If anyone has been following, she's trying to quit smoking. Help out by encouraging her in the comments. :smt070:smt028

I have a confession, Aaron said let's encourage "him (JMB) to quit smoking" -- All this time, JMB, I thought you were a woman. Sorry, my mis-assumption. You know what they say when you assume something.....

Ummm...I thought jmb was a woman too...could have sworn that she said something about when her husband comes home.

Regardless...jmb you're a non-smoker now!!! Part of the struggle is identification. Keep thinking of yourself as a NON SMOKER!

I have to laugh...I am 100% female. Leave it to the male to get it wrong! lol But that's okay...Aaron, I appreciate this anyway. :)

As long as I keep busy, it's not too bad. Tuesday and Wednesday I cheated a couple of times both days, and felt guilty each time. Today I did much better. Although I whacked the hell out of the trees I trimmed. Hey, anything to distract me works.

Last year, I lost my father to lung cancer and my mother to a stroke, and ever since then, I've been thinking about it off and on, and it just hit me this week that I had to do it. Plus I hear it helps on not wrinkling as bad. lol Gotta have a bit of vanity about it.

I didn't say anything to my husband about it until today. Thought I'd better warn him since he'll be home tomorrow. Poor guy.

Food is my other vice; I love to eat, and have a feeling I'll be doing a lot more of it, at least in the beginning. Thank goodness I'm hyper enough that I shouldn't have to worry about gaining weight. Once winter sets in though, it's going to be a bit harder to work off all those extra calories. Aaron, any idea how many calories we burn posting?

Thanks for you kind words of support. It means a lot to me. :)

And I knew that from other posts, but my initial impression when you first joined the forums was you were a male and when I am just typing without thinking, then I sometimes do things like that. I had to get to the workout center before it closed and made a rush post. Sorry.

well i smoke, i know i shouldn`t do it b/c of it affects on the ole bod. but i`ve just about given up everything i liked to do. one was drinking. that was very hard to do. i do have one now and then, but not like i used to. smoking i think is a state of mind. if you don`t really want to quit, you never will and all the help products in the world won`t help. i don`t want to quit so therefore i still smoke. jb, i wish you all the luck in the world. you are doing the right thing for yourself and everyone around you. i know you can do it. wonder why i don`t take my own advice, man it sounds so good. guess i`m just stupid. may the force be with you.

Thanks, ynot and Hawk. The hardest time of day for me is mornings, especially with that first cup of coffee. The rest of the time it isn't easy, but as long as I keep busy, it's not terribly bad. My husband is a smoker but he's usually home only on the weekends. Hawk, I don't think I want to try snuff! That's just plain nasty, even nastier than cigarettes. If I can quit, anybody can. You just have to get in the right frame of mind. And have plenty of food around. lol

Dead on, fuzzis. JMB, it's mind over matter. The addiction is over in about three days. So what you have left is the habit. I quit after 39 years. Just put 'um down. I started with a trip to the doctor's office. He put me on Wellbutrin. It's an anti anxiety and it has the same stuff in it that the patch et. al has. I took that for two weeks then pictured myself as a non smoker. The brain believes anything you tell it. If it believes you're a non smoker it won't behave like a smoker. When you do have the urges, take a walk, do anything to take your mind off the cigarette. I.E. get busy. I cannot tell you how proud I am of myself for quiting. You will be too, non smoker. :smt038

Good luck! Just keep reminding yourself what a healthy decision you're making. I've seen the lungs of a lifetime smoker up close, and not only are they scary, you know that person had a lot of difficulty later in life because of all the black crap clogging things up.

Smoking is just one form of addiction. Like dolfus said, replace it with another one. When you get an urge for a smoke, exercise instead, or play a game, or work on a project. That's probably going to be harder than getting over the physical addiction - just getting used to the mental addiction.

Wait til the smoking ban takes effect, then just hang out in bars all day.

I think the best way is to limit yourself to maybe 5 a day.
The following week cut back to 2 or 3 a day. Eventually it will be much eaiser to stop if you cut back a little at a time to give your body a chance to adjust.
