Decided to repost the favorite Hattiesburg radio station poll since the other one didn't survive the upgrade.

Sir Mickey Mouse

Listen to SuperTalk during the day when local folks or Dave Ramsey are on... other than that, Hattiesburg/Laurel lacks seriously in the radio industry for a market of this size. SL100 plays the same 6 or 7 songs over and over and over... I don't like country music, so that takes several options away... so

It's XM RADIO for me!!!!! I LOVE it... well worth the money. There are hundreds of channels... listened to The Weather Channel with the hurricane stuff and also to the BBC Radio Network during the London Bombings.

I voted for Supertalk, but I'm quite suprised that in South Mississippi, we have no country music lovers on here (or at least none enough to vote for Eagle 99 or B-95). I personally love the late 70s, early 80s era of country music, headlined by Johnny Lee, T.G. Shephard, Mickey Gilley and later the young George Strait and Alabama.

Alan Jackson and George Strait summed up what you are saying perfectly in their song "Murder on Music Row". My wife, who loathes much old country, hates the song.

I remember five or six years ago, before he died, Waylon Jennings said this of Shania Twain, "She's cute as a bug, but if her music is country, then I'm the King of Mongolia!"

I don't understand country music, it makes no sense to me.
The station the Reverand listens to, is always 106.3

I saw Don Williams at the State Fair when I was in law school. I've always loved his music, my favorite being "Good Ole Boys Like Me". He is not known for his stage presence however, other than sitting down, playing his guitars and singing his songs, he doesn't have much to say. I think he even made fun of himself for being that way during the show. Other than that joke, introducing his band, and saying "thank you, goodnight..etc" at the end, he hardly said anything.

I don't get listening to talk radio. If I wanted to listen to talk, all I have to do is call my wife.

lamarrebel
08-01-2005, 11:26 AM
I consider talk radio to be intellectually stimulating and thought provocative. My wife doesn't particularly like politics or follow it to the degree that I do, and I pretty much listen to nothing else during the day when I'm driving to court or on occasion when I am working in the office.

There is no question that talk radio has considerably shifted the political spectrum in this county, and it has been to the right. It has, in fact, been equal time, as Rush Limbaugh has called it, to the overwhelming liberal bias of the mainstream press.

Although some programs, like JT and Dave, tend to sensationalize issues, on the balance, talk radio is a good thing for the political debate, both in Mississippi and across America.

aaron
08-01-2005, 11:52 AM
The only media that I know of that doesn't sensationalize issues is the Hattiesburg American and WDAM. Everyone else makes their story look like the most important thing to watch, read, or listen to at that point and time.

wusmmik

I'd have to say we do not sensationalize the news..we just read it and try to gather as much as we can to get on the air.

I like good old country music too. I have about 300 old 45s I wish 99.3 could use for their station. There's a lot of good old songs they have never played. This was a tough poll cause I listen to 104 a lot too. Depending on my mood. :smt026

In the morning for me it's Supertalk...at night, it's Eagle 99. On weekends, occasionally it's 94.3 for the all 80s weekend.

09-07-2005, 04:17 PM
I agree with you Hub - the 80's weekend is pretty good stuff. I like B95 and Eagle 99 but usually the only time I listen to the radio is early in the a.m. while getting ready for work and I usually tune into 94.3 (Rick and Bubba????) or 97.3 or 93.7???? (it's programmed in I just press the button) The Walton and Johnson show. I live pretty close to work so don't really get much in the car then. A song or three! If I am in the car late afternoon I'll tune into 98.1 and listen to Sean Hannity.

I listen to 103.7 They play a good mix of classic and current rock and roll. I know a lot of people talk about XM radio, but I just don't see the point of paying for something that you can get for free. Yeah I know there are hundreds of channels. But I'd rather stick with those I know. 95.3 is great and 94.3 all 80s weekend is awesome. Although it seems that everytime I turn to that station I get Cyndi Lauper or Spandau Ballet. LOL

aaron
06-22-2006, 12:01 PM
I've had XM and wasn't impressed. I like 103.7 also and I don't think XM has anything comparable. I've heard the same comments from other people also.

in the mornings i listen to either the rick and bubba show on KZ94, but most everyday its Corey and Jay on 103.7. but after that...its XM radio for me as well. If the rock stations here in town would quit playing the same 5 or 6 songs it might would be better. A person can only hear "Born on the bayou", "beast of burden", "free bird" so many times before they become suicidal. This is a college town for petes sake, how about having a station thats a little more mainstream and one with a edge. At least with XM I have hundreds of channels to choose from, WITHOUT cheesy boring commercials, hear songs that ive never heard or havent heard in a long time. Well worth the 13 bux a month. Now of the on air personalities here in Hattiesburg, that guy Bob on KZ94 that does the spots in the breaks during Rick and Bubba....he drives me insane. I know that I cant be the only one. He must be getting paid by Aretha Franklin and Cher to play their music...because that seems like all he ever plays. Hey Bob, with all the jobs that you have....buy some new tunes and bring them to work once...it would be nice for a change.

I love my xm- I have had it for so long that I don't really listen to the radio stations anymore. I especially like that I get Fox news, CNN, BBC and sports (especially right now with the world cup going on) while I am on the road traveling. Also during the Hurricane there was a 24/7 emergency station that gave very good updates for our area.

I listen to either 97.3, 98.1 870AMor NPR depending on what time of day it is. Sometimes I'll switch over to 95.9 or 107.9 for a bit if I'm bored with the talk, which doesn't happen much. If I'm listening to music, it's usually some odd bit of music that no one's probably heard before... I like listening to traditional Russian folk songs or latin rap music. I wish that were a joke, but that's what I've got burned on my car cd's.

I voted for B95 because I'm defining "favorite" as "what I listen to" and frankly, they are my wake up station. Cannot wake up to talking, esp NPR, unless the liberal drivel gets too much, then I'm very awake and very annoyed, not good. Also cannot wake up to music I really like. I turn B95 off after the Pitts guy (who is a hoot.)
What I actually listen to is Classic FM from the UK, which I get on my computer, but it wasn't on the list. Gee.

As far as real country music goes, it's Jimmy Rodgers (T for Texas, T for Tennessee) Hank Snow, Eddie Arnold, Jim Reeves, et. al. Not strictly country, but I was brought up on a pretty steady diet of Sons of the Pioneers as well.

PS yes Kicker 108, you were there for me after the storm!!

I like a wide variety of music from the late 60's to current music. Hattiesburg just doesn't have many good stations to listen to. You have SL100, B95, Y104 and maybe a few others that are good. We need bigger and better stations for this area. We are the HUB!!!

I think country started going bad right before the 90's. To me, the 60's and 70's were prime for country and some of the 80's were pretty good. But I remember the good old days of listening to country on WFOR 1400 AM here in Hattiesburg. WBKH also played some good stuff. Real country just sounded better on an AM radio.....for some reason.

I enjoy both Rock 104 and B95 equally. Buddy Baron from the B95 morning show use to be part of the morning crew on the country station we listened to back home in San Francisco. I was shocked to hear him on the radio when we moved out here. I've had a couple of chances to shake his hand and chat with him and he seems like a really great guy.

Most of the stations you get on XM you CAN'T get for free! IMO XM is the best thing since sliced bread! I tune in on my puter, with my XM boombox and I have XM for my car. I get tired of the country music...I prefer the oldie moldies (50's & 60's)...it is nice to not have to listen to the cheezy commercials too! I don't ever want another car without XM unless they get something that is even better! Well worth the money as far as I am concerned!

Bumping old threads is a rules violation.

Read the rules a bit closer.

This rule also does not apply to threads used for a general topic (Grey's Anatomy, What's for Supper, The Thread about Beer, etc.)

I love XM! Their modern jazz and chill/downtempo channels are so good. No shortage of music genres and talk. I just switch around and listen to what appeals to me at the moment. Worth every penny and great while traveling. I do like the programming on WUSM and MPR locally. I also hate most of the modern country music today. The stuff from the 60s and early 70s was so much better. XM has a channel that covers that era too.

I usually listen to 104, just due to the time of day I am in my car. If I actually drove around during Hub City Blues hour, I'd be on WUSM. I hate morning radio, but find the 104 guys to be the most bearable, and need something a little more dynamic than the classical that wusm plays then. I'll run 94.3 during the weekend for the 80s thing occasionally. I actually preferred 95.3 out of the coast, as they played more cheesy 80s rock, but I haven't been able to pick them up for the last year or so, maybe they reduced their broadcasting power, I don't know. It seems like when I first moved down here in '02, there was a radio station that was all 50s and 60s music, I recall enjoying that... might be a figment of my imagination though.

LOL! Sometimes I listen to a BBC classical station on my computer at night! You'd feel right at home . . .

I have to wake up to something that wakes me up, so it has to be mildly grating. B95 -- though I enjoy the Top Five list and the Pitts guy "Wake up, Amurrica!" -- if I listened to anything too pleasant, I'd be right back asleep.

Since your all internet savvy, expand your musical horizons. Leave the 20yr old stuff they all play over and over and over and over and over. I'll bet you could correctly guess the artist on a particular station before tuning in. (and the one song of that artist that always get played.)

I find that music stations in our area are shall we say ... challenged.
Other than spot checks and lucking up on some things while driving, only Mississippi PBS is listened to. I like 98.1 FM but it is weak as water and I can only pick it up when in town. Neither the nice receivers at my house pick them up or in any of the vehicles.
SL 100 has been playing the same stuff since I was wearing Disco shirts or they fall back on the whiney useless to me muzak that really grates on my nerves.
104.5 FM would have to be the lesser of all evils I guess but that isn't saying much.

To be honest I can "feel" our local stations on me and other states have much better programming. That is really sad when you consider our musical heritage here.

It is true. There are really no words for how disgusted I am with some of the most recent county artists.

The example that comes to mind right off is the song "I Go Back" by Kenny Chesney. The song is about how different songs that Kenny has heard over the years evoke emotions and memories. The stupid part comes near the end when Kenny sings the lyric, "And I go back to the loss of a real good friend, and the sixteen summers I shared with him.
Now, 'Only The Good Die Young' stops me in my tracks." There is only one little problem with Kenny using this song to reference his dead buddy. Only the Good Die Young is a romance song written by Billy Joel, and it is about seducing a girl. The lyrics are implying that a chaste life is like being dead, essentially not worth living, and this is the argument that Joel uses to try to get his chick to give it up. Why would this make Chesney think about his male friend that is literally dead? Has Chesney ever even heard the song he is referencing?

Only The Good Die Young (Billy Joel)

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
aw But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one

well, They showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Aw, but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done.....
Only the good die young
thats what i said
only the good die young x2

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
aw But that never hurt no one

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
Darlin' only the good die young
(woah x5 )
i tell ya
only the good die young x2

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
mmmm, And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
(oh woah woah)

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
the Sinners are much more fun...

you know that only the good die young
oh woah baby
i tell ya
only the good die young, X2

You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aww She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah

Come out come out come out virgina dont let me wait,
You catholic girls start much too late
Sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one,
You know that only the good die young

i will say this again... as i think ive said it before... possibly in this very thread

the radio in hattiesburg is absolutely the worst radio you can get... the programming sucks... the dj's suck.... and after the few people in the few stations i know and the discussions with them... the owners suck

and it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt just an absolute collective failure of the entire radio media as a whole

but well keep listening cause weve got nothing else to listen to

and dont even get me started on the craptastic clear channel stations

i would pay twice what i pay to xm if i had to

I am still looking for a good station. Untill I moved here I have never heard so much AC/DC in my life. Do the local stations know what year it is?

I'm sure they do. What would you prefer?

SL100 = refuse to listen to it.

I scan alot and I hear Thunderstruck about 20 times a day.

What would I prefer? I don't know. Maybe just something modern.

Thunderstruck x_x

Myself, I'm not much into "modern" music.

I checked the USM station but I primarily listen to PRM at 90.3.

Very in depth coverage of stories normally missed by the traditional news media and music that has stood the test of time and popular whims.

We travel to the coast pretty regular to use the commissary and BX at both Keesler and the Navy base in Gulfport. We found a station from down there about 4 years ago, we can usually pick it up in the house and in the car here in Petal. But I myself have started to listen to it on the computer whenever I have the PC on. WMJY-FM, "Magic 93.7" is the station (www.magic937.com (http://www.magic937.com)). It plays a variety of music and may not be for everyone - but we have come to like it!

103.7 is about all I listen to. I cannot handle Rock104. It's the same 40 songs over and over again. I've always hated Fleetwood Mac and Rock 104 runs them into the ground. If you listen to them you'll notice they only play a couple of songs from performers that hand tons of songs. You could play anything from Led Zeppelin l-lV but they just play the same couple of songs. You'll never hear anything like Yes and very little from the Doors. I understand some of it is trying to play to as wide an audience as possible but a lot of it seems like laziness. Plus I don't know who you'd offend by playing more Pink Floyd and less crap at midnight hours.

103.7 was playing War Pigs today. Cranked it and freaked out my rap loving neighbor. I was kind of surprised they played it.

BTW-TK101 out of mobile is great. They are better than 103.7 but usually I can't pick it up till south of H'burg.

Me. Pink Floyd is absolutely terrible. (Now, say it with a Stephen A Smith voice): TERRIBLE.

when 103.7 first started... they did really well.... they didnt talk incessantly... they played a good mix of music.... but after that intro period... it was all over but the crime

they started playing nothing but a round the clock rotation of a douchebag DJ, AC/DC, led zepplin, and frikken ozzy...

now mind you... i enjoy all those bands... but not on a 24/7 rotation... especially from a modern rock station

the hattiesburg stations cant stay central to their core listeners... they try to branch out entirely too much in an attempt to play something for everyone... and a the end of the day... it fits no one...

except maybe zexxa

Local stations suck. We need Triad Broadcasting to come in with a mix of stations to compete with Clear Channel.
