there was a dam and a big lake on Bouie River that one could fish and ski on along with a nice big water park like the one in Gulfport, or the one the reservation. Were missing the boat because they say they caught a fish that they allowed no one to see as proof that its there! (many many of these fish in fla.)

I wish there was a waterpark sort of like Rapids or Geyser Falls.
A microbrewery would be cool
Yea, Olive Garden would be nice (Okay Aaron you claimed it and so did I so now only three more)
I would really like a Barnes & Noble
A Starbucks downtown would be nice.
I'm sure there are others, I need to think on this one a bit.
Oh yea I almost forgot, I wish there was a large lake here also Fire Extinguisher. Next time you have a chance go to the 10th floor of Johnson Science Tower at USM and look at the sturgeon pics from the Bouie.
I still maintain that it could be done without damming the river and without affecting the sturgeon habitat.

let's see, this list could take a few minutes
1. good, inclusive Mayor who doesn't take orders from a divisive and self-appointed preacher and surround himself with incompetence in several positions
2. a Kroger (not enough competition in the grocery markets, with Albertson's and Super K-Mart gone)
3. a Ribcage (great barbeque/ribs place started in Tupelo, now with a second location in Oxford)
4. Abner's (chicken fingers better than Willie T's or Bailey's)
5. Vanelli's (pizza/Italian based in Tupelo that makes a joke out of Paninos)
6. Roadhouse
7. Ruby Tuesday's
8. secondary infrastucture (beyond Hwy 98 and 49) that meets the transportation needs of a growing area

2. godiva chocolate store
3. gas war going on the prices are killing me!

Kong, a strip bar? I'm disappointed in you.
I don't see the big deal with Olive Garden. I prefer Macaroni Grill, but we're getting both in the near future so that isn't on my list of "I wish there was a...."
Here's what I wish there was:
1. waterpark / reservior
2. more developed downtown with events/activities after business hours
3. an outlet mall
lamarrebel
07-08-2005, 06:16 PM
an outlet mall? reality, it sounds like you and my wife would get along...
strip clubs? I'm glad they're gone...and I applaud the Forrest County Board of Supervisors for effectively ridding us of them. Jackson, New Orleans and the Coast are close enough for such "entertainment".
Downtown redevelopment is beginning, but obviously still has a long way to go. As long as the city continues to move west, I see even more obstacles in the way.
Tully Mars
07-08-2005, 07:42 PM
I agree about an outlet mall. At least that way my wife could shop at one without spending $2.21 gasoline to get to the one in Gulfport or Foley.
I think I mentioned this in another thread but I have a major sweet tooth and wish we had a really good candy store here. Do you guys remember the one that used to be in the food court at Cloverleaf pre-turtle creek (I think that it was in with the caramel corn place)? That guy made the best homemade turtles with fresh pecans, chocolate and homemade caramel. YUM YUM.

haha Hubbarrister... It's not that I am one of those women who just loves to shop, but those outlets have some great deals, and I'm like Tully... I don't want to have to drive an hour or more for a deal. Sort of defeats the purpose with the current gas prices. ;)

Oohhh, yeah... Trader Joe's!! Buy raw cashews and roast them fresh...can't be beat.
An, ummm, Gentlemen's Club might be nice, I agree. No dives, though.
A vibrant downtown. Although Brownstones and Walnut Circle do a good job. Haven't been to the Coca cola place yet, seems like a younger crowd.
Yes to a big grocery chain - Krogers, Von's, etc.
A real California burger joint - In 'n Out, Carl's Jr. (which did buy Hardy's, almost as good...)
A real Italian restaurant. Il Pomadori is good, but too small and there's room for better. Some place that serves ricotta pie!!

What is the love with all the chain restaurants? :smt078:confused: We have plenty of them. I agree with Tully that a starbucks downtown and or a microbrewery would be, as Borat would say, VERY NICE!
How about a thriving downtown with lofts, condos, hotels?
How about a better wing joint than Buffalo Wild wings (way way way overrated IMHO).
How about a nice jazz and blues themed restaurant and bar downtown?
I wish we had better seafood options and or a oyster bar, being so close to the coast.

I completely agree!! I think some people who are obsessed with chain restaurants have probably never experienced good food from a real place that actually cooks their food and doesn't have it shipped frozen from headquarters and heated up in a microwave... Olive Garden= way over rated!

Geeez, ya'll sound like you'd want to live in Greenville. We have almost all of the above, and in duplicate in some cases. Petsmarts, Petcos, Roadhouse, Panera's, McAllisters, Lake Saluda, Olive Gardens, real Greek, Italian, Indian and Mexican restaurants. Even have one restaurant that serves only exotic meats, like emu, etc. Many Publix Stores, Minor League Baseball, Convention Center that brings in all the most famous acts from Elton John to George Strait and Gaithers Homecoming. Three playhouses, comedy bars, two micro brewerys, Two malls larger than Turtle Creek, Dunkin Donut and Krispy Cream, Four city Libraries, Two Barnes & Nobles, two Star Bucks, Books a Million and really the most beautiful tree lined downdown area that thrives nightly with retail stores, nice restaurants, bars, and people watchers. Safe, lighted and the people are college students from Furman U. and Bob Jones U., young business execs to elderly couples. There are upscale lofts, apartments and condos right downtown, expensive but they are there, and a two hotels. The Hilton and the Westin. $200 plus a night. Falls Park on the Reedy River that runs through downtown and the brand new baseball park is downtown too. Greenville, SC really is a nice nice place to live. And the atmosphere is still friendly and Southern. Know what the population is? A little over 50,000. There is a relatively large number within 25 mile radius with, satelite towns like Simpsonville, Mauldin, Easley, Greer and Taylors adjoining. Ya'll come visit sometime.

Are there any that are better? When I lived in Jackson we has SusCom and it was good, but that was years ago before all of the digital cable and technology that there is now. I have not lived anywhere else to know about any other cable providers.
I've had a time with Comcast internet servoce this weekend, and on-demand will go out sometimes, giving me an error message right when I'm in the mood to watch a free movie.

No probs here with comcast internet all weekend. I've have a sick child here so that covers my weekend plans. It does go out on occaision but averages 1 time out of a month for about an hour. BTW I live in Petal but not sure if that makes a difference on outages.

Go live outside of Petal and deal with the crappy Galaxy cable and all the excuses they give, no high speed internet, and you'll be grateful for Comcast.
With Galaxy, we always had 2-5 channels out, no MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy, Spike. Crappy signal, bad reception on 1/2 the channels that they blamed on the source... and all for $40 a month...

If it's the internet that's the big deal, I wouldn't know... I use Bellsouth DSL and it's always on, always working and 100%, as long as my phone is 100%... I've had a few episodes, particularlly in the past few months, with my phone not working on Monday mornings, and no phone-no DSL.

I want a different cable provider.
Maybe someone could tell me why cities only have one cable provider. I think the City Council is paid off, personally. There's no excuse to have a monopoly of cable providers. We have Charter Cable here. That's it. While the contract was coming up for renewal, people were writing letters by the thousands to get rid of Charter. All the while Charter was buiding a huge regional office building, adding phone service and high speed internet. You can't tell me the fix wasn't in. No way the'd be investing millions and millions if there was any way they'd lose their contract, for years down the road. Look at your city and/or county council. I'm not sure which one is responsible, but you can bet money is getting passed around.

Yep. Same for all tech support now. All latino or arab you can hardly understand to start with.
Actually, that wasn't the problem I had at all. The tech support I dealt with were American, but they were clueless. They tried to transfer me and hung up on me twice, and there seemed to be a lot of disorganization between the billing and technical support (which was handled through a national number) and the local company.
Now Dell, on the other hand... I had such a bad experience with their tech support being able to only read an English script and not understand my questions at all that I won't buy from them. I talked to two different representatives and neither could answer a simple question about my order, they just kept trying to read from the irrelevant script. That was depressing.

Sheesh Lips...if you need to lose weight, then I'll be on this diet FOREVER!!!
well I don't actually NNNNEEEED to lose weight... just would prefer to so that my clothes fit!
We do need more places in H'burg that offer quick food with healthy options. I get sick of subway and mcdonalds salads. I'm not a light eater... a little lettuce does not fill me up!

I wish there was a Drive in movie theatre in Hattiesburg! I think it would be awesome for the city to raise money to fix the Beverly. It wouldnt be that hard, we could an organization like lions club to hold buckets at redlights and stuff and take up donations to fix the Beverly back up... I would help out too, I am really low on community service hours for my SAEP at school.

Okay, I've thought about it for a while and really had a difficult time thinking of something that H'Burg needs that they already don't have or are getting soon. :) But ya'll starting talking about diets and healthy food and it just dawned - a Whole Foods Market. New Orleans has one (or at least they did pre-K) and Houston have them too. They carry more of an assortment of organic foods and healthy choices with a deli included. They are really neat.

it was open a couple years ago... did they close it down again?

Or The Fresh Market. It's just like Whole Foods but it is more of a southern company. In the mean time help support the New Yokel Market downtown.

Yeah - either one. BTW what is the New Yokel Market? I'm not familiar with this one. I like the Corner Market on Hardy, it has some nice selections of veggies.

Whole Foods is nice, more expensive than other markets but real good quality. Their 365 Balsamic Vinegar was rated highly be America's Test Kitchen. But Trader Joe's is still my favorite for a great selection.
Tully Mars would like Trader Joe's, the employees wear Hawiian shirts and
the store has a Margaretaville atmosphere. Had some of Trader Joe's lobster ravioli last week and it was great!

Okay - where is Trader Joes? I've never heard of it - but sounds really good!

Unfortunatly, the nearest Trader Joe's are Florida, N. Carolina or Missouri. But it's on my wish list for Hattiesburg. I also forgot to mention it's wine selection of "Two Buck Chuck" , Charles Shaw wines that are now up to $2.99 a bottle. It's not bad stuff.

I wish there were more home-grown businesses (especially restaurants) and less chain stores (especially restaurants).

I miss Trader Joes and Wild Oats. Trader Joes has lots of good stuff, cheap. *sigh*

Probably be a good project for the Jaycees or Sertoma's. I've done my time in those two organizations.

I wish we had a nice big grocery store ( Like Jitney Premier). I hate going to Walmart to buy groceries. You have to walk all over the place then you have to deal with rude people and stockers all in your way. I also wish we had the premier back because of their selection of items. It was a cooks dream store. We need something like it.

I wish we had a grocery like Albertson's or Jitney, too. I miss the pistachios at Albertson's. I think I left a trail of shells behind my buggy every time I shopped.

yup, Two Buck Chuck - i think there's an old bottle in the wine cabinet right now. Sigh...
Trader Joe's has a nice, funky attitude to it, plus great fresh fruits and cheeses and healthy lunch sandwiches... their own cereal and coffee, good stuff!

I've often wondered why Wal-Mart even stays open all night if they won't even let you down the aisles with all of the stockers. Drives me crazy. I mean, I know they have to restock, but do it like Corner Market, a couple of boxes at a time.
I know it's been mentioned before on this thread, but since we are back on the subject of grocery stores, I wish we had a Kroger.

Oh yes, please, another good grocery. I like Corner Market and shop there, but they're pretty high on some of my staples like cat food and litter == and also hate WallyWorld. At least CM has a more human scale, and the people are nice.
