Mississippi @ Vandy 1130 Saturday 9/17
Michigan State @ Notre Dame 230 Saturday 9/17
Tennesse @ Florida 700 saturday 9/17
New Orleans Saints @ New York Giants 630 9/19

lylabean will be choosing 4 games also. odds will be set by Danny Sheridan USATODAY

I hope this makes sense. The point spread determines the winner so if you take a team plus 3 1/2 points just add them to the final score. I hope most of you know about the spread. If you bet 50 hubdollars you will win 50 hub dollars. Im going to play around with it let me know your feedback. by PM.. The bets will close on saturday morning at 10 am 09/17..

Just picking the winner to me is to easy. Example Usm plays mcnesse state this weekend I would think along with everyone else in america Usm Will Win. But with a point spread its more difficult..

"To cover" is the same as "to win", right?

to cover--a point spread win.

Other terms here. (http://www.sportbookonlinegambling.com/betting.html)

The way it's worded, Vandy to win by 5 1/2 points, Mississippi to cover by 5 1/2...do these mean the same thing? Sorry to be so dense...:smt102

If I'm understanding correctly, Vandy is the favorite to win by 5 1/2 points so even if MS wins the game they must win by more than 5 1/2 points to beat the spread?

I found a thread (http://www.sports-boards.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12326) on another board that has a football game listed from last year. It may help to see how it was settled and done. It helped me.

yes, if Vandy is supposed to win by 5 1/2 points, then at the end of the game, you subtract that score from Vandy's to get the winner. I know there is no 1/2 points in football, but I'm guessing that prevents a tie. I have no idea who wins if you subtract the score and it is a tie.

Btw, why isn't the USM game up there?

Help me out here, Aaron. I understand the point-spread part. What's confusing me is the different wording.

"Vandy to win by 5 1/2 points", "Mississippi to cover by 5 1/2"

Do these mean the same?

You got me there, I'm learning about this just like you are. I don't know why noway worded them differently. I'm thinking they are the same, but I'm not sure.

Like noway said, we decided to do it this way for games that might be blowouts like USM vs. McNeese State. In a situation like that, everyone could bet on USM and double their money. With USM having to cover the spread though, it makes it a bit more tricky.

lol Nice to know I'm not the only one! Noway'll show up later and clear it up (hopefully).

Although Vandy pulled off a nice win last week at Arkansas, I believe it is utter disrepect to Ole Miss (not "Mississippi") to EVER be the underdog against Vandy. Vandy plays us tough, but the Rebs almost always come out on top. This year will be no different.

Ok, I get it now that I've looked at the games again after what hub said. To cover means the losing team will not lose by that amount of points. There are actually 3 games posted up there.

:lightbulb The light just flickered on! lol

Each game is listed twice; Vandy vs. Ole Miss...Vandy to win by 5 1/2 OR Ole Miss to cover + 5 1/2 (either win, or lose by less than 5 1/2)

Am I geting it right now? :bash:

yep, I think so.

Michigan State @ Notre Dame 230 Saturday 9/17

New Orleans Saints @ New York Giants 630 9/19

when starting the thread if you have 4 games you need 8 polls(make sense) ole miss win vandy win (see 2 polls)...

Vandy -5 1/2
ole miss

Final Score vandy 24 ole miss 17 if you picked vandy you won.. beacuse vandy won by 7 points. (more than 5 1/2)

Now the big question is will vbookie reconize this :smt102

usm game no line or spread I can find. Beacuse of who they are playing..

Maybe lylabean could post it with her own point spread...

I have almost 7000 hub dollars and I could let it all ride on usm :D

You have to settle the bet for it to recognize it, but the way you have it set up, you may have to wait till the last game is over to settle all bets.

I can't find anything for USM either. Maybe the American will have it in Friday's or Saturday's paper.

noway

they prolly wont have a line (HA) now the local "bookies" will have one. I would think the spread would be around 14 or so

Isn't this the reason for the point spread to keep people from doubling their hub dollars too easily? ;)

I have found a site that does predictions...looks like they update on wednesdays so hopefully I'll have my games posted today.

I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to the Saints...:-D heh...I almost had flashbacks to Jim Mora last night when I heard Jim Haslett talk about how they've moved from this stadium to that stadium, have lived in four hotels and now an apt since Katrina...but that really has nothing to do with the fact that they just plain sucked Sunday...hehehe :)
