I don't know why we need a "PM extra" story to tell us that.

Holidays are terrible for real news stories...At WDAM we'd always have the standard fireworks safety story as well as the everyone is out having a good time at Paul B. Johnson and other swimming holes.

Reality (or, as I shall call you from now on, Falsehood): No, I'm not being facetious. Open the H.A. tomorrow morning and show me where they run that one-sentence blurb. BTW, do you actually read the H.A., or are you just one of these bandwagon hacks? Just curious.
Tully: Consume fecal matter and cease life functions, sweetheart.

Easy now, I wouldn't want you to get a paper cut from having to look up all of those big words.

So did anyone find that blurb in the American this morning? Or do any of you dolts even read the American?
lamarrebel
07-05-2005, 01:33 PM
Rugrat, If you want respect, you need to show some. Most of us appear to be well read on the issues, and a couple on here I know personally and can vouch for. Maybe someone on here is a dolt, but I tend to believe the pot may be calling the kettle black in this instance.
WeeOne2008
07-05-2005, 01:52 PM
Yeah, you're very well read on the issues because you don't understand the difference between a mid-day internet update on a newspaper's Web site and an article that actually gets published in the newspaper.
My guess is that most of you don't read the American in the first place. Heck, if this weren't a message board, the intelligence you display would lead me to believe most of you don't read at all.
Speaking of the pot and kettle, you'll have to excuse me now. I have to go cook breakfast for your girlfriend. BOOYAAAAAH

weeone, please grow up and smile. Thinks will get better for you. Okay?
lamarrebel
07-05-2005, 02:35 PM
Well, first of all, it's a wife, not a girlfriend, and she just called to say she's cooked for me.
The American's afternoon online updates are very weak most of the time, I agree entirely. But, comparatively speaking to other cities Hattiesburg's size, the American in general is weak. That's why I only sometimes get it out of the rack, and mostly read it online.
WeeOne2008
07-05-2005, 03:02 PM
Tell your wife she missed a ribeye and poached eggs.
As for the American somehow being sub-par for cities the size of Hattiesburg...uh, what? Are you out of your mind? Have you read the Meridian Star or the Sun Herald lately? The American is easily one of the top three dailies in the state, and it may be the second-best (the Clarion-Ledger being first, for obvious reasons).
I'm sure they pissed you off last year when they didn't come sprinting with camera in hand when your men's church group had a pancake breakfast or something lame like that. Get with the program, sweetheart.

07-05-2005, 03:03 PM
Hey folks, let's all do Wweeone a big favor and just ignore his personal attacks. It's obvious that one needs a certain level of maturity to participate on a board like this, and Weeone is severly lacking in that department. After all, look at the screen name.
And Weeone, once again, things are going to get a little better for you. Okay?

I can't believe Rugrat compared the HA to a "real" big newspaper. HAHAHAHAH
:faintthud
Please, the Hattiesburg Bird Cage liner better than the Sun Herald? Give me a break! They get scooped by WDAM, and you guys know how bad that is!
lamarrebel
07-05-2005, 08:51 PM
Often times, the Hattiesburg American gets scooped by The Indpendent. Getting whipped by a weekly paper, I would think is even worse.
While I'll put the Hattiesburg American ahead of Meridian Star, it is worlds behind the Sun Herald and well behind the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in quality of news coverage.

I suppose what bothers me the most about the HA is the lack of information available within the paper on the local level. Granted, there's not a lot that goes on here, but there's much that could be printed in the paper. What about City Council and School Board Agendas? How about some form of investigative journalism? Maybe a consumer-oriented column that allows community citizens to write in about problems in the city (cracked sidewalk, overgrown lots), and then takes the concern to the appropriate official and follows up on the concern until it is fixed (such as the What's Your Problem? column in the Birmingham News). What else, MyHattiesburg readers? What should be added to the HA to make it a more desirable paper?
Sir Mickey Mouse
07-05-2005, 10:11 PM
Try removing the Associated Press wire from their newsroom so they have to write. We don't need the HA providing national news ... we have CNN, the Internet, or other sources for that. As far as state news, maybe send one of their reporters (since not much is going on here) to Jackson to be a capital reporter. Or, they can get plenty of Jackson or state stories from their Mama paper, the Clarion-Ledger.

I'd like to see more local sports coverage. Just about every kid in town plays some sport, yet there's hardly any scores given for any of them. They seem to cover USM pretty well, but even high school scores are rarely given in a timely manner.

The only thing that The Independent scoops is soft serve ice cream. That fish wrap uses more unnamed sources than any paper I've ever seen. Not to mention that they oftentimes just outright fabricate stories (i.e. Amy Tuck jumping back to the Democratic Party...yeah, her and George W. Bush both). If that qualifies as credible journalism in your book, then you go ahead and keep reading.
And I don't know when the last time was that you sweethearts read the Sun Herald, but it's horrible nowadays. It used to be a really good paper, but those days are long gone.

WeeOne2008, what would you suggest the Hattiesburg American add to their coverage in order to become a better paper? I know you believe that they are a high-class paper, but surely you agree that there is always room for improvement. So, what would you like to see added?

I did as the weeone suggested and picked up a copy of the HA yesterday. Much to my suprise (not!) it contained even less than what was promised in the PM update.
There were about 1 to 1.5 pages of local news, several pages of AP wire stuff, two Health pages (geez, if I need health info I will either google it or ask my Dr. directly), a couple of local sports stories, a whole bunch of national sports stories (again AP stuff), the funnies, the horiscope, and the classifieds. Other than that...pretty much nada, zip, nothing.
Even the few local stories were very shallow with little or no real in-depth reporting, or even good writing for that matter.

Yeah, and you're a regular William Faulkner, slappy. Come on -- if you're such a newspaper critic, then let's hear something a little more specific than that.
"Uh, the writing was bad." How was it bad?
"Uh, it was shallow." How was it shallow?
"Uh, it wasn't in-depth." How wasn't it in-depth? What questions were you left with?
It's easy to throw around these lines that you pick up listening to Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. Doing your own thinking is quite another matter.
But hey, you keep drinking that Kool-Aid, pal.

Yea, and I don't make my living writing news either. But then again it seems that neither do the folks who do the writing for the HA.

You know little man, I really don't have to explain or justify my opinions to you. I have yet to see you make even the smallest of positive contributions to any discussion taking place here. Look at your reputation points, apparently I am not the only one with that sentiment.

OK, so basically what you're saying is that you have no reason for thinking poorly of the HA. That's what I thought.
That sounds like something a 3-year-old would say..."I don't have to tell you! Waaah!" Moron.
