What does having a ring on have to do with anything? :smt102 Was your point that she is married?? First I'll point out the ring is on her RIGHT hand, not her left. Second, even if it was on her left hand, does that exclude all women from being trashy simply because they wear a ring on their left hand ring finger?

Major General Blount gave a Power Point presentation of some of his experiences in Iraq. He was in the first wave that entered Baghdad. He spoke of how the military was not prepared for the utter collapse of the government and how hard it was to try to restore order to the country. Most all bureaucrats and government workers quit their job except for a lot of the medical community and it was up to the US military to restore order and establish a working government.

At first the kids were against the military and threw rocks at the soldiers. The soldiers couldn't tell if it was rocks or grenades being thrown, so they got with the village and city leaders and told them to instruct the kids not to throw rocks. In a few days that stopped, but the kids would still yell things at the soldiers. Eventually the kids learned that the soldiers were trying to help them and they actually became friendly. The parents would tell the soldiers that they couldn't gain their friendship with candy and favors, but apparently the kids learned the truth of the situation.

The entire infrastructure was in disarray, including water, sewer, and especially electricity, but it had actually been that way, to a great extent, even before the invasion. As a rule, only the elites (the Shiites or Sunnis?) had electricity 24 hours a day and others may only have it 2 or so hours a day. But they took great pride in their schools even though the government paid no or very little money towards education.

When the invasion started the schools closed and the Iraqi military took most of their munitions from the depots and dispersed them around the country, a lot of times in schools because they knew the Americans wouldn't bomb those. But they also lost control of the ammo and as we know a lot of it eventually wound up in the hands of terrorists.

So the US did a school by school search and cleared out all the ammo they found and started repairing the schools, even though most of the damage was not caused by the invasion. The DOD would pay for repairs to infrastructure, including schools, but Gen. Blount said there's some law against buying school supplies. They found all the teachers they could, who, along with all other government employees, hadn't been paid in about 2 months. School teachers made an average of $25 per month under Sadam, so the US gave them all raises to $100 a month. (I wanted to ask about this - the US found a cache of $816M in a palace all in $100 bills and that's what they were paid with. I wondered if they were given raises to $100 because that was the denomination that they found :smt102 )

So it all boils down to that the US is trying to win over the hearts of the kids, who could be the next terrorists. If we can keep this from happening it should make it better for us and the rest of the world in years to come.

Gen. Blount was also in charge of the embedded journalists during the invasion and did all the scheduling of which journalist would be where. He talked a pretty good bit about this and showed some photos of him and Ted Koppel who stayed pretty close to the General. He spoke of a few journalists who wanted to be on the front lines during the invasion of Baghdad and who wound up getting killed because of it.

All in all a very interesting presentation from someone who was there and who had first hand knowledge of what went on, what it's like now, and what the future plans are. It paints a different picture of who the Iraqi people really are - not a bunch of terrorists who are out to kill all of us.

And then we had food and friendship after the meeting. Some of the people in attendance wanted to donate to the cause so we put out a bowl that they could drop some money in if they liked.

This is all from memory, I didn't take any notes. If I'd known I was going to have to give a book report I would have been better prepared. :grin:

You did good hubcap. Better than i would have. I really enjoyed hearing the speaker, and i think it is something that young and old could have benefited from hearing. So often we hear all the bad, and we heard good and bad from him. I enjoyed it.
