I had to go to Pass Christian today to do some work, and I was not really prepared for what it was like there.
Pass Christian High School, about a mile from the beach, had 14' of water inside of it during the storm. The bottom floor was completely ruined and is covered by about 3" of the nastiest muck you'll ever see. Luckily, the second floor is about 15' feet high and is pretty much in perfect condition. The building itself, built in 1998, appeared to be structurally sound with very little structural damage, even to the roof.
Every building we saw in Pass Chrisitan was either damaged or destroyed. North of the RR tracks some buildings were standing, but most of those were heavily damaged. South of the RR tracks, there is basically nothing but piles of rubble. I only saw one building standing, but it was a total loss. The 3 story condos on the beach by People's Bank had the bottom 2 floors washed totally away, and the 3rd floor was heavily damaged. People's Bank was only a twisted pile of metal columns and beams.
The only way you could tell where you were is from people spray painting their address on the trees that were left standing in their lots. It looks like most of the big huge water oaks were still standing, but furniture and clothing were caught up in the branches.
Most of Pass Christian was totally destroyed. There was only piles of rubble left of what used to be houses. It's utter devastation. We here in Hattiesburg are much luckier than they are.
