Purpose of this Thread is to post pics of Southern Mississippi snakes, and properly name the snake.
If you find a snake and have a camera, please take a picture and post it.
I am always trying to describe a snake and no one has ever seen one like it. However, if we have pics of snakes, then someone can enlighten us what kind of snake it is.
While running on the Rails to Trails this weekend, I passed over a little snake. He had Red diamonds on his back with White borders. Rest of snake looked tan-ish colored. Anyone know it's type?
It sounds like a juvenile rat snake. Without a pic, it's hard to say.

After searching this website, I think it was either a
Louisiana Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum amaura) "or"
Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum)

I killed a huge rattlesnake about a month ago, and another big snake I think was a cottonmouth. The wife has those pics and I'm sure she will post em if I can't find em.

It wasn't a coral. It was too big for that. I believe it was about 2 ft.
About 2'' diameter.
Looked sorta like snake below, which is a Red Milk Snake.

I have been in the woods a lot, but I have to admit, I have never seen a coral snake in real life. I have asked my father, and my grandfather if they have ever seen one, and neither have. My grandfather was a logger, so he just about lived in the woods part of his life.
Has anyone else seen a coral snake around H'burg?

Somewhere I had the idea that MS was not a place you'd find Coral Snakes. And you don't want to find one either. Camp Shelby must hold the record for the most and largest rattlesnakes in the world.

I have seen a scorpion. This was when I was a child playing in some red clay bluffs in Sumrall.

Believe it!! I have seen some really big Rattlers at Camp Shelby. They were like monster snakes. Big as the road was wide. Like I said, MONSTER Snakes at Shelby.

He had Red diamonds on his back with White borders. Rest of snake looked tan-ish colored. Anyone know it's type? The way you describe that the white borders the red, it sounds more like a coral snake than a milk snake. If it is black bordering the red, it could be a milk snake or a scarlet snake. I think I saw a coral snake once. Guy was digging with a track hoe and he scraped the ground and I saw the snake and was trying to get a good look at it, and he scooped again and it was gone into the back of the truck. I wished I could have caught his attention and told him to hold up so I could see the snake.
I think you would only see coral snakes at night but they are not aggressive at all. And they cannot bite you in the leg if you walked by them. I think you would have to handle one and have him gnaw on you before you could get any poison. But if you did, you wouldn't live very long.

I saw a coral snake on a bluff on the Bouie river several years ago. I eased the boat up close to get a look at it, and it was definitely a coral snake; red and yellow bands were adjacent. (I would have said "juxtaposed", but I know Bluesman reads these threads sometimes) :smt118

You know who's fault this is right? It's St Patricks. If he had only drove the snakes out of our lands and not just in Ireland we wouldn't have this problem.

It did NOT have rings, but like diamonds on his back. But the center of the Diamond was a red color, with white borders.
It did not have rings like a coral snake.

Please don't kill snakes. they are far more beneficial than most people realize. even poisonous snakes. Just leave them alone. If you kill off all the snakes around you expect to have real problems with truly dangerous animals: Rats & mice. Exponentially more people die or are injured by diseases carried by rats & mice than ar harmed by snakes.

well the snakes can live as long as they are not crossing my path or property. But we have only seen snakes while I was pregnant.

I don't kill snakes, I run the other way. I wish I had a picture of the black runner that had me cornered on top of my car under the carport...but no way was I getting down to get the camera when he was shaking his tail at me like a rattlesnake.

I saw one it was less than a foot long but that was 30 years ago. I remember when I was a kid I would see a lot of different snakes that I dont see anymore. Maybe there is not as many as before. It could be I am not in the woods as much. Oh well not really complaining
