From Robert St. John's column Sunday.

Two years ago I found a small Mexican restaurant located in the back of a Mexican convenience store. It is great. The menu is written in Spanish, all of the employees and customers speak Spanish, and the owners don’t seem the least bit concerned about serving any non-Spanish speaking Americans. I love that. It’s the real deal.

My secret Mexican restaurant makes guacamole tableside using a mortar and pestle, just as it should be done. There are several exotic meats offered in their tacos. And there’s no sign of the typical Americanized Mexican menu staples anywhere.

I assume it's in Hattiesburg. Any idea where it's located?

Might be the one on the 42 bypass...next to accu-mix.

Sounds like La Mexicana to me. If it is their menudo (I think it's only served on sunday) is excellent.

It may be the one on Main Street heading downtown by Big Star. I know they serve food.

Isn't that the one next to the ghetto Big Star? We got some tamales and burritos there a while back. I think I prefer "Americanized" Mexican food.

And the owners of the one next to Big Star seem very nice and CLEAN to me! That always helps...

I think the one he is talking about is in Chicago.

No I think it's Hattiesburg...

Edit: If you read the whole article, you can see that he says it's in his hometown.

La Cruzana #2 on Hardy street heading downtown is like that. You need to speak Spanish if you're going to go. I've never had guacamole there, but at lunch the tortas are really good.

Authentic Mexican is so different than the Tex-Mex we associate with Mexican cooking.

Its in Chicago .....

I only travel to Chicago once a year, but my secret local Mexican joint in the back of the convenience store will be just fine until I return. Find it if you can. For this week's recipe, Grilled Shrimp Tacos with Fresh Fruit Pico di Gallo and Jalapeño and Roasted Garlic Crème Fraiche, go to the column link on www.robert stjohn.com.

I am 99.95% sure it is the one on the By-pass.

That place is good.

I will ask my friendly massage therapist to ask him while his is being rubbed down.

Unlike everybody else in this thread, I will just be honest and say.....I really don't know...I think Robert St. John has a restaurant or two in h'burg...somebody stop by and ask him....

That's overly simplistic Stratton. If someone did that...then there would be NO reason...NO REASON to argue over the location.

So, lets review....
Going to the source for clarification = BAD.
Bickering and fighting about it = GOOD.

Now, don't you have some basketball or field hockey to coach?
