Wow, a city with a population of 100,000 at least, and we only have 22,000 on the registered voter list.

Be careful that you are not confusing the population figures of the Hattiesburg MSA with those of Hattiesburg proper. Based on the 2000 Census, the City of Hattiesburg's population was just shy of 45,000. Given the fact that this is a university town, 22,000 is not a bad number of registered voters for a city of 45,000.

the numbers I had must have been a little off. I thought it was 100,000 for Hattiesburg, and 250,000 for the Forrest-Lamar Metro area.

the numbers I had must have been a little off. I thought it was 100,000 for Hattiesburg, and 250,000 for the Forrest-Lamar Metro area.

The actual populations based on the 2000 census are:
City of Hattiesburg - 44,779
Hattiesburg MSA - 111,674

Based on the 2003 Population Estimates:
City of Hattiesburg - 46,664
Hattiesburg MSA - 116,343

Now, if you are talking about the trade, or market area the numbers start to reach the neighborhood of 250,000. This would include some of Marion County, Stone County, Perry County, Greene County, George County, part of Jones County, and part of Pearl River County.

The Voter Rolls are purged for 2 reasons. First, if a voter moves to another city or county and registers in that location, the previous city or county is notified by mail. You can't vote in 2 places (Illigal). Second, the election commisioners recieve the obituarys which notify them who has died.

The people who are upset about this are obviously the ones who try to find cracks in the system and vote twice or use someone's name that no longer is living or has moved away. Get over it.

I am told that the City Council never approved purging the voter list. To do so after the deadline for registering for a particular election is a violation of the Voting Rights Act. Betsy Rowell is the one who asked that it be done, and had no authority to do so. She will now have the Justice Department investigating the matter. What a shame. Betsy has taken us back 40 years in race relations.

Don't feed the troll!!!!!!!!!!

There is a difference between a Voter Roll Purge and removing voters who are no longer alive or have registered in another county. There are rules governing when rolls can be purged but removing certain voters can be done at any time if they have reregistered.

By the way, ONE concil member cannot order any action alone.
