By Elaine Woo, Times Staff Writer

Coretta Scott King, the dignified and determined widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who assumed her murdered husband's burden as chief symbol of the civil rights movement and fiercely guarded his legacy — often in ways that drew pointed criticism — has died. She was 78.

King, who had heart problems and had suffered a major stroke in 2005, died during the night, her family said in a statement.

My best friend and I have had a serious disagreement about this today, and I'm still smarting (and pissed off) about the whole thing.

I don't necessarily believe, given who the Kings were and what they stood for, that the comments were out of line, i.e., they were comments the Kings would have, and did, made. The Rev. Lowery helped Dr. King found the SCLC, and remained close to CSK. I believe he knew them well enough that he wouldn't have done anything that either one of them would have disapproved of. In talking with some others this afternoon, we came to the conclusioin that perhaps it wasn't so much the words that were off but rather the tone of those words, in that Maya Angelou's words were rather pointed at times as well yet her reception was different.

I cannot help but feel that Jimmy Carter's refusal to shake Bush's hand was somehow more offensive in that he made the political more personal.

As Rush said today, all the people that attacked President Bush instead of honoring Mrs.King during her funeral made fools of themselves and embarrass the few Democrates that still have any sense left. A funeral is a time to honor someone, not to make statements you think they might have made when they were alive. Sickening.
