Don't forget that we also have a CrackHead in our new exhibit.
The CrackHead is a nocturnal creature who can be very aggressive. By the time the CrackHead reaches adulthood he is usually a thin wild eyed deranged toothless creature that survives mainly on King Dongs and YooHoo’s. Please don’t feed the CrackHead.

Back to the original topic ...
Yep. There have been significant zoo improvements over the past few years. Better exhibit space, additional animals, improved landscaping, and odor control. All in all, a very pleasant spot. Admission is very inexpensive ... or even better, join the Hattiesburg Zoological Society and admission is included. All to help with zoo improvements.
And not just the zoo. The playground area has also been improved and now includes a handicap accessible play area called Adam's Place. I'm there a lot ... being towed by a couple of little ones. :-D

The zoo has improved greatly over the years! I remember those rides they had...nothing to be proud of...the quarter rides at Wal-Mart are on the same level. they at the zoo still have the train and a carousel correct?
I love the african veldt(sp), prairie dog exhibit and the area for the monkeys and the tiger are very nice...much different than when I was a kid and greatly improved upon.
The playground area is awesome.. a lot better than the old swings and slides they use to have...
and admission is very reasonable...$2 for adults? how much is the Jackson Zoo? When I was a kid it was like $4.00.
the gift shop is very nice too with it's place beside it for meetings...etc. At our church the seniors have a monthly social at the zoo and love it.

I know some of the folks who worked on the new and improved playground and yes, I would call it impressive...if you like that sort of thing.
By the way, the admission fee is for the zoo. You can enjoy the playground, picnic area, walking trail, etc. for nada.

DAVE, et al: There are 3 "levels" of "cuss" words: 1) Vulgarity--"mildest" (considered "crude" but non-sexual), 2) Obscenity--worse (crude with sexual content/conotation), and 3) Profanity--the worst, but fewest in number--only 4 or 5 words (with a [negative] "religious" conotation)...H-ll, along with d-mn, and various expressions of "taking the Lord's Name in vain" are indeed in the worst, most "offensive" 3rd category of profanity. (Although almost ironically in our present culture/society, several obscene and even vulgar expressions will commonly elicit greater shock/offense.)

I wasn't aware the topic of this thread, "Has Kamper Park improved over the years?" had changed to, "Insert your own beliefs irrelevant to this topic here." In the future, please keep your posts on topic, or start a new thread.... Thanks!
Oh, and though I don't agree with the admission charge, I have seen significant changes in the Zoo which lead me to believe that it is warranted for future growth. We're very fortunate to have such a facility in such a convenient location. Take a look at Mobile's Zoo. Can't find it? That's cause no one else down there knows where it is, either.

I should add that I am a bit confused over the Zoo's master plan (if there is one). I remember when the monkey exhibit on the east side of the park was new... a few of my friends in another boy scout troop have their name on a plaque attached to the outside of the exhibit in appreciation for their service in building it. Now, that ten year old exhibit it essentially abandoned. I hope their are plans to reuse the exhibit in the future; otherwise, it seems like a waste of funds.

Thanks for getting us back on topic SoMiss.
Kamper Park, and particularly the zoo has improved significantly over the last several years both in what the visitor sees and what he/she doesn't see. The zoo now has in-house medical facilities including a quarantine area for animals and thankfully the animal jails have been replaced with more suitable and more attractive natural environments.
I think that both former and current administrations should be commended for the work that has taken place there and the continuance towards realizing the finalization of the zoo's master plan.
The ultimate goal for the zoo is accreditation and I believe that they are well on their way towards that goal.

As a child, I remember the roller-coaster, feeding the ducks, and a stupid little canoe ride that floated around a tiny stream of water. And the train from Hercules, which by the way was filled with Asbestos in its boiler, which is why it was moved to the train station downtown. Oh, they had tanks too, but I don't know what happened to them.

A master plan does exist. I suggest that you stop by the zoo offices (located in the same building as the gift shop) and talk to Lori Banchero (the zoo's director) and ask to see a copy of the plan. I have no doubt that she would be happy to share the information with you.

That's the same train?! The same train I used to climb all over when I was a kiddie? I always wondered what happened to it. I remember the tank, and barely remember the coaster. Wasn't there some kind of rocket shaped slide? And I seem to remember another ride where you got into little cars and went in a circle. I think that ride had a roof on it.
I wish I could find pictures from back then.

Yup, same train downtown. I remember the ride with the cars. I got sick looking at it, so I didn't ever ride it. The canoe ride was behind it. I think I remember the slides to which you are referring. I wish I could find some pictures, too.

I have always found Lori to be an excellent source of information about the zoo. She is also very passionate about the facility.
Excellent point about the two zoos in Mississippi. Also, a comparison of what Jackson charges...not to mention the state of the neighborhood surrounding the Jackson Zoo. I think that we certainly have a facility to be proud of and it will continue to get better with time, and funding of course.

SoMissTV: With all due respect, I did indeed intend to place my post of "personal admonition" (not "personal attack") directed to "Hillary C" since her "rules" post appears about midway on page 2 of this thread (posted at 10:47PM 9 Aug.), so it is therefore not "off-topic" nor on the wrong thread (although I too regret the need for getting off on such "tangents" that have nothing to do with the original thread subject)...I too have fond memories of Kamper Park & Zoo (now Hattiesburg Zoo), including a very public "fight" over the fate of the UDC House and grounds in the early '90's. (The UDC originally owned ALL of the park and zoo from 1904 to at least 1990--and in fact technically still do!)
I'm also concerned with the progress/status of the "master plan" for the zoo which dates back some 20 years now...I'll likley contribute more comments/questions on this thread later...
SoMissTV
08-10-2005, 12:33 AM
I'm not sure I'm familiar with the UDC house... I would like it if you could tell me more about it. And I understand the urge to respond to someone who has posted off-topic here, but two wrongs don't make a right. Just because she posted off-topic here doesn't mean that it's right. Plus, having competing topics within a thread makes it harder to read and turns people off, and I'm sure Aaron does't want that.
Regardless, thanks for your understanding, and I look forward to hearing of your involvement with the zoo.

The "UDC" House--"The United Daughters of the Confederacy", similar to the DAR--the Daughters of the American Revolution, and like the SAR--Sons of the American Revolution, was/is the "ladies auxilary" to the SCV--the Sons of Confederate Veterans...All were founded in the 1800's as pro-American, patriotic, historic preservation, service organisations which 100 years ago had much larger, more influential, and more well-funded memberships than today...
Sawmill pioneer John Kamper donated the original 80 acres of cut-over pine forest in a perpetual deed to the ladies of the local H'burg chapter of the UDC in 1903 for development as a "park" (no zoo till '49), which was then almost 2 miles west of the city proper...The UDC House (located in the southeast corner of the property) and the Pavillion are the original and oldest structures on the site (although the UDC House was moved there, not built there)...Since about 1992, the UDC House (virtually a museum inside) has been somehow closed to the use of the public, including the the ladies of the UDC--who legally OWN the whole property! (Ask the prior and current City Hall administrations?)

I remember playing tennis at kamper park during my college years. The addition of the walking track, upgrades to the zoo, cleaning up of the picnic area and the improvements to the playground have been a positive spin for hattiesburg. The only thing I hated was when I was playing tennis and messed up a shot, those darn monkeys would start laughing at me. The improvements was one of the many benefits that came from the Morgan administration.

I guess the primary difference here is that the Tupelo Buffalo Park is privately owned while the Hattiesburg and Jackson Zoos are publicly owned.
I don't think that the objective with Kamper Park is growth in terms of square footage or acreage. In my opinion the objective is growth in terms of the quality and diversity of exhibits. You are correct that Kamper Park is landlocked.
Spreading a facility out over a wide expanse of land is not always the best way to 'improve' a facility. I am quite pleased with the efforts that have been made in recent years to grow the quality of the facility.

I do agree with Dave that the children's activities are great (nieces have loved zoo boo) but wish they had more events for adults...In all the years we've been in Hattiesburg I think I've been able to drag geezerjoe once maybe twice to the zoo.

As of at least 2002 they were still around and not at all shy about letting anyone know who makes the real decisions regarding the use of that land. They are very much alive and well.
When we were planning the playground improvements I had to go and present our project concept to them. They were very nice and very cordial but also very adament about being in the loop on development decisions within the park property.

He was standing in all his glory roaring in the dead center of the parking lot, between Miss Hatties cage and the sandy playground. About 40 yards from us and his cage behind him. We froze in our tracts and slowly backed up. Like we did when faced with a mean dog in the alley. A zoo worker got a big piece of bloody meat, waved it at him and he went back and jumped in his cage and had a nice extra meal for his trouble. You could hear him and the peacocks from the saftey of my bedroom. Years later in the countryside of Thailand with a group of folks we heard this stange sound, someone said what in the heck is that, to which i replied quickly with a smile and the memory of my youth still fresh on my brain, thats a "peacock". It is quite an education growing up near a zoo.
We played ping-pong on the many concrete tables, we fished for catfish and what we called silversides in the pond. We baited our hooks with sunbeam bread rolled into small balls. The pond was this filthy yet beautiful emeral green. And as we fished you could hear the sounds of the elephant, the loin, the peacocks and most of all the screaming monkeys doing what monkeys do. The animal cages surrounded the pond on three sides so everything was right there. It was like being at a watering hole in Africa. Well at least to us kids. There was a huge alligator pit near hardy street, but in the many years that i visited the zoo i saw them move only on rare occasions. But it was always scary when they did.
We always wanted to somehow free the "dingo". Yes the zoo had a dingo, that just paced up and down all day taking time out only to wolf down whatever it was they fed him. And i cant leave without mentioning "old bubble gum butt" the huge baboon, that smoked and ate cigerettes, and would lure you close to the cage to throw feces on you. We never did like that baboon. Although he frightened us more then death itself.
There was also the "high slide" which was about as dangerous as anything you could find. It must have been 15 feet high and just wide enough to squeeze in, and if that was not scary enough it had two big bumps in it. And it was not uncommon to go sailing off into the unknown. Finally it was removed after a girl broke her leg.
There was an annual easter egg hunt the Loin's Club held for all the kids who wanted to come. And if you found a gold or silver egg you got a prize, usually a huge easter basket full of candy. It was a mad, mad, dash for eggs, so many kids.
Well thanks for letting me take this trip down memory lane, brings back great memory's. And thanks to Mr. Kamper and the Daughters of the Confederacy for giving us kids such a wonderful place to enjoy.

And the Lions Club hunt lives on. Because Kamper Park is becoming short of open space, the hunt moved to Vernon Dahmer Park several years ago. It's still a special event.
Side note: The Hattiesburg Lions Club donated the first lion to the zoo. That might have been the one hanging out in the parking lot.

Hattiesburg History note: The common myth is that Adeline, Mamie and Corinne Streets were named for William and Hattie Hardy's daughters. Not true.
Mamie - John Kamper's daughter
Adeline - John Kamper's sister, Mrs. Adeline Kamper Buschman
Don't know about Corinne
