Dear Endurin' Pine Belt Citizenry,
I see that ol Mayor Carl has made the call to pull the Petal Fire Dept from the Dump Fire Fiasco created by the Army Corp of Engineers and contractor AshBritt. No sense wastin' the city of Petal taxpayer money anymore.
Good Call for the honest taxpayers of Petal...
I see that FEMA claims to have the fire halfway contained, maybe the residents will be able to venture outside without thinkin' they livin' in Los Angeles or West Texas.

Given the recent criticism that has been directed at the Mayor and Board he really does have more saavy than most people give him credit for. In fact, I have gone as far as to say that compared to other governing bodies in the region, Petal right now has the most progressive and forward thinking elected officials.

Yes Indeed Brotha Tully,
While obviously, the city cannot be run like a corporation, he seems to have the City's best interests in mind. With the recent water/sewer bill hike fiasco to fund future city works projects, he struck quite a nerve with many on fixed incomes. Our bill almost tripled, as did my wifes bill at her local business.
However, he did quickly rescind that hike after much scrutiny and criticism.
He does seem to be goin' in a positive direction though..

My mother Hates him, but I agree that I think he is headed in the right direction. He did mess up right out of the shoot raising the water rates, etc. without so much as any discussion with the residents to see what else might be done. My mom says that he doesn't look like he's bathed in a week, he looks wild, and he doesn't look like you could talk to him one-on-one. I told her I agree that he looks a little wild and that I don't think he's a "people" person, but I said that at least you know where he stands on issues. He doesn't mince his feelings. I hadn't thought about the dump issue being the Corp of Engineers problem, but once I saw his interview stating it was the Corp's problem and Ashbritt's problem and they could deal with it, I totally agreed with him, and I give kudos to him for that. Why should our firemen be busting their butts overseeing controlling that fire when it is the Corp's responsibility? Also, if there were a major fire in Petal and our firemen were tied up with that fire, how would they be able to properly respond and handle any other fires?

I also told my mom that it remains to be seen how Mayor Carl will handle future issues, but that at least we will know his views on matters and won't be worried about him talking out both sides of his mouth like previous officials have done. He gets a Thumbs Up from me on this issue!

I am not sure if it is the debris pile out there or what, but there are always fire trucks going down my street. I have been checking the community diary and there are not just a ton of burned down houses around town. Each day it seems like a fire truck goes down my street about 2-3 times a night. It is now like the trains downtown... Just part of the ambiance!

Participants in an internet forum at myhattiesburg.com posted several favorable comments in regard to scott's handling of the situation.

Well, Rev, certainly it wouldn't be U needing spell check, huh??!!! :p

Yes, we have now arrived folks...

BTW, I went to the Independent office yesterday and got my copy of the Katrina book and talked with Jason Niblett, a writer for the Independent who sold the book to me and was telling him about the myhattiesburg website and about some of our discussions. He said that several people had been talking about our website, and I told him that's where I learned about the Independent and that I went on their website occasionally to look at articles discussed here on this site. He said that was really neat, and I told him it was really a nice place to come and talk with others from this area and cut up a little bit at times and also to discuss more serious matters. I told him we had lots of discussions about the Hattiesburg City officials, i.e., Mayor, Dupree, Chief of Police and others and some of the current problems. He said that if we heard of anyone who might be interested in giving him more insight into what's going on regarding some of those issues, to give him a call. He said that they hadn't been able to get anyone to talk to them.

Believe me, if Mayor Carl was a member here, we would surely know it. He doesn't seem to hold back much of what he thinks!

Rev, keep on keepin' it real!! Love it! :smt038

And Tully, sorry, but I think I have to agree with Wilebill about ur pic and Mayor Carl..... :smt102

Wonder if Carl will ever pull the FD out and tell them not to put out a fire for some resident he dont like? Sorry folks, if its in the city, its the citys responsibility. Any resident of that area that has COPD problems that were irrated by the smoke, should send Dictator Carl a bill if they went to the hospital.

As a life-long resident of Petal, he is an embarrasment to me. He is 'pulling out of" the Emergency Management District. Petal has never paid a cent to the district, you can say, oh yea we do the county pays, Hattiesburg pays, so what makes Petal different? This is supposed to be a weak Mayor form of Government in this town, with a strong Board of Aldermen but he has turned it around, he says jump and at least 4 of the 5 say ask how high.

Time for a California Recall here folks!

Mr Moore and his cry to do business in Petal, bet they would block anyone who tried to put a bike shop in Petal. He wants folks to do businees here, wonder if he will move his business across the river. Probably will open a new shop, after he gets our tax dollars to build his bike trail along that old ditch!

RevranAL

Dear Honorable Fire Extinguisher,

While it is obvious you brings up many interest'n poirnts, and towards Botha Carl you shows extreme ill will

Had that Dump been put out in the County, not wastin' tax money and mens lives at stake, would have been a better deal

Now every great leader faces adversity in politics, fo this happens time and time again

So Brotha Carl jus show'n political saavy by weakenin' the board, and surroundin' himself with "Yes Men"

Now whats all this with Mr. Moore, I've bought bikes from him before, but really don't know this issue that well

But the old RR bed sho has done wonders fo Hattiesbuuurg, Probably wouldn't hurt to turn that ol' ditch into a bikin' trail

Is that the dude that is always riding that big wheel bike? Maybe he can donate a few of those mountain bike's to the Petal Police department for downtown patrol with the high cost of gas.

Fire Extinguisher
01-29-2006, 09:38 AM
Here is another interesting point Rev. Will the esteemed mayor, the next time there is an accident at the salt dome, pull the firefighters out because its the gas companies problem?

Check into the past ownership of the city's new central fuel depot. Rumor has it that it was a person with the initials C S. Why is the city taking a piece of prime property, that could be putting tax dollars into the coffers, and making it city owned with no tax money recieved. Yes, the city needs a central location, but not there!

After the mayor "fired" the Corps and hired a local company did anyone think to check and see who owned this company? Could it be someone he has been in business with in the past? Would the be ethical if true?

Yes, I have extreme ill will with the mayor.

As far as Mr Moore goes, any vote by him, on anything related to bike trails, would be an extreme conflict of interest. After reading one of his columns in the newspaper a while back, asking people to 'buy Petal first" I had to wonder when he was going to move his business across the river. It would go belly up..... but practice what you preach Jimmy. If the trail gets built, look for him to open some type shop near it, like the one he had at Gateway (that went belly up).

Kudos to Chief Shelborn for hiring all of the experienced officers from Hattiesburg. Saves the tax payers money in training expenses. I guess Wynn's lack of leadership is Petals gain!
