I just heard the bank (The First) on Hardy Street, which was robbed not too long ago, was just robbed again, and no one has been caught.

Reality, I drove past there just after it had happened. There were about 12 police cars on the scene.

could it be an inside job or just a lack of security?

My sources are saying it wasn't an inside job.

if it's not an inside job, what can possibly be the problem? You would think after being robbed so many times, the bank woud hire the best possible security. Then again, the HPD should be able to catch at least one of these bank robbers. I tell you; it's getting scarier and scarier to live in this city. You just never know what's going to happen next!

You would think since they have been robbed before, they would have hired more bank security or something. :smt102

where is this again?
Inside job? Please. Lack of security? They shouldn't have to be a fortress to be open. Wake up Hattiesburg. The problem is the criminal element in Hattiesburg know that because of their particular race, they can commit crimes and then complain to the mayor, chief, or fairley if they get caught and then the Men and Women that put their life on the line everyday are put on the hotseat for putting the cuffs on too tight. Before the election, someone wrote that that the mayor and the chief are enablers and thats just what they have done. Are they going to say that crime is down now? Please. Crime was never down. If you think that isn't true, just go to Radioshack and buy you a 800mhz scanner and just listen to how much crime is down. Isn't Jacksonburg great? Thanx dupree, wynn, and fairley.:smt119

Disregard for the law in general is up. It seems traffic violations have even gotten worse since the election. Speeding, aggression, passing in turn lanes, running stop signs and red lights - all seem to be more evident. Just try driving Hwy 11, W Pine, and Hall between 5:00P.M. and 6:00P.M. The traffic going into town is unbelievably bad. Of course, it's bad everywhere in town. We probably have around half the policemen we need for a town this size, and to make matters worse, an additional 5,000 - 8,000 young drivers will be arriving when USM starts Fall Semester.

Colleen Donanvan WDAM reports "Bank Robbery In BROAD DAYLIGHT.. okay so banks are open after dark?? just thought that was funny.. This is the third bank robbery in hattiesburg since april. No arrests in any of them. great southern. citizens, first national.
I bet the stats will not show this later in the year.. I was curious about the FBI.. Ive known in the past the FBI comes in and takes over the investigation of bank robberies. I have not heard any of this hapening on the last 3 bank robberies. I wonder if we are not reporting the crime stats then maybe no need to report the robberies. :smt070

I know this is a very serious matter, but it's almost becoming a joke. It seems like anybody can rob a bank in Hattiesburg and get away with it. Why work when you can just rob a bank? The HPD will never catch you. Folks, this is really hurting the image of our police department.

Well, the store I used to work at got robbed for about $2000 worth of products. The detective came by, got a fingerprint of the suspect, we sent him video footage of the robbery, we had a vehicle, and a shoe prints in the ground (which we matched up ourselves). After they left, we never got a call again, and never could get through to that detective after that. They've got robbed twice since then, both in "broad daylight" this time.

This really is sad...years ago my husband was the manager at Papa John's and was robbed (1994 or so). He gave a description of the guys but they had masks and not too much it seemed to go on. We moved shortly thereafter to Jackson(transfer to another store) and we learned later that they had arrested some in the case.
It seems as little as they had to go on with that case if they made an arrest then certainly with video and more information that they could find the robbers.
I was surprised to see the footage last night on wdam because i expected to see some surveillance of the suspect. Don't know who dropped the ball there but video a few hours after it happened would certainly be beneficial.

Hattiesburg police are still searching for the armed robber who held up a bank Monday.
He is described as a black man, standing 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10 and weighing 180 to 200 pounds. He was wearing a brown crewneck shirt, blue jeans, a black hat, and black sneakers.
Authorities say the robber walked into First National Bank near Southern Miss, demanded money, and ran away.
If you have any information, call Metro Crimestoppers at 601-582-STOP.

It won’t take long for the Chief, to catch up with these thieves,
He’s only playing opossum, and the Chief will not be deceived.
Thou shalt not steal, the good books says
It’s taking up the collection and raising tax, not crime that pays.
For some occupations, you need violence and not peace,
Else we might be tempted to forget, why we need the Police.
The real important criminals have been caught but won’t confess
What’s up, O.J., Michael Jackson, Koby and Scott Farris
But the Reverand says our priorities are confused, our goals misplaced,
A black man we are quick to accuse, when we point our finger in haste.
When a crime is committed, a black man is always the suspect.
If its up to you heathens, you’ll put Chief Wynn in the lineup next.

Did anyone else see the news where they've arrested a suspect? I can't remember his name...Eric somehthing but Wynn said he's confessed to robbing all three banks this year and a check cashing service.
He was caught when someone called in a tip of him going on a shopping spree...a little vague as to why they suspect it was him..not unless they were a witness or something like that.
I saw it on WDAM but notice their website news is not updated..didn't see it in the American.

I talked the officer who interviewed him. He was arrested at the food court at Tuttle Creek Mall with his family. It's really a sad situation. The guy had lost his job and they foreclosed on his house. He was desparate. I know its no excuse, but its kind of like the John Q. movie and I can't help but to feel something for people like that. Where are the Churches when people need help? The officer said a church is helping his family some now, but where were they before it got so desparate. I asked the officer how much time is he looking at, and he said around 15 years. Sad situation. No excuse for robbing a bank but sad.

Peoples, peoples, peoples. Wynn has been luke-warm @ best on the trail of the bank robbers for about a week now. Wynn is tired & needs a resting. The peoples of Hattiesburg need to realize that with all Wynn does he can't keep his eyes on every bank in the city. Theses robbers are probably halfway intelligent, so they have an advantage over Wynn. Try to understand that banks get robbed everyday and it's just a natural part of the inter-workings of scociety........Wynn is going to count his money now.

Sorry jmack, but that bank robber's actions were nothing like John Q. That movie was based on a life and death situation for John Q's son. Yeah, it's sad when anyone lose their job and their home, but this guy could have done other things - like get a job! I just don't feel soory for him or his pathetic actions.

I remember years ago when a Hattiesburg Police Officer (white), robbed a bank in Mobile, AL. Almost every police officer in the city went to court to speak up for him. They all said he was in hurting financially and needed money to support his family. I think he only got 2-3 years because everyone felt sorry for him. Now, these same officers and the public could care less about this guy or his family.
JB2379

But jmack, ypu have to realize that this guy has robbed three banks and a check-cashing business. Trust me - I sympathize for his family's financial situation, but that was still no reason for im to go around and rob all of these businesses. If you are hoping this guy gets a light prison sentence, then what kind of message will that send to the public? Then you would have people going around committing crimes because their family is going through financial difficulties. Then you would see crime really increase in the city. That's not what the citizens of Hattiesburg want.

This guy is a professional at beating the system...that is the bottom line. I am very familiar with him on a "professional" level. He is a smart eleck who looks for ways to beat the system, cheat people out of money, what ever he has to do. He doesn't work. He could get a job if he wanted. He is a very physically able person. He got fired from one of his last jobs for stealing from them. Don't feel sorry for him. I agree it is a sad situation for his little boy and girl, but they're probably better off. At least maybe they will learn some values he probably never would have taught them. Don't get me wrong, I think every child should have a father, but if your father is a professional cheat and liar then maybe you're better off without him in your everyday life. He has very little useful info to teach you. I wish I could go into more detail about how sorry of an individual Eric Allen is, but I''m not at liberty to do so here.

I had wondered about that...if he was really in need or if that was just a story for sympathy...it's sad to think the worse of someone.
Lynn
My first question is why would you be in the mall on a shopping spree if you are losing your house and can't support your family? This makes no sense at all! I also know these people and know both individuals are quite capable of holding down a job. Times get tough for everybody at sometime or another but we don't spout bible verses and then go rob banks. I get tired of people hiding behind a religious front when they are actually felonious criminals. I know It's not up to me to judge people-but-sometimes it is hard not to judge them when they commit acts like this leaving me to help raise their family. This is where a lot of my tax money is going and it is not fair! By the way, the officer who robbed the bank in Alabamas name is Don and I know for a fact that he was having problems not only with his childs medical problems but he was also having problems dealing with having to take someones life while on duty. This must have been very stressful even though the majority of people realized he saved countless lives that night by taking the action he did. I seen him at a U.S.M. game a couple of years ago and he is doing good now. His was an entirely different situation concerning the reasoning of bank robbery.
