After spending quite some time browsing random hotel sites, I decided to check to see if anyone here has stayed at a hotel in the French Quarter either on Royal, Bourbon, Chartres, or Decatur and would recommend it.

I've stayed at the Ramada on Bourbon numerous times. It's pricey but right there in the middle of everything.

The French market inn, the bienville house, and the maison dupuy hotel are my three most favorites! I would recommend them to anyone.

We've stayed at the Inn on Bourbon and the Royal Sonesta. Both were fine, although I really liked the Royal Sonesta.

This family has 3 properties all right along the edge of Bourbon Street. All with old charm, full amentities, and all very inexpensive. I always check them out first before we go, which is pretty often, and they're usually the best for the best rate. www.hotelstmarie.com (http://www.hotelstmarie.com) , http://www.princecontihotel.com/, http://www.placedarmes.com/ (closer to Jackson Square, probably my least favorite of the 3)

http://www.saintjameshotel.com/ - This one is on the OTHER side of Canal towards the garden district, but it is JUST off of Canal so it's maybe a 3 minute walk to Bourbon. It was very nice, and had cheap parking, which is always appreciated down there.

Now these are the value properties I suggest - if you're going all out, let me know and I'll suggest some luxury places...but these are still my fav!!!

Royal Sonesta on Bourbon....love that place.....negotiated a room for under $100 last time down there....It's right across from Rick's...which isn't a bad thing....

I've stayed at the hotel St. Marie before too....it's older and the rooms are a little musty...but a quaint little French Quarter place....nice pool, good bar.....

And just how do you "negotiate"?

And just how do you "negotiate"?

I call....I ask the price....I get price....I say "Come on, now....is there anyway I could get it for X amount...." If they're really booked up, they will say no and quote you the first price....If they aren't busy, they'll usually oblige....

A small part of my job is booking hotels for our team.....so I'm used to pissing off hotel people....they're just like any other business....getting a hotel room is just like buying a house or car (on a smaller scale).....don't ever pay the sticker price without haggling first.....

My best experience staying in the French Quarter was renting a condo from www.vrbo.com (http://www.vrbo.com) (VRBO = vacation rental by owner). I stayed in a FANTASTIC 2 BR rental condo on Conti a half a block off of bourbon st. Great veranda. It was $300/night with three of us staying there. Parking right across the street. If you PM me I'll look up the owner's email address.

There was this really nice French Quarter Hotel on St. Charles but I cant remember the name of it. It was right down the street from where the Garden District starts. Maybe it had Garden in its name.

I looked up the name. It was the Garden District Hotel. It was very nice and centrally located to great restaurants and was right on the Trolly line.

Everytime I go to stay in the quarter if it isn't a busy time I stop at the welcome center and they have discount coupons for all the hotels... If they aren't booked you get them really cheap...

I stayed at the Hotel Montelone once, it was super super nice, Then I came home and found out that the hotel was / is haunted. I didn't hear anything, and wouldn't have known had it not been said on their website, but I don't go out looking for ghosts either. Anyhow it's a beautiful hotel, and a certain floor is haunted if that kind of thing interests you.

It does, but the person I'm going with is scary enough. :smt023

Does the Inn on Bourbon have a parking garage?
All I saw was "parking on street and parking lot."

We used their valet parking when we stayed there.

We used to stay at the Monteleone regularly but their prices all of a sudden went from reasonable to 'holy sh*t'..haven't even thought about it till now but it I did like it, always started off with a few drinks in that spinning bar by the lobby.

Did the Columns reopen after Katrina? My son and his wife stayed there once and report that it definitely is haunted. They vowed never to stay there again.

Worked there the last five years of my working life. Hated it so much I drove from Pearl River county every day. If you haven't been in the time since Katrina, you have a rude awakening. If you go please practice all the safety rules you can, it's a dangerous place, all of it.

the area you seem to be going is almost just like it was before katrina.

Sure it's dangerous but I don't remember a time that it hasn't been. Just be cautious and have fun.

Don't let any sour grapes spoil your trip.

Oh, I've been to NOLA several times since Katrina.
I thought that MMA was talking about the hotel.

Yes it is reopen. That is where I got ready on my wedding day and where we stayed until we left for our honeymoon. I did not come across anything to make me think it is haunted. Just do not stay in one of the front two rooms on a weekend. You can hear everything going on on from the porch and bar below. But it was very nice and they were very helpful.
