The next city council meeting will be on Tues. July 19, 2005 at 6 pm on the 2nd Floor fo City Hall. Carter Carroll attended my neighborhood associationi meeting last night and discussed a recent rash of burglaries in our neighborhood. He urged us to attend the meeting and voice our concerns to the counsel and to call Kim (sp?) Bradley and let him know our thoughts on the Chief.

If you are having problems with crime in your neighborhood, I urge you to attend this meeting. I have been reading posts on this board since January, and have never posted. I feel compeled to post this now and to try to encourage the citzens of these neighborhoods to take action. The time is now to present the issues related to crime in our neighborhoods to the city council.

I wish we could have the room packed out. Maybe we should have some myhattiesburg.com T-shirts made up or something... :smt102

I'm working on them, should be done by the 19th, but the t-shirt company is having problems and pushed production back to early next week. If it doesn't get pushed back again, then I'll have them by Tuesday.

Aaron, I would love to have a t-shirt too. Please make sure to let us know where we can get one at. I will wear mine proudly. I just wanted to say that I have called Kim Bradley about my opinion of the chief and at that point he advised me I was about #103 he had heard from. Aaron please keep us informed about the shirts. I love this sight and think it was a wonderful idea. Thank you.

Wow! 103 people have contacted Bradley? That's amazing. Hopefully he is taking to heart what everyone is saying.

XC9, thanks for contacting Bradley, I'm not about trying to sway you one way or the other, just as long as your involved. People don't realize that your government can do a lot more for you, if you become a part of the process.

I do not need to be swayed. Those that know me know where I stand and those that do not know me can read my blogs posted about our police department and know exactly where I stand. I still would like a t-shirt so please let me know about this.

if kim bradley does vote aganist the mayor, that would still be a 3-2 vote which he can veto, only a 4-1 will work. who is waiting in the wings to take over if this happens?

I have been asking alot of people in different cities who have the same form of government that we have and all I keep haring back is if the council has a majority vote on an issue or appointment, the mayor can not veto or over ride the council's decision. If anyone can find a state statue that is different from this please let me know. I know the council has inquired with the state AG about what power they have in the matter of appointments and the confirmation process.

Carter Carroll said on WDAM that the council is using the month of July to look over the mayor's appointments and will decide to vote on them during the first meeting in august. I will get a a copy of the city council's agenda for the july 19th meeting. Aaron are you able to post it. You know me and my computer skills " The council meeting will be over by the time I get it posted"

The city council meeting agenda wasn't ready earlier today and should be ready to be picked up on monday. I talked with a few council members today and they said "no plans to vote on reappointment of department heads until the first or second meeting in august." The council decided to use the month of july to look over and discuss the mayor's department heads. I also learned today that if the vote is 3-2 not in favor of the mayor's appointment then the MAYOR CAN NOT VETO IT.. :smt102

Noway,
Hopefully that time the council is taking will give them time to really look at these appointments and decide what's best for our city. At least it shows that they will not be rushing this decision. It also allows more citizens time to put the heat on Kim Bradley. My biggest fear is that we may have lost Rowell's seat on the City Council as Bradley is shmoozed by DuPree and his clan. We can only hope that Bradley can see past the smoke and mirrors directly to the facts.

Who exactly are going to be the people up for appointment. I know Wynn, but who are the others. And is it a package deal of take one take all, or are they voted for on an individual basis?

Let's see, help me out here guys...

Police Chief - Wynn
CAO - Beverly Commodore
Urban Development Director - Willie Horton
Public Works Director - Bennie Sellers
Parks and Recreation Director - Clemon Terrell

Who else?

Oh yea, as far as I know each has to be voted on individually.

Dupree has stated "61 percent of the vote" So he is sticking with his current department heads. IMO if some of the department heads or Dupree feel they will not get the vote of approval from the council, then you might see some retirements or better job Opportunity's.

Each one individually has to be approved by the council. I know they are glad that I am not on the council because I would not approve of any of them, because anyone that can work and take orders from the so call mayor without jumping up in his face would not get my vote. You need to be qualified for the position and believe in the work you do and not let the mayor or anyone else change your decision on who you hire for positions in your department, because only the department head would know if you were quailified and not the mayor or the REV would know. Because each department head should be well quailified to know their job and anyone who is hired within their department. If you don't and you let an outsider decided for you you are not a strong leader and you don't even know yourself what your people need to do for you!

I posted this in another thread, but thought it would apply here too.

I would also like to encourage those who live in the surrounding area to attend the council meetings. I'm sure there not going to be checking IDS at the door, since they won't do it at the voting booth. Even if you don't live in the limits, you are affected by the city. I live not but 100 yards from the limits, but I do work within the limits, what happens with the city affects my job greatly. You never now when they might bring up incorporating more of Oak Grove, someone has to be there to oppose it, unless they change some things.
