:smt118How come I don't remember this? (http://www.wdam.com/global/story.asp?s=8540807) I guess this is why they need a tuition hike?

Forrest County jury has awarded three former University of Southern Mississippi soccer coaches $1.2 million in their lawsuit against the university.

It also explains why noone is getting a raise. I was considering a job there, but the pay is already bad and seeing how it isn't going to get better anytime soon, I'm not so sure I want it.

Of course, if it's the only job I can find then I might just have to suck it up.....

Actually, I think they have insurance for these claims.

They do.

Given the anti-tort climate of the state Supreme Court, I would be quite surprised if this verdict is upheld on appeal.

Nah. Insurance doesn't cover these types of situations. I can't reveal my source, but I have it on EXCELLENT authority that this was not handled by an insurance company.

There's a list of lawsuits against USM as long as your arm. I'm pretty sure at least some of them are covered by insurance. However, was this award against the school or against the named parties as individuals? That's a whole other issue, isn't it?

The news story indicated the suit was brought against and the award made against the individuals - Giannini, Varnell, and someone else who I cannot recall. In the positions those folks are in, you can be that they all carry significant insurance to cover such. They would be loonie not to!

I know one of the only reasons I joined the union when I taught was so I would have professional liability insurance. If something had happened, I would be responsible for the first $10,000 and then the insurance kicked in up to $1,000,000.

I remain part of a couple of professional organizations mostly for the liability insurance they offer, just as you said, fuzzis. Especially in Mississippi, anyone can sue anyone for anything at anytime and you have to defend yourself - whether it is settled against you or not. The insurance that I have and have had in the past covers the cost of necessary attorney's fees in litigation, as well as any award up to a limit.
