Last spring I put out some dianthus and vinca dot. The vinca dot grew and bloomed very well (bloomed throughout the winter), but I was a bit disappointed with my dianthus. It's blooming (even now), but it hasn't grown nearly as tall as the ones I had at home, which got to about 2' tall (mine here are basically ground cover  ).
At any rate...recommendations on what I can plant this year...and when? Lots of shade at my place.

Thanks QM. I have to say that I don't really understand the fascination with hostas. I apparently have one in one of the front beds, but...:smt102 I don't recall them really growing where I was before. And I don't remember them in my grandma's beds either. :smt102

Pinion pine. Scrub pine. Sagebrush (which I'm highly allergic to..had to sell my first beater car because it didn't have AC and I couldn't drive with the windows down. Eyes would swell shut). Russian olive. (lovely purple flowers) Yucca. Joshua trees.
Brown grass. :-D
We use lots of xeriscaping (rocks). :-D

Fuzzis, hostas are old Southern plants that love shade and moisture. When grouped together, a lot of them are just beautiful. One single plant is like a sheep that got lost from the herd.
Could I plant some of them around an oak tree? That's the most prominent feature of the front yard. (I don't have the greenest thumb, but I do like to have things in the yard)

Perhaps I'll put some around the base of tree.

Thanks, QM. I'll keep that in mind for later.
