Today I became a single man again, much to my sadness. In any event, I needed to unwind last night in anticipation of this and "retired" a few of my "downer" songs, one final time:
1. "Backside of Thirty" (John Conlee -- sounds like my recent life story)
2. "Tears in Heaven" (Eric Clapton -- great song, I'll probably keep singing)
3. "Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You" (Toby Keith)
and I'll give $20 million hubbucks to anyone who can guess the Elvis song I closed with. It was not "Devil in Disguise" or the Aloha version of "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry" -- I don't think I have mentioned singing this particular song before.

Nope...but think mood song, like the others, and the whole situation I've alluded to. Are You Lonesome Tonight is a good guess, but it didn't cross my mind last night.

Lol...well, I said I'm "retiring" these songs...so I won't be singing these again (hopefully).
Let's think younger Elvis than "Release Me" and "Always On My Mind". And I could barely cover the Elvis version of "Unchained Melody" before the sinus flare-up of mine that won't go away...let alone now!

Think sad, but with a touch of masculine bravado. Nothing socially conscious like "In the Ghetto" or "If I Can Dream"..and I'll even narrow it down to pre-68 Comeback Special, though there is a tape out there of him fumbling an abbreviated version of this song in Vegas and I think after it he says something like "13 years down the drain!"

I don't think I've even heard the Elvis version of that! Just pulled it up on Youtube! But if it's that obscure, feel assured that even Shenanigans, which has an outstanding selection, probably doesn't have it. This is a song, that although not a no 1 hit, is one that the casual Elvis fan has heard before.

One Night...is one I sing regularly, but again no. "Puppet On A String" might be one I try in the future with someone I like, who knows......but still no. Don't Be Cruel and Hound Dog both hit No. 1, and this song was not a number one hit, but was the flip side of a big Elvis hit.

I would love to learn to play an acoustic guitar so I could just once serenade someone with that song, that way David Keith does in the movie "Heartbreak Hotel" (1988). But, again no...and sadly, in my old age, I struggle with the notes in the original version.

why me, lord great Gospel song, and I'm still amazed at how low J.D. Sumter's voice could go in that song! Elvis did a wonderful performance in his 1974 Memphis concert, but again not it.

Ok..another hint..not a gospel song. I've only once sang Elvis gospel at a bar and it was on the anniversary of his death last weekend when I sang "Lead Me, Guide Me". So, I'll even narrow it down a little more.
1. Not gospel.
2. pre-1968
3. somewhat sad, with a touch of bravado
4. flip side of a big Elvis hit

"Memories" was from 1968, and one of my favorites from the special. But no...this song was not released in the '68 comeback special or performed except for one time in the 70s that I know of, where Elvis forgot the words and did an abbreviated version of it. It was originally released on the flip side of a big hit of Elvis' prior to 1968. (i.e. between 1954 and November 1968 )
