This year's session is well underway and there is already a large number of bills introduced. This session should make for some interesting discussions here. I would encourage everyone to take time to peruse the slate of proposed laws...some very serious and necessary, others seem a supreme waste of time (but then again this is government we are talking about). You can check the status of bills at: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2006/html/mainmenu.htm
I see several on here already that are worthy of a call or e-mail to our local delegation both pro and con.

Exactly Hawk and I have to admit that last night I really did no more than scan the titles. Early in the session is typically not really a good time to start making predictions about what will pass and what will fall away as fluff. As you probably noticed, there was much repetition. Typically by the second month of the session most of those are consolidated into single bills for consideration.
I will take the time over the next couple of weeks to provide a "must watch" list based on things that I am hearing out there.
My main point of the thread was to illustrate the fact that their activities are open for our viewing and we have a responsibility as citizens of the state to monitor their activities and educate ourselves on what is going on in the capitol.

Dear Honorable Brotha Tully,
It is quite refreshin' to see yo pulitical prowess at its best with this massive list of proposals fo us Ferum viewa's to haves access due to yo diligence and hard work. Like Hawk and the Honorable Sistah Queen Mother, I too will be on the look out fo yo Top 10 picks, as that list is quite massive, and my time has been quite occupied with my intenchuns to make a run fo the Presidency.
And I agrees that the Public need to participate in exacisin' they rights to vote, as shown by efforts of the good Revran Farlee to get the Revran Maya Johnnie Duprees re-elected this past election by providin' his church memba's free transportation to the polls from Mt Cara-mel Babtist Church.
God Bless America...

Here is a fun one for starters
HB 74 (http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2006/html/HB/0001-0099/HB0074IN.htm)
"An act to designtate Montgomery County Arts Council's 'Hill Fire' as the folk play of the State of Mississippi, and for related purposes."
I can only imagine the riveting discussions going on in the Capitol over this one. :smt119

Just in case anyone wants to learn about Hill Fire. I can certainly see why the legislature would want to take up a bill to make this Mississippi's folk play - every state needs its own folk play! And, hopefully we'll have one soon!
I can understand your point. My point in making light of this particular bill to to illustrate that our legislators are spending time on some relatively petty issues when part of our state are in dire straits because of the Hurricane. As important as I believe the arts are to the culture of our state I think these discussions should take a back seat to the recovery and restoration of the coast.

Sure, the arts are important, but does any state need an official state play? What's next? Even without Katrina, I think there are more important things to spend their time on.

It's great to know they can still concentrate on the important things and not get sidetracked by things like Katrina, the economy, the budget, education, and those other trivial matters.

But it's bills like this they can all agree on and pass...then show how many bills they passed and that they did actually accomplish something.
