View Full Version : Which Coaches Should be Fired at Season End?

Today James Bell, head football coach at Jackson State, was fired after going 8-23 over three years and clobbered by Arkansas Pine Bluff (who'd won one game all year prior to Saturday) by the score of 64-36. I'm not a JSU fan, but I do know JSU until very recently year in and year out challenged Southern and Grambling for the SWAC Title, and now is struggling to beat Prairie View. Bell was also 0-2 against Alcorn.
That being said, what other area college/pro coaches should be canned at the end of the year? This is a multiple choice poll so clicking by a coach's name you are saying "yes, fire him".

There was a photo in Sunday's C-L of the stadium of the JS game, and the few people who showed up. It said that the crowd was 2835, but from the looks of the photo, it was only about 500.

I wouldn't say Croom needs to be fired...I figured it'll take a few years to clean up the mess Sherrill left.
I also like Jim Haslett...I do think the Saints need to get out of New Orleans...they are cursed there.

I listed all four coaches out of fairness. If we were in Alabama, I would have listed Tommy Tuberville, even after his 13-0 season last year.
I'm not particularly sure any of them should be. Orgeron has done a great job in rebuilding Ole Miss's defense, which had been in a decade of decline since Joe Lee Dunn left. He still leaves a lot to be desired on offense though, but the culprits on the field are mostly Cutcliffe recruits. Mazzone should have never been brought back.
Croom needs more time....and he may well eventually turn State around. Bower, in spite of all of the obstacles, has accomplished a tremendous amount at USM.
Haslett, I think the spark he created at New Orleans has long since faded out, but it's hard to fire him after the adversity that the team has faced post-Katrina. In a way, you almost feel sorry for him every time the Saints blunder.

It's sad when Oak Grove games regularly draw double that crowd.

You would fire Tubberville? Auburn has a chance to play in the SEC championship. And as for Bower, USM has a very, very small athletic budget and is in a small town with little exposure yet the fans want a top 10 team every year. Its good to think big, but lets be realistic here.

No, JMack, I wouldn't fire Tuberville (well...as an Ole Miss fan I would, but that's another story), but I would list him as an option, that's all I'm saying.

I am not a diehard Jeff Bower fan but he has provided a winning season in spite of the size of his budget. Most of the talent in this state have dreams of playing for Alabama, Ole Miss and State because of the ties with the SEC. USM has also had success having players drafted and making an impact in the NFL so it shows that the coaches can still find the needle in the haystack. I just wish Bower would bring in an offensive coordinator and let him do his job. One other fault Bower has is when he disagrees with a call, instead of yelling at the official for the next 4 plays, voice his arguement and get back to coaching.

yeah, i agree that Bower has probably been the best collegiate football coach in the state of Mississippi for the past decade, but I think we can do a heck of a lot beeter if we got a new coach in here. Bower has gotten too comfortable with the typical 7 or 8 win season, which is pretty decent. But he has also gotten comforable with losing nonconference games every year to big-name teams like Alabama. If Southern Miss is to ever get over that hump to become a national power, Bower's progress really needs to be evaluated at the end of the season.

I think winning 7 - 8 games is better than 80% of Division I teams.

I agree jmack, but you have to realize that those or 8 wins are usually against weak Division 1 teams and ocassionally a division 2 school

IMO, anyone who would coach for Ole Miss should be fired. :smt070

USM is a weak team too. I'm not trying to be funny or trying to put the program down but we are not and have never been one of the top teams in the country.

Wynn thinks every coach should "go".......@ least once or twice a day. If you're having troubles "going", then maybe youu should see a Dr.....or eat @ La Fiesta.....or get a coathanger.......:smt118 :smt103 :smt119 ;)

im the none/other... Jeff Bower maybe he should but like other people have said until we get the money and the facilities we cant expect more than what we are getting. also usm needs to get out of C-USA..
Jim Haslett look coach in his shoes this year and see how many you win. Give the saints two breaks and three more plays and they would be 5-2 IMO. Tom Benson needs to be the one to go.. Leave the saints in New orleans

Did ya'll see Benson shoving the cameraman Sunday? I think it'd be best if Benson sold the Saints....his time has passed.
