witnessed. It really hurt me to have to sell the house that I grew up in, but the neighborhood is the ghetto & the barrio now.:smt086

Wow. Those gangstas have such full, rich and rewarding lives. Now I know why everyone wants to emulate that exceedingly worthy thug culture.

I grew up on West Street and although I can understand where you're coming from Palmino I'm happy my mom was able to get the hell out of that place. The city bought our home...it was one that was sitting along Gordon's Creek bank. As kids, we saw and heard alot of things we shouldn't have had to. That place along with other slum areas should be totally demolished.
I haven't been over that way in a while but when I do see that area it makes me sick to my stomach. There are some people in this world that will do whatever it takes to destroy something good.

If you've got somebody willing to kill over a cellphone (or any material thing from that matter) is there any redeeming quality in them to begin with?

This story is just completely crazy. I owned a business for a the last 9 or 10 months, just sold it last month, but we had a guy that worked for us that lived downtown. He is a nice guy and would talk about his best friend all the time, I actually met his friend a couple of weeks ago. His friend came over and did some work in my backyard so my dog would stop getting out. I talk to my former employee saturday and he told me that his friend is the one that is in jail for murder. Im not taking up for the guy, I m just not used to this kind of stuff. The guy could nt have been any nicer, and it was over a cell phone and the kid making some threats. Human life wasnt thought about at all over the situation. Hell, I would have bought the guy a new cell phone to keep him out of jail. Just thought Id share.

Well Ks, there are ALOT of people in this world that know when to put on a front to make themselves look like a decent person. Infact, it's even taught to alot of kids by their parents. "You act this way to get all you can out of someone..."
Most of the kids these days are immune to violence. Alot are taught to have no concience. It's sad. I feel bad for the children who are taught to be decent people. They are going to have a tough time in life dealing with the others who put no value on human lives. Our world is in a mess and it's only going to get worse.

It really chaps me when I run an errand from work or go out for lunch and see apparently able-bodied men 25-40 years old sitting around on their porches (why do they always sit on the porch?) or sitting in a group in their yards. Here I am working like crazy to make a living, and there they are doing nothing, and appear to be having a great time doing nothing. And, regardless of the time of day, they all seem to have a "mystery can" in a brown paper bag.
If I do nothing for 10 minutes, I feel guilty.
