I rented Open Water the other night 'cause it was one of the few "big name" movies that I hadn't seen yet.
Don't waste a good rental on it. Wait for it to come on TV then change the channel to something else. :thumbs_do
I give it a 1. It sucked. The best thing about it is that it's well less than 90 minutes long.
Another good thing is that it gives you a warning about what could go wrong on a scuba-diving expedition, since it was based on a true story. Other than that it's very boring, the acting is not noteworthy, the story (even though true) sucked, there's practically no cinematography worth speaking of unless you like a lot of water shots.
If you like scary movies, then there's about 2 scenes for you. Find those and spare yourself from the rest.
The worst part of the whole thing was the ending. It sucked rabbits through a water hose. I kept wanting to see if that was the real ending or not. :flush:

Someone distracted me as I was posting this and I forgot to add the poll. I tried editing it and I see it can't be done. Sorry.
Is there anyway for you to fix this for me aaron? Or should I just redo it and have you delete this one?

no problem. I didn't know everyone couldn't add polls to the threads. It gives me an option to do it in thread tools, I'm going to see if I can enable this for everyone.

Wilebill,
I agree! That movie was terrible. We watched it several months back and it was the WORST I have ever seen. It made me sea sick!!!!

I gave it 1 star only because there wasn't a zero star option.

yeah, I didn't see it because I've seen a Magnum P.I. episode just like it.

* I agree Bill, this was one of the worst attempts at a movie I have ever seen.

I guess there is something for everyone. I rented this a while back and was enthralled. That is right, enthralled. I would be interested in knowing what films are rated highly by the folks who didn't like this? I suspect it would be something I hated! LOL! OK. It has no special effects. It is a slice of real life, not boring. Its mundane conversation belies the tenseness beneath. I constantly felt that I was in that horrendous situation and I would have just screamed bloody murder. It was so real. That is what the horror of it was for me. The drip drip drip of the realization that they were alone! Oh well.

I saw it on TV Saturday. I'd heard it was bad, and wasn't disappointed. It was worse than Blair Witch! At least this time I didn't pay the price of a movie ticket for it.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
I knew that they weren't going to "make it" and was still aggrevated by the ending. What the crap?
We still laugh at the checkout lady at Fred's where I bought my dvd. I put it on the counter and she said,"Oh, this movie is scary, it's too bad they die." My sons and I got in the car and just rolled! :smt023 Thanks.

That's why I love forums, I don't even remember reading that line, but got a good laugh this morning. I'm going to have to remember that one.

It was on TV the other night, and I agree, it sucks! Why didn't they swim to that buoy? Freakin' laziods!!! I mean honestly, you've only been at sea for a day or so, and you can't even swim to a bouy 1/4 mile away? And what was up with the ending? Heck, I was READY to see them get eaten, it was SO lame. I gotta get into the movie makin' business.

My husband & I watched it on TV yesterday. IMO, it was poorly written. The ending was horrible. The woman just slipped off her gear & sank down in the water, giving up in order to be the next shark snack. It was horrible!:smt118

No,No,No,--they didn't swim because they wanted to stay at the pick-up spot. It is a true story so the "ending" was the ending! She knew it was over. The guy was already gone. The sharks were coming for her. What would you have done? It is a total metaphor for life. It is a slow, pulsating building of tension. It was wonderful and the fear comes from within not from some external threat. Panic, alone--on the cold deep ocean. The silence is deafening. The waves just lapping with a little spray and and a tad cold. The sun is going down. No one is coming. Do I hear a motor. Nope-still all alone. Just because you didn't like it doesn't make it awful. I hated some films that I would acknowledge were decent films. I hated Men in Black! Did you like it?? Post meant all in good fun, by the way, if I sound overwrought!

ONE WORD... ."SWIM!!!!"
I found myself bored, however could not change the channel. I hate movies that end like that as well!! BOOOOO!!! I heard that there is a documentray about it, which I would love to see it! Let me know if you have seen it... or more importantly if it is worth watching!! :)

Well, since nobody was there to see what actually happened, all that is speculation. The writers decided to write it that way. They could have written it differently and nobody could dispute it.

Are you on drugs?

bpitt-now that is not nice! no drugs-maybe I am just able to see more subtly than you. Maybe I have a better imagination than you. Maybe you just couldn't get it? Have you considered that?
Wilebill--The people were gone in the end. Disappeared in the ocean in the middle of nowhere. They obviously drowned. Most likely from fatigue and exposure. Possibly sharks. How many different ways could that happen? Maybe a space ship came to get them?
I agree to disagree. :smt054

See, this is how I would have written it:
The guy and girl cling to each other, knowing that rescue will probably never happen. They decide to make love one last time, so each of them rips the wet suit off the other and they make mad passionate monkey love. (For the women in the audience:) They cuddle afterwards for 15 minutes.
Just then the guy sees a shark fin headed his way so he screams, "I won't go down without a fight you lousy sumbitches!" He swims furiously toward the shark, knife in his teeth, and rage in his eyes. He attacks it, slashing, slashing, slashing. He manages to mortally wound the shark, but in so doing, attracts other sharks to the area.
"You fool!", yells the woman. "Now you've killed both of us!" She throws her air tank at him, hitting him in the head and killing him instantly. She begins to swim away (her breasts gleaming in the moonlight) when suddenly her body lurches forward and a look of astonishment crosses her face. She is suddenly lurched back and forth and propelled through the water at unhuman speed. Suddenly she is jerked below the waves and the water turns red...
See, it's all in the writing. My ending is much better.

This is a movie that should have been made by the Sci Fi Channel. Boring all the way around. True story or not.
