Just finished reading a story in the HA about how some residents think the guy who was recently murdered in Hattiesburg was a victim of a hate-crime, because he was gay. If this was indeed a hate crime, could this signal the beginning of more hate crimes in our city in the near future?
Folks, it just seems like crime is definitely on the rise in our city. We are not use to stuff like this in Hattiesburg, and something needs to be done about it.

I didn't see any evidence pointing to that conclusion, nor did any residents have anything real that might suggest a hate crime. He was gay, so they are suggesting it's a hate crime. One thing that did strike me as odd though
While Mississippi lawmakers approved legislation in 1994 that imposes enhanced penalties for hate crimes, those must involve a person's race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, national origin or gender. The law does not cover sexual orientation.
I don't understand that, I thought these laws were made because of the crimes against gays in the 90's.
I thought so too, Aaron.
"While Mississippi lawmakers approved legislation in 1994 that imposes enhanced penalties for hate crimes, those must involve a person's race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, national origin or gender."
Are there hate crimes based on gender alone? Never heard of anyone being killed simply because of being male or female.

i really didn't think it was a hate crime. The two thugs that killed that guy seemed as if they could care less if he were gay or not.

You know one thing I hate about some of thes postings is that some of you are sooo freakin clueless.... you form opions about things that you have no understanding.
First, unless you gay . . . you have NO IDEA about this community or the members of it. #1 Unless you know Momma T . . . you don't know what may or may not have happened. Even those of us who knew "T" . . still don't understand what may or may not have happened. THE WORD hate crime really tick me off. If some one kills you thene its a hte crime REGARDLESS of who you sleep with.
As far as should this murder have something to do with "T" being gay . . . YOU BET! Everything "T" did revolved around him being gay... not that it is a bad thing . . . it's just the way he was... so unless you knew "T" WHICH BTW I DID! Don't presume... to know what happened...... those of us who knew Stuart . . . have thought all along that the murder had something to do with his being gay . . .Not because he was gay but because of the way he acted . . again I say this not as a bad thing . .. but that is just the way he was...... good or bad. I know from 1st hand experences what "T" was like socially and sometimes his actions really ticked me off . . . but as irritaed as I would get, NOTHING he did would justify what happened. He may have doen something to push the wrong buttons, (HE ALWAYS DID) and the guy just flipped out. SO, was it a hate crome YOU BET! (is there a crime that isn't) Was it because he was gay? YOU BET that's the was he openly lead his life and was flamboyant.
For those who don't know... H'burg has a very LARGE gay community both in lifestyle and economics . . . and the community has every right to be frightened... not just because of this murder but because the stigma that are attatched. SO please in this discussion understand . . that the murder did happen because he was gay. Because that is how he lead his life.... and knowing "t" he would want everyone to know it!

sorry we offended you Itzme, but how do you really know that the guy was killed because he was gay? Seems to me that you have formed your own opinion of the situation.
Can it be a hate crime if the thug doin the killin is gay too? I don't think so. Just because this idiot was hanging around a female doesn't mean he wasn't gay too.Shouldn't the focus be on why this a..hole killed the man and not what the man was doing to get killed? I say hangem at high noon on the court house steps.:smt070

You didn't offend me . . . and maybe I didn't explain myself . . so let me try again. EVERYTHING and I mean everything Stuart did revolved around his being gay! Good and bad . . .that was his life . . he always was oulling people into his way of life. NOT in a bad way (all the time) . .he breathed gay . . .everything was gay about him... Now let me explain , , he was proud of who he was. I am not saying this in a negitive way . . BUT understand I KNEW HIM... I know the way he acted as did many others....he attitude and actions supported his way of life.
Now understand I am talking about his was of life . .. NOT have sex.
Men and women who are that into the gay life tend to offend those who hate the lifestyle. But also those, who like "T", reach out to people to draw them in...
My point being, is that, the raits he had because of his being gay, lead to his death NO DOUBT! . .

I heard today that a realtor who owns a house on Southern Ave. went to check on it the night Milam was murdered, and the same night the guy in Petal was stabbed. The house was supposed to be vacant. He found the 2 suspects in the house (although he didn't know they were suspects at the time) and they had run an extension cord from the next door house. They were basically "squatting" in it.
The realtor called the cops to have the 2 arrested for trespassing, or anything else he could get them for. The police told him that they didn't have any room for them in the jail.
Don't know how reliable this is, but the guy telling it to me thought it was very reliable.
Wilebill, that could possibly be true for the female, but not the male. There is a Federal mandate imposed at the Regional Jail on how many misdemeanor inmates can be housed there and more often than not, the misdemeanor female population is at the maximum and they can only take felony and domestic violence females.

there was a man and woman begging money at wal-mart on 49 a few months back. later they were at the truck stop @49 and 59. hpd was called. hpd hauled the male for being a vagrant, but let the female stay free b/c there was no room at the jail for her. ps. they had been told on numurous occassions to move on, but they didn`t. about a week later, they were right back at the same wal-mart. what you gonna do when they come for you?(bad boys)

The HA reported earlier that the suspects knew the victmin. I just dont see this as a hate crime.. The suspects needed money and a car so they killed him. Looks like he had plenty of money. I just see it as a robbery for a vehicle and drug money.. I just wonder why it took nine days for someone to find him dead.
I would like to know why it took H.P.D. so long to air the picture of his vehicle. It was as if they knew for sure they (suspects) left town already. Got to give them credit though, they actually left town-most of them just go to mommas house. lol.

Why would the suspects still be in that vehicle after what 17 or 18 days..
