Aw..thanks. I really appreciate that. I'm glad you guys like my reviews. I've finally found a home for them. After days of searching for scary movies on TV for Halloween, I figure it's time to move ahead and begin the forecasting for Oscar season.
My crystal ball tells me, that "Jarhead" is easily a frontrunner. With the pedigree (Sam Mendes of "American Beauty", directing; last year's winner Jamie Foxx in support) and the content..we are talking serious Oscar buzz for these crewcuts.
I agree the preview is stunning, the drama it creates (with help from that stirring placement of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks") trumps this season of "Over There" on FX. But, why would a movie with this automatic interest (therefore, bankability) be released on the first Friday in November.
To capitalize on Veterans Day, November 11th? Sure.
But, honestly, movies that are released in early November are usually those
the studios don't think will be around for the holiday..think logically about it before you go calling me a charlatan. Universal's upcoming releases are King Kong (Dec.14th) and The Producers (Dec.16th) as well as Spielberg's Munich (around Christmas). Now, wait before screaming "heathen"..and they are putting their movie up against Disney's "Chicken Little".
Good news, "Chicken Little" doesn't really look that good folks. It looks like Disney is trying to create its own Pixar-like success..and that sounds like another Eisner-era manufactured mistake. Bad news, while there's a lot of interest in "Jarhead"...if the studio really thought it was an award-worthy film...I just don't see them releasing it this early. So, I predict that many of us will enjoy "Jarhead"..but something tells me that it won't quite be the success expected.
If I'm wrong, well I guess I'll eat my ones and zeroes..but then again, I really have liked the last batch of serious war films..Starting with "Saving Private Ryan", followed by the vastly underrated "Three Kings" and then the riveting "Black Hawk Down".

Actually, that's all speculation folks..I can't really critique it until I see it..
the hard part is avoiding all of the early reviews and their spoilers..but, then again this is coming from a book that many of you have already read.
I can't wait for your critiques..I'm guessing they'll start pouring in on Friday.
Thanks again, noway

I am really looking forward to seeing this movie. I read the book but its been a while...I mostly remember a really depressed feeling with a bit of dark humor. In fact my brother in law, who i trade books back and forth with told me he didnt want it back because it was too depressing. I really think this movie will be great and i hope the emotion translates to the screen. I am not saying to expect a really grim sad depressing look at a war but that you should understand that you will be seeing one young mans view of Desert Storm.
Also looking forward to the new theater.

aw..now, don't hold that against me. That movie was brilliant.
I was just blown away by how bleached out the cinematography was
and how it was just utter chaos. I'm proud to say I've seen all of David O.Russell's films and he continues to function outside of the auteur class (Tarantino, for example) and the old reliable guard (start with Spielberg, then work your way down). His films are all brilliant exercises in high-wire comedy.
"Flirting With Disaster" is a laugh riot, it practically predates the uncomfortable comedy of "The Office" and shows of that ilk. And, if you haven't seen "I Heart Huckabees", run to get it. It is comedy about philosophy...and I laughed my ass off at it..."have you transcended space and time..."..sorry..
Now, "Three Kings" may be politically unappealing but you have to admit that it's just as kinetic as "Black Hawk Down" and while it is graphically violence, it's really a black war comedy in the vein of "Dr.Strangelove".

I  Huckabees was great. Very funny

I just don't like George Clooney. I watched the movie anyway in spite of him, but I just couldn't get into it. And maybe the violence just seemed too gratuitous, I don't know.

Yeah, that too. I think I cribbed that from some Sinatra biography or something..I just like that word for him it fits. Understand, I thought Clooney was way too into himself..and then "Three Kings" and his comedic performance in "O Brother Where Art Thou" changed my mind. He's been in some bad movies..but he's obviously very smart (check his direction of "Confessions of A Dangerous Mind" and another film on my wishlist to see "Good Night and Good Luck")..but smug too. Although, that may have changed this year with his bad injury. He looks rough in the previews for "Syriana"
Speaking of "O Brother", the excellent Roger Deakins is the cinematographer on "Jarhead"..so it's sure to be a thing of beauty. Everything he films is absolutely gorgeous.

Aww man, I'm sorry to hear that HubLady. Are you feeling any better now? I hope so!
By the way, depending on how old your kids are, you may want to think twice before taking them to see the movie. It's very explicit sexually. Just a little food for thought. :)
