You're being insensitive. They're "evacuees" not "refugees". :smt118
I'll call them targets if they try that crap around here.

Houston (AP)
"Houston police arrest eight New Orleans Katrina refugees (gang members)for 11 recent murders and other violent crimes."
Ah yeah, H'burg needs less police 'cause crime is down, huh? Or maybe just not reported. I guess what we don't know can't hurt us.All my fishing rod and reels were stolen off my front porch one night and i didnt report it,I thought why bother.

No, it's like by brother-in-law in Baton Rouge says. Baton Rouge got the "evacuees", Houston got the "refugees".

Yep. This had been sort of made up political correctness since hurricane blew through.
evacuee (noun) A person evacuated a dangerous area.
refugee (noun) An exile who flees for safety.
Pretty similar. In my personal book, an evacuee temporarily goes to a safe place. A refugee can't (or won't) go back. Refugee absolutely applies to many Katrina 'evacuees.' Particularly from New Orleans. ;)

I remember right after Katrina the media was saying "refugee" and so was I. It was correct. But then, I suppose because there were a lot of minorities involved, it was changed to "evacuee". Not exactly sure why this was supposed to have some sort of negative connotation. :smt102
I was just ribbing ole hawk, but I was sorta surprised that the news outlet he quoted had used the term refugee, since I though it was verboten.

I've been 'corrected' a few time for using refugee ... but in many cases it's the correct term.

Ole Hawk needs to be ribbed from time to time. :-D
