Since Amy Tuck is term limited, who should be Republicans nominate to succeed her. At present time, there are four candidates considering the race:
Alan Nunnelee - Tupelo: State Senator from District 6 (Lee and Pontotoc counties). Chairman of the Senate Public Health Committee
Nick Walters - Ridgeland: A Wiggins native and former Stone County GOP Chairman, Nick is now the Director of the Mississippi Rural Development Administration under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nick also was the GOP nominee against Eric Clark in 1999.
Phil Bryant -- Brandon -- USM graduate and State Auditor since 1997.
Charlie Ross -- Brandon -- State Senator from Rankin County. A Harvard Law School graduate, whose mother was this author's 8th grade math teacher (taught me well). Currently, Chairs the Senate Juniciary "A" committee.

Well, Aaron, I will try to help you out along the way. This one is actually tough for me because I personally know each of these men, and think any of them would do a fine job as Lieutenant Governor. Assuming it's all or a combination of these candidates, I will go vote quietly on Primary day in August of '07.

Omerto,
Probably because the GOP isn't likely to nominate a Democrat as the Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. :)

My vote is for Nick Walters. He and I worked for three years on a project together and always proved himself to be sincere, hard working and a man of his word.

The question I asked was who should the Republicans nominate in '07. By definition, that excludes Democrats. I'll create a Democrat poll in a few days, but of course with HCG gone, there's no Democrats left on here!

As far as Amy Tuck's future, that is hard to say. If Eric Clark were to not run for re-election in 2007, I could see Amy running for Secretary of State. Of course, the latest news is that Clark is interviewing with the College Board for the position of Commissioner of Higher Education (pays about $250K a year versus $80K as SOS). Amy said in today's Tupelo Daily Journal, that if Clark gets this appointment, Amy would be inclined to complete her term as Lt. Governor, rather than accept an appointment from the Governor.
If Clark leaves the Secetary of State's office, I'd personally love for Haley to appoint Nick Walters. Nick would be an excellent SOS, and he would use the bully pulpit of his office to finally get Voter ID passed I think he probably faces an uphill race for Lt. Governor in the primary, and this would give him a great opportunity to get serve and be elected to a full term in '07.

Whoo hoo, I may not agree with you on all of your politics, but I give many :smt038 to voter ID. We need that passed any way possible (that's legal)

Voter ID is a no-brainer in my opinion. Simply put, requiring identification at the polls is esential to maintain the integrity of the voting process. It has nothing to do with disenfranchsing African Americans, and if it did I would be the first to oppose it.
We are required to show identification in order to carry forth all types of daily activies, including cashing a check and checking out a book from the library. If voter ID is about denying African Americans the right to vote, is requiring ID at the library about denying blacks the right to read? This is simply a red herring, and the Legislative Black Caucus knows it.

The Northeast Daily Journal's article yesterday also mentioned the Senate President Pro Tem Travis Little of Corinth might be in the running for Lt. Gov in '07 as well. Little is one of Tuck's biggest allies in the Senate. However, I believe he'll face a tough face, in part because his brother Thurston is in prison on corrpuption charges and he is already pushing his mid 60s and this office in recent years has tended to elect younger candidates.

Latest word is Nick Walters is now leaning towards staying on at Rural Development in Katrina's aftermath -- he can probably do more good there. Also, both Charlie Ross and Phil Bryant are rumored to be coming to Lamar County for the Recongition Dinner next week. Haven't heard any more of late about Alan Nunnelee's plans...but the qualifying deadline is still over a year away.

Voter ID would be good but with the new State-wide voter system almost in place statewide, I think a lot of the fraud will be reduced.

While I don't know the whole story or the history, maybe she keeps coming back because she has something to say and sometimes it's good to hear people who disagree with us?

I don't see why she is getting negative points when she makes non confrontational comments. If she crosses the line..maybe but that happens with others too. There are several people on this forum who make wild comments about judges and private citizens and no ones says anything.

You seem to have double standards here. I'm not posting names here, but you know as well as I do that several posts on here are calling out elected officials (which is ok, I guess) as well as private citizens by name and they seem to be immune for any negative response. This Hillary person has made some off the wall comments but she seem to have lightened up some but she can't practice free speech or even give a basic comment.

I'm flattered that you think I am so prominent, powerful, or important enough that I can somehow strip Hill of her rights. I'm flattered to know you think I'm important enough to have her banned in some way from this site. You imply both assumptions in your post. But the fact is that I'm just a nobody just like all the rest. A nobody who asked a fellow poster a simple question. Why are you so threatened by a simple question. I'm sure if you and Alpha Male would have heeled for a moment and let Hill speak for herself, she would have more than adquately answered the question on her own.
Dude, you are trippin. Where the hell did you read that I thought you were prominent, powerful or important? I am not threatened by a question and certainly not by you. You made the comment "Why are you back Hillary?", and my question was why can't she express her opinions and that you obviously think your opinions are more important.

The new voting machines should cut out a good bit of fraud. But showing an id to vote needs to happen. I've heard of people voting in several counties.

I know you all say no Democrats...but keep on eye on Randy "Bubba" Peirce. He was the legislator from green county, that was an up and coming democrat...but then Governor Barbour apointed him as a judge. Rumor has it he may switch parties and run for Lt. Gov. He is a sharp as a tack

with a name like bubba and being from greene county I picture a toothless redneck. But this guy is a CPA and a lawyer. I've heard him on talk radio and he's sharp. I think he would fit nicely in the state auditor race as well as the lt gov.

Bubba never really acted like a Republican in the Legislature, and perhaps it was because of the district he represented (very rural, old time Southern Democrat, mixed with a sizable African American minority). However, his law partner, Paul Walley, who ran to succeed him is a Republican, and a former Perry County GOP Chairman.
The latest I've heard on Pierce is that he might run for Attorney General against Hood next year. The only thing, though, is that as a sitting Judge, you must resign upon qualifying to run for non judicial office. Does Pierce want to give up an over $100K a year job to run an uphill race against an incumbent AG?
Phil Bryant is clearly the favorite going in, though I expect Charlie Ross to run a spirited primary campaign. I like both candidates and face somewhat of a quandary. Charlie is probably slightly better qualified (10 years in the State Senate, which he'd preside over -- Harvard Law School grad, and stauchly conservative), but Phil is probably more electable in November (more dynamic personality, higher name recognition from having served 9 years as Auditor).
