Okay, as I've mentioned I just moved to the 'burg and my dryer is having an electrical malfunction. It's in great shape and only a couple of years old, however it's a month past warranty (go figure).
Anyone know someone reliable and good who makes house calls? It's a Maytag Performa electric dryer. Thanks.

What's it doing? There's nothing in a dryer except a fan and a heating element.
i went to the maytag website and scheduled an appointment on there. Guy from A and E factory service came by. It was not a pleasant experience for me, but the guy that came did what he was supposed to and was nice. Can't blame anything on him.

I'm telling you to go buy a new one. The labor alone is prolly gonna' cost 100 bucks easy.

Why was it not pleasant?? If the guy did what he was supposed to. Just curious.

I paid over $600 for this dryer so not gonna just go buy a new one. It looks practically BRAND NEW now. No scratches, excellent condition...except for the not working part.

Okay, while we're on the subject - what about dishwasher repair?
Try Petes Quality Maintenance 543-3184 We use him for all of our electrical problems, in rental units too.

It could be something very simple - like a wad of lint in the door switch or one side of the double circuit breaker in the breaker box is bad.
Like Hermi said - a dryer is a fairly simple appliance.

I fixed my dryer many times. There are different sensors in a dryer and sometimes just as simple as one of those. If you have an electrical tester, sometimes you can find the problem yourself and run to Appliance Parts on Lundy Lane and pick up the parts yourself. Or you can call someone to come fix it, but I don't have a clue who.

it was the compressor on my fridge that went out. ended up being on backorder and all that.....
it was almost three weeks between time in went out until time it was fixed. took guy 10 minutes to locate problem, less than hour to fix.
Yeah, Rem.
A dishwasher is pretty simple too.
Still a PITA though. ;) heh heh heh
Water Pump, heating element, a couple of thermal switches and a timer/Cycle control switch and a solenoid valve on the water supply. And a door switch.
Anybody know anything about Andy Moore in Petal?
I've never used him and don't know the guy but I've heard he does good work.

Okay...Ted and Remington seem like they know their way around an appliance. Since my warranty has expired I cracked it open and found my problem. The top hot wire to the plug unit was burned in half. Had a green tint to it. Adding some pics so you can see. NOW...here's my question. CAN I just get some new wire (what guage?) and splice it together, put a new connector on it and rock and roll?? What potentially caused it to do that to begin with?
Thanks,

is that the terminals for the cord that goes from the wall to the unit?

Yes. It's where the cord attaches to the unit itself. The wire that is burned actually runs from THAT to the dryer controls, not the cord. In other words, everything to the RIGHT of those screws is the CORD (plug-in) and its wiring. Everything to the LEFT runs to the controls. My problem is the top HOT wire on the LEFT side. If it were on the right, i'd just go buy another cord.

Or maybe your apartment has some electrical issues.

With that info - the safest approach would be to have a qualified, licensed, bonded technician have a look at it.
From this end, there's really no way to determine what caused that wire to burn off and I wouldn't want us to be the cause of burning the place down or something. We like's ya too much to risk that.;)
As they had said before Dryers are easy to fix. My dad works on appliances and many times has told me over the phone how to fix my friends stuff.
Sears is pretty good about fixing stuff but always no matter what keep your maintenance agreement up to date. Well worth the money.

I don't work on appliance, but I do work with electrical{industrial} daily. It looks like a fairly simple repair of replacing ternimal on the wire, make sure you replace with high temp ternimal that can be purchased at electrical supply or appliance supply. looks like #10 you will need to take burn't wire and ternimal to match it{most burns are due to loose connection]. Oh yeah make sure power is off or dryer is unplugged

I gotta' buy another cord for my dryer. I left my last one at my old house for the newbies because they left theirs and didn't have one. I tell you what...I have alot of work to do here at the new house....and my new sprayer mounted to my 4 wheeler just went out......again. Fish ain't happy. Not at all.
I did manage to flip the breaker to the outside unit though to cool the house...I was worried there for a little while......nothing but the dryer is marked in that panel...and the hot water heater.

We have used Andy Moore twice. Once to fix a dishwasher & once to fix my oven. He is good.:smt023

We have had our washer & dryer since 1997. My Hubby has fixed our dryer twice & our washer once. He is our "Mr. Fix It" around here as he is a jack of all trades and can make or fix just about anything. If it is something that he can't fix, then we call somebody in the biz.:-D

Thanks,
HubDawg, BEFORE you burn your house/apartment down, please call Andy Moore Appliance repair. He is very busy so it may take him a day or two to get to you. He is honest and not overly expensive. I had a Maytag washer that was only three years old...he came and repaired it once just after the warranty was out...when it went on the fritz again, he told me I could just go buy a new one cheaper than repair job....he told me the part and I called to get a price...with his labor, it was just not worth it... and his labor is NOT that expensive. I was SO disappointed in Maytag at that point. I bought another brand...Maytag was bought out by someone else and reliability has gone out the window from what I hear.

I've bought some stuff from Andy Moore. I bought a washin' machine from him......After 6 years it's still kickin'...might be 4 or 5 years, but I know for a fact that me and my Jr.'s have put at least 10 years of dirt through it without a hitch.
I like Andy Moore, for the simple fact I've never had to call him to work on something I've bought from the business.

Did you check classified ads? You can get a W & D for relatively cheap there. Check Craigslist also!
This book for me has become invaluable and order parts off the Internet.

Just wanted to say, that I finally got Andy Moore out to fix the dryer. Yes, it takes awhile to get to him, or him to you but he's definitely worth it. He's very meticulous about his work and takes alot of pride in what he does. He explained everything he was doing and why. If you need something fixed, call him.
By the way....I told him that I heard about him here on MyHattiesburg and he seemed very curious. So Andy, welcome to the board if you read this. Thanks for fixing me up!

Quite nicely, thank you. Haven't had a chance to experience a lot of what Hattiesburg has to offer yet, but I like it so far. Couple of restaurants that I've been to were very good. I'm guessing it's a little different atmosphere during football weekends, huh?
Something just came to mind - Check this out (http://www.hattiesburgdowntown.com/Hattiesburg%20Downtown%20News.htm)
Ya might wanna 'bookmark' it and keep it somewhere handy. ;)

Go buy a new cord and replace the old one. Be sure to get the terminal nuts good and tight so the won't loose any of the current and burn out again.

Hubdawg, glad you decided to get Mr. Moore out to check your problem out. I KNEW he was good and very reasonable with his prices. He stays swamped with work so that should tell you right there he is in high demand. I have always found him to be very honest and the work was done in a flash once he got to me. I always wait for him, I have faith in his not only his honesty but his repair abilities.
