Brotha wilebill,
This story says only one miner was found alive. What is the fate of the others? I guess time will tell.

I feel so sorry for the families of those that died. I went to bed thinking they'd been rescued because of what was being reported on CNN, then woke up in the middle of the night to hear that the reports were wrong, that 12 were dead and only 1 survived.

That poor, poor community. I cannot imagine how angry they are right now.

The media fumbled this one....USA Today's cover this morning also reported that 12 of 13 were found alive. Apparently, a reporter overhead a conversation from rescue workers and misunderstood the fate of the mine workers. This is an awful tragegy for the families and all concerned.

No, the story was miscommunicated from mine officials, the media reported what they were told/heard. The families were told that 12 survived, then 3 hours later were told the grim truth. I don't see how the media fumbled this when they reported what the families were told.

Watching the Today show this morning (off and on) I don't think they were clear on exactly what happened...Does anyone else have any new info???

From what I've seen today, the mining rescue team just got the communication screwed. They were using taps to communicate with the ground, and the ground thought they said 12 of 13 alive.

I belive that no reports should have been made to the family or the media until eyes were laid upon the survivors or the deceased. These family members spent days with a hope that thier loved ones were alive, they were told that they were- became overwhelmed with feelings of thankfulness and had the belief that their prayers had been answered, just to find out that someone got it wrong. I would be furious. The days they spent hoping and praying, kind of helped them begin the greiving process, then all of that "prep" was taken away when they were given false news. I bet when they were told that their family members were in fact dead, it was the kind of shock for them all over again like when they found out their loved one was in an accident. This is absolutely horrible.

I agree justme! It's absolutely ridiculous that they told the family members, and then had to say no, that was wrong. If my family member had died, I would be furious. I'm sure that the company will be hearing from those families for awhile to come.

I heard on the news this AM ( how correct this is- who knows) that the company has started a fund for the famlies with seed money of 2 million dollars. That is 2 million divided by 12. I am no math wiz, but that is only 166,666 per family. My loved ones are worth more than that, and so is my emotional distress. You guys know that I am a lawyer, and I traditionally do defense work, but this is tragic and I see the offering made by the company as a preventative measure, in an attmept to avoid litigation. This small amount per family is a slap in the face and is an insult.
