I am not smart when it comes to cars, but I try. Anyway, I am trying to replace the alternator. All the books and websites I have looked at show it as easily accessible, but in my car there is some sort of other device in front of the alternator that I can't figure out how to remove or get around. Anybody have any ideas?

67 Mustang? Is that the 200 straight six engine? I had a 64 Falcon with that engine in it, but the alternator was easily accessible. I'm with Fusil, post a picture, and let some of the gear heads on here take a look. Also, cut up some strips from a coke can, 'cause you're gonna have to shim the Alt. in or out so it doesn't bind on the fly wheel. Your new Alt. should come with a gage for positioning it. do not leave out this step or your new Alt will wear out in just a few hundred miles.

starters need shimming sometimes not alternators

My bad, I was thinking starter. Temporary brain fart.
The Alternator though should be an easy replacement though. If it's the 200 straight six engine the whole motor is simplicity itself. If I remember correctly most of the bolts are 5/8" so you usually only need one socket.

Again, I don't pretend to know what I am doing, so all I can say is "the thing with the red arrow pointed at it." The second pic is a little closer if you can't tell what it is. It is a 289 V8 if that makes any difference. None of the books or websites have had that thing in the picture. I can't figure out how to get around it.

That looks like your a/c compressor. You should be able to work around it as the alternator is below it and should have it's own bracket. At worst you may need to loosen the compressor's bracket and swing it out of the way.

Y'all are making me get all teary-eyed for my old yellow Mustang. The one where you had to lift the engine to get at the starter. The one with the timing chain. The one with black vinyl interior and no a/c.
'scuse me a minute, going out to the driveway to give my Accord a big ole kiss.
(of course the Mustang was a lot cuter.)

I can't work around it, that's for sure. But, I might be able to loosen the bracket like you say. Hope it isn't rusted over like everything else in the engine bay. I had to use extreme measures to get the corroded battery tray out.

Spray all your bolts with WD-40 or PB Blaster and let it set before trying to work on it. That will make it so much easier. Does the A/C even work?

i don't know. it won't turn over because of the alternator.

Well, chances are the compressor is frozen up as well. Just in case, don't disconnect the lines on the back of it since it could still have a charge. You can take the belt off of it though. Depending on how much slack there is, you could completely remove it from the mounting brackets and set it to the side allowing you more room to work.

Good luck with that project- having never owned a Ford before Janaury this year, we have found all kinds of fun stuff under the hood of my '65. It was a challenge to learn a different engine from all the Camaros we own, but it was well worth it. It was my 50th birthday present, fully restored and painted in our GARAGE over a 3 month period. I was grounded to the house, didn't have a clue what kind of car it was-
but the surprise was worth it.
I was going to try to post a photo but find myself clueless here- LOL. Maybe later-
BTW- we have a classic 98 TA, 6 speed, all original for sale. Great gas mileage but not enough room in the driveway.

Those straight sixes are great little engines. I had one break a push rod in N.O. and was able to remove the spark plug from the affected cylinder & drive it back to Hattiesburg on 5 cylinders.
When you get the alt. out bring it over to the Alternator shop on the corner of Royal st. & Broadway drive and they can re wrap it for you. They do great work and they're inexpensive. I get all my electrical work done there.

Well how are you going to get the car started to use the alternator to charge the battery? You can use a fully charged battery and start the car. It looks like it was a flood victim.

There is no point in replacing the battery until the alternator is fixed.

Have you obtained a new alt.? or are you gonna have that one rewrapped? Either way I wouldn't think it was more than a three beer job.

You shouldn't worry, switching out an alt. is no big deal. Just go ahead & soak your nuts in WD40 now (the ones on the car) that way you'll be a step ahead of the game.

Go to the Alternator shop on the corner of Royal St & Broadway drive. They can give you a good deal on a rebuilt alt. and they'll even give you tips on how to change it, and you can take the car there afterward and have them check to make sure you did it right. Don't think that by going to Auto zone or somewhere that you're getting a "new" alt. theirs are rebuilt too, but that's not a bad thing all they change is the wire & brushes and the old parts are probably of higher quality than new manufacture anyway.

I considered buying one from http://www.mustangsunlimited.com (http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/). I have purchased the other stuff I replaced from them. But if I can get a local guy to look at my work, I'm probably better off buying from them.

One advantage to buying locally is that they will give you a refund for turning in your old alt., I don't know if they'll do that on line

Oh yeah- cool! Now if I can find a photo of the car without my possum-eatin' grin all over it. Hey- y'all can arm wrestle for the Trans Am- but the 12 year old swears it's really KITT and doesn't want us to sell it.

It is a CA car. My family is originally from LA. You are awesome and the first person who has identified it. I knew something was different but never knew what. No wonder it wasn't in any of the books.
