Did anyone see this? I'm not a very astute movie reviewer as I'm not a big movie fan. I should be able to talk about movies intelligently as I took a couple of film as literature courses, but I tend to just watch and not pay a lot of attention.
A friend and I went ot the Grand Tuesday night to see this. What a beautiful, timely movie. The movie opens with Murrow giving a speech that is hauntingly similar to many of the criticisms of the media that have been sounded in the recent (very recent) past. What is the role of media and television news? What are newscasters supposed to be reporting, what function do they serve?
Beyond that, the parallels between the McCarthy era and today...questioning McCarthy got you called a communist, in some circles questioning the President's agenda gets you called unpatriotic or terrorist sympathesizers...were well-drawn.
Those things aside, the movie really was riveting. When Murrow made the decision to go after McCarthy and as the show on Radulovich aired, my heart was pounding. It was like I was right there, in on the decision, awaiting the fall-out, and when they show the scene in the bar, after the editorials have come oout, I was relieved and felt like I could stop holding my breath.
The entire film was like that...a very emotional experience as I was watching it.
