while i believe the 'conspiracy theory' idea is just an exaggeration of the situation, i also refuse to believe there isn't separate, private communication to mods and other advisory type members.

and i think the 'conspiracy theory' idea is more of the desire for the 'behind the scenes' types to NOT take private shots at individual members... basically a pleading from one 'behind the scenes' type to the rest to change their stance to one individual member.

the reason we KNOW it happens is because it WAS happening when the advisory type was an open membership thing.

remember the 'hey troll this guy out' threads? while i doubt those in particular are happening... there is always an equivalent.

the refusal of ANY of the mods to talk to SoMiss is proof of this... if there wasnt a separate discussion and an urging from one member to the rest to do a particular thing... one or two would at least talk to him.

Of course the moderators talk amongst themselves. But then again, we've been accused on several occasions of taking actions on our without other moderators input. Catch-22, right? I don't have access to what goes on in the AB - not part of it and don't know what they discuss or don't discuss. I do remember a time when you were part of the "let's troll off so-and-so too", now it's a bad thing?

And YOU don't know squat as to whether or not the mods have talked to SoMiss. In FACT I spoke to him last night. Any other unfounded beliefs or allegations you'd like to throw out there? Cause this was crap 2 years ago, it stunk more a year later, and it's not smelling any better today.

Actually, if you google "Crosspoint Community Church" you can search through 10 pages and none of them have a link to this forum.

A search of "Crosspoint Community Church, Hattiesburg" gives a link to here on the second page. That thread really didn't have much negative at all. And certainly didn't say Dean was goin to Hell.

But, back on topic... I guess the question is- is this site a place for anyone to come, and for members to share anything? As long as it's within the rules of wiki.... Or is it a site that is to display only the positive aspects of Hattiesburg, and some chit chat here and there? Maybe you need a mission statement :) (maybe there is one?)

Aaron, your idea of a poll type thread, moderated (as usual) is a good one and like JoJo said, have a star type system, that a person can rate the establishment by.

Soulfoodz is a member here because someone told him about the site, he liked it, and is now giving members a discount. Do you not think if I posted about a problem at his place, that he wouldn't work to correct that problem?

How about this...have a restaurant review thread or group or whatever for 90 days, and if it's out of hand at the end of that time frame, cut it. It's going to happen one way or another. People are going to come here and post their experiences of different business, on your site. If you are vehemently opposed to it, you're (and the mods) going to be busy deleting post, and/or banning folks.

i feel reasonably certain i always rallied against that sort of behavior, if i could pull it all up i would go back and find out to make sure. but it was a long time ago.

and, ill even give the hypothetical of me being the rallymaster. Is it so wrong to change your views to the better after enough time and reflection to find out what the right and wrong thing is?

and the talking with SoMiss thing... thats based on information i had a littel better than a week ago... and given that hes not back AND given that he was told 'hey you are banned, therefore not a member of the community, therefore nobody is gonna talk to you' only led me to believe that NOBODY IS TALKING TO HIM

but... im glad you talked to him...

at any rate, ive even told aaron in the past that i apologized for giving him so much hell and that leading a community is not easy at all. (many of you will notice that i post over here now isntead of admin'ing the 'other' place) specifically i sent him an out of the blue email stating just a thing.

Okay - question...

I'm really not savvy with all of the features of this site, but if worse comes to worse, could we have a group like "after hours" that we can join and it be a "restaurant" group??? That way, it's the same idea of what AH is based on, and you're aware of the "negative" restaurant talk (ooohh no) that you may be entering into before you enter?

I deleted the thread months ago when we were number 1 for the google search "Crosspoint Community Church". I let the other thread stay because your right, it didn't have anything completely out of the ordinary like that thread had turned into. We have them here from time to time, but most don't turned in in number 1 spots on Google. It was just getting attention that I didn't want.

I can see aaron's point in this. Trashing an unsuspecting business, especially a small local one, without giving them the opportunity to defend themself is not right. Not every business owner in Hattiesburg is a member here, I don't think. And I've seen how some businesses are unscrupulous enough to get other people to pose as visitors or whatever and mount an attack on someone in the guise of a "review". I've also seen the opposite where a bunch of people give a good rating on a business just to drum up business.

However, I think commenting on restaurant experiences has already been woven into the fabric of the site and it won't be the same without it. Some of the members here have brought up some really good points in that regard.

Maybe we should have a restaurant forum that only regular members can post in (or those with 100 or more posts, whatever they're called). This would prevent new members from joining just to trash a restaurant. Assign a moderator just for that forum. I think there's a way to work this out without a blanket ban on discussing restaurants.

wilebill
07-07-2008, 03:35 PM
Also, I know some members have felt that when a business owner gets on here and starts talking up their business, they consider it to be spamming. Let's allow posts like that, but have it put in the classified section so no other member can comment on it which would prevent "plants" from attempting to drive up their credibility.

your little theory would be spot on if we are all blithering idiots and were incapable of seeing the purpose of a thread.

the fact is we are all a 'community' and take anybody that wants to join. As a part of that community... we all share our experiences with each other, good or bad.

We do the same thing at the house with our RL friends and nobody expects us to not say anything unless a representative from the business in question is there to discuss it with us.
