View Full Version : ChiChi and the Amish

So yesterday morning (at 4 in the freakin' AM) I set out for Amish country to pick up my son, spend time with friends and family...and maybe face down a demon or two.

It seems very strange to be up here after nearly a year in the south. I can see that I have changed in some ways. It is surprising how many things I just took for granted as part of life that are different up here.

It is cold! At least it feels cold.
The air is dry. There is no "curtain of humidity" to greet you when you get out of the car. I noticed this morning that my throat is a bit scratchy--think it is because of the change.
There are lightning bugs up here! --I hadn't noticed that we don't seem to get lightning bugs in the burg--do we??? (of course we have lovebugs--some how its just not the same:kekeke:).
TIGER LILLIES!!!--that is one of my favorite flowers and they are in bloom up here right now--I don't think we have them in MS.
Of course--the ever present "clip-clop" of horses pulling Amish buggies is something to get used to again--along with the comings and goings of the Amish in the "hood" who come to use Gran's phone that is in her garage for them.
One word: CORN!
There are other things too...but I'm tired and want to see what ya'll are up to. We have dial up here--but I hope to check in some.

I am reminding that ya'll have made a place for me down there and while I am grateful for where I have come--I am also DEEPLY grateful for my new home. Thinking of ya'll!

Don't let those wild and crazy Amish be a bad influence on you while you're up there....

Here's where I want to go to visit the Amish-

http://www.800padutch.com/intercourse.shtml

Having been born and raised in Reading, PA, I have been there (Intercourse), done that - along with Blue Ball. Kettle Kitchen Village is awesome when it comes to dips, jellies, salsa, candies, shoofly pies, relishes, pepper cabbage and some of the hottest/horseradish & mustard you ever want. And guess what? It is all made naturally and for some of it right there on premise while you watch! The Bird in Hand farmers market is awesome. Folks come by the bus loads, for fresh meats, home made sausages, cheeses, in season veggies and fruits, and crafts. Mrs DY likes visiting her mother-in-law - as long as I take her to Lancaster County!

ChiChi, you left something out, the horses really go clip, clop.........splatt:bowrofl::bowrofl:!!!

The tickle is definitely the fresh air (very fresh horsey air)! :smt105

All in what you want.

I get a very good cajun sausage at a market in Picayune (same building as Paul"s). This makes the best Poboys!

I drive by it every day!

Ive taken several today (but will not be able to load em till I get home...).

More funny differences...

Grits are nowhere on the menu up here (mush and head cheese...:smt105...ARE)

The Amish next door are having some kind of camp out tonight...it is a "younger couple' and buggies have been going through to the woods behind their place all evening...we are considering crashing the party:kekeke:...

...stay tuned--it could get interesting!

Yesterday, I watched a little amish boy run like his life depended on it (who knows why). He had bare feet and was obviously on a mission. He did--however--turn to wave when he heard our car on his road.

I spent morning at "Das Dutchman Essenhaus" (Middlebury's claim to fame) for breakfast (did I mention "no grits").

I spente the forenoon-into the afternoon at the home of two of my closest friends "D and K" drinking lemonade and being loved. I determined that their place is for me "the next step from Mata Gorda (Dominican Republic)" because of the affection and acceptance available to me there. I have pictures of their beautiful land and a couple of the cars D is working to restore right now (a 57 Chevy and a Corvette).

In the back right now there is a fire we have been sitting around laughing and talking in the mild Indiana sun.

It is a bit sureal to be here. I can't really explain it.

I've been wanting one of those Amish bent back rocker gliders for years! I've found a few in Ohio, but have never had room to bring one back home. One day, I will break down and order one online...I would just really rather sit in it first! I inherited my love for rocking chairs from my grandmother, and to me there is nothing more comfortable that the Amish rockers. Wish I could find one of the bent back gliders around here..

The neighbors just came by to let us know that they would be setting off fireworks in a bit if we want to watch. There are like 15 buggies parked out in the woods...We are huddled around the fire waiting for the show!

Details/pics to follow.

Cool! That's about where I am right now, assuming you're talking about Pennsylvania. I'm on the MA/PA line just south of Gettysburg. I plan to ride over to Lancaster Co when I get a break next weekend.
