Tennessee "Crack Tax" brings in nearly $2 million in first year
During its first year, Tennessee's "Crack Tax" has brought in nearly $2 million dollars in state revenue.
The illegal substances tax went into effect last January.
Basically, drug dealers are supposed to pay taxes on illegal drugs and alcohol.
They pay confidentially, and when they do, they get a stamp.
If they're caught without the stamp, they'll be prosecuted for not only selling drugs, but for not paying their taxes too.
All money made from the stamps goes to fighting drugs.

I just don't understand how you can apply a tax to an illegal substance.

Then you really haven't paid much attention to government. :smt118 Listen to the song "Tax Man" by the Beatles once and you'll begin to get a little better understanding of it. :-D
Two things in life are certain - death and taxes - the only difference is that death doesn't get worse every year.

Sounds a little bit like "don't ask, don't tell"...where it's really only an issue if you caught.
I've often heard people say that we should just legalize drugs and tax them like alcohol and tobacco...

That's my opinion. Legalize them. I've never tried them, and I don't intend to start. But let's take a whack at this again.

isn't that a perfect example of the "two faces of government"? one hand slapping u for doing something bad, and the other hand outturned to take the money!!!!!!:smt011
The dopers are going to do it anyway and make so much money it's digusting. Why not double the penalty and fines if they don't have the stamp and use that money against them? Fighting ' the war on drugs ' is like trying to empty the Gulf of Mexico with a teaspoon.About all the Police can do is keep them nervous.

Yeah, I've said legalize them for years now. If you could bring the price down to say $5 an ounce for cocaine, then people wouldn't have to murder and rob you for crack money. The drug dealers would go out of business because R.J. Nabisco has a store on every corner selling cigarettes, marijuana, and cocaine. On top of all that, our farmers could finally make a decent living mixing in marijuana plants with their crop.

Too simple and would put 3/4's of the govt out of work. Then what :smt102
I don't know about 3/4, but it's definitely a self-sustaining bureaucracy. I deplore bureaucracy and most people who are bureaucrats. :smt011
I can faintly see the possibility of legalizing marijuana in the future after it's been effectively decriminalized. I'd like to try it after it's legalized. The studies in Australia released last week will definitely help in the fight. I just wish the people fighting for legalization weren't all cheech-and-chong-type stoners.

I agree with your thoughts IGID. They are going to do it anyway, so why not double the penalty.

Hence my thread title, "Do What???" I'm a little confused by the whole process... I mean, I get it, but I don't GET it, y'know?
