I have been reading up tonight on the history of this case. I was suprised this topic wasn't brought up on myhattiesburg. Still alot of more reading to do on the case. I went on a tour of parchman with a group of high school students last year and remember seeing the different units at parchman along with the deathrow unit. It was very interesting on the tour and meeting the different inmates and hearing the different stories. I will never forget one of the guards telling us.. "Parchman has a place for everyone young, old, handicap, big & small. The students left parchman that day with a different attitude.. I have followed a few cases from forrest county that have inmates on deathrow. I wonder what is going through their minds on a day of execution. The weather today and lockdown of parchman. Im kinda rambling on but this story along with how the inmates prepare for a day like this.

This is strange

A third son, Charles Lee Nixon, 37, of Davenport, Iowa, was found dead near Mount Vernon, Ill., on Nov. 26. His death was ruled a homicide.

Yeah, Nixon went out like a punk, blaming one of his sons for the murder. What does he think that's going to get him, blaming his son? I almost felt sorry for a 77 year old man (who really should have been executed 20 years ago) until he said that. What a loser, he couldn't even muster up a heart attack in 20 years.

I agree that Nixon was pathetic; a waste of good air. It's a shame that it took so long for him to get what he deserved. I'm glad that the victim's husband was able to be a witness to the execution.

I looked up the ex-husband on the MDOC website; he looks like a real winner too. Not that it matters, but what was his motive for hiring the hit man - was he jealous that the lady had remarried or maybe he just didn't want to pay alimony? Just wondering.

I guess I will never cease to be amazed at what people will do for money.

once again, I must quote that certain chancellor of ours whom I'm often criticize...if Nixon wished to see the root of his problems, all he needed to was find the nearest mirror, stand squarely before it, and face it. Blaming anyone else, let alone one of his sons, is beyond pathetic.

Doc, I could be wrong, but I think that the only legal method of execution in MS is gas; no hangings anymore.

I have heard the older folk say that MS used to have a portable electric chair that was transported in a large truck; it would travel around and get business done.

Those were the good ol' days.

I was a little boy of about 5 years old when "Ole Sparky" was hauled into Hattiesburg on an open flatbed truck to execute a guy named "Wheeler" who was convicted for the shooting deaths of HPD officers Vincent and Everett for which the police station is named. When they flipped the switch on "Sparky", it dimmed all the lights in Hattiesbuuuuurg.
Hawkeye ... I remember the event very clearly. I lived about a block from the Court House and it was quite a happening. Brought out all kind of folks, as I recall.
