Twenty years ago today the Challenger space shuttle exploded shortly after take-off.

Do you remember where you were?

It's hard to believe it was 20 years ago. I was sitting on the floor of my third grade classroom, watching the launch on a television that had been rolled into the room on one of those big carts. I remember we all turned to look at our teacher who was standing behind us, but she was running to the tv to turn it off. She told us to go back ot our seats and get out our spelling lists. We asked her what had happened, why she turned the tv off, and she told us it was because the launch was over, there was nothing more to see.

I was a Junior in high school and by chance was at home alone "sick." I just remember watching the launch and then thinking, "where did it go?" I remember the news reporters being just as confused as I was.

I was in the 10th grade and my teacher had made it a big deal to watch it because of the teacher being on the space shuttle.. We were in the library watching it on the push cart and the teacher said oh my god, turned off the tv and sent us back to class. Then the rumors started going around school about what had happened. If I remember correctly they sent each class back to the library for an hour to watch the news coverage..

I was in 1st grade (this is dating all of us), and sitting on the floor waiting to see the teacher in space who was going to show us stuff. I was excited. I don't remember seeing a launch before. We turned it on right about the time the shuttle exploded. We really didn't understand that THAT wasn't what was supposed to happen. I honestly didn't know anything had gone wrong. I remember hearing the commentators talking about it and what was happening. I remember being disappointed that I wasn't going to get to see anyone in zero-g. That was my prevailing feeling at the moment. We were going to watch people floating in space, and now I had to get back to math and board stories. I remember following the news stories later and the conclusions for the explosion. I was a peculiar kid.

And you haven't changed one bit! :-D

(Admit it, you left yourself wide open.)

Dating you??? Dude, I was a student at USM sitting in the Hub Grill (now known as Seymores) hanging out watching the "big screen" with a few buddies when whatever it was we were watching was pre-empted by the launch.

I was at home sick (actually sick!) -- and in 10th grade -- also in high school, guy. That's so wild. I was watching it at home live, as well.

Well, there's really no way to know how old everyone is, unless they let on in some ways... this lumps us together in one thread where conclusions can be accurately made...
Must have been nice going to USM when the basketball team was winning...

I wouldn't say peculiar... If I had friends, they may say that... my employees think that...

Really? I wouldn't have put you that much older. Then again, I'm so not good at determining people's ages. :smt102

I was pretty young, so I do not really remember when it happened.

I remember it vividly. It was a painful day for all of us at Clinton High School, especially those of us who stopped everything to watch history be made and then go up in flames.

I was 17 years old and a junior at HHS. Remember watching on TV in our History class when the explosion happened. It was horrible. Still have Time Magazine issue of the explosion.
