Hi I just wanted to let everyone know that on Friday, August 29th, from 8 am to 5 pm your Hattiesburg Jaycees will host their annual Labor of Love Blood drive. This blood drive helps to supply blood for the Labor Day weekend to area hospitals like Forrest General, Wesley and South Central. We will be cooking hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken with all the fixings. So please take a few minutes out of your day to come by and donate a pint of blood. You never know WHO you might be helping.

This year to help with the time factor The United Blood Service has a Fast Track Questionaire and it only takes a couple of minutes. :smt023 We hope to see everyone there. Our goal this year is 100 units of blood. Right this minute all hospitals and the blood service are short on all O type blood. Thanks for caring for others.

Where is the location? We were contacted last week by the United Blood Services (on 28th) to request we donate for Labor Day week-end and we plan to do that...but if your location is different, we will come there on the 29th.

We will be out front of the united blood services on friday from 8-5.. We will be cooking for all people who donate blood.

You can check out the cool tshirts that will be given away also to people who donate.. Picture of the shirt can be seen at hattiesburgjaycees.org (http://www.hattiesburgjaycees.org/)

Coach Fedora has signed a few shirts to be given away as door prizes.

There is no way I am giving away my blood. You aren't getting any needle anywhere near me at a blood drive.

Please don't forget about the blood drive tomorrow, even as we all make hurricane preparations. With the holiday weekend approaching, and if the hurricane does make it here, blood will be needed.

Come give blood and get a free lunch in the process.

My hubby and I made it around 10-ish and grabbed a burger even if it was a little early. We were on errands to make one trip do all, due to the gas..ugh. Hopefully more came thru during the day as a great cause. Thanks for doing it as it a lot of work to set up, etc.

Has anyone ever heard of "mad cow disease"? Well, Mrs DY, myself, and both of our daughters (who work in the medical field) spent extended periods of time in England while I was serving there in the US Air Force.

Unfortunately, "mad cow disease" broke out during one of our extended stays and as such we fall under the restriction listed under foreign travel:
"Persons who have spent long periods of time in countries where "mad cow disease" is found are not eligible to donate"

We really feel bad that we can't donate blood - especially since although I have the common "O positive", Mrs DY has the rare "AB negative" and one daughter is "O positive". I am not sure what blood type the other daughter is.

We have all been asked many times to donate blood and are more than willing to give it up - except we all know we are unacceptable donors.

So all you folks who meet Red Cross criteria - give - please!

I think my days of donating are over too, which is a shame because I'm O- and a baby donor. I used to be a regular donor but when they started having problems getting it out of me, I stopped. Needles don't bother me but when they can't get any out and have to do things to make it come out, I start feeling bad. (Btw, I don't think this has anything to do with the phlebotomist at the blood place, because they have a problem with it everywhere. They have always been wonderful at UBS, it's just me.....)

Today, they had problems, finally got some out, then just before there was enough in the bag to stop, it clotted and just stopped coming out. So, now they may not even be able to use it. Just don't think it's worth it anymore. Today it made me feel bad and normally I wouldn't mind but this time it was all for nothing...

Just wish it wasn't that way.

Btw, I wondered what the big deal was with England. Funny because she got stuck on that question with me when I told her I went to France last summer. It's just a hop, skip, and jump across the water to the UK....
