I am partial to Community New Orleans blend or Starbucks but I don't know the name of it- not the Kenya it is too stout. I buy it at Wal-Mart or Corner Market. I have also found a mail order coffee that I like- Boca Java. They sell many types of coffee and tea. Lots of different blends and flavors if you like that kind of stuff. They even have an Elvis- peanut butter bannana coffee! Folgers and Maxwell house now taste like dirt because I am so used to drinking other stuff. You can really tell the difference when you get into some of the other blends. Breakfast blends are always good.

I love coffee! Right now I'm into the Folgers Coffeehouse Series, and I really like the 100% Colombian which is a dark roast and has a very smooth & rich taste. It doesn't leave that bitter taste in your mouth like most coffees do. I also like Folders Hazelnut. I drink about 3 cups of coffee per day. :coffe:

Hey Doc!
Try Seattle Drip's Latte with a shot a caramel sauce (not caramel syrup) -- it's delicious! In stores I love to buy the coffee beans and grind them myself. Makes for a much, much better brew.
Happy Java!

aaaaah coffee. its the life blood for me. i like it all as long as its coffee, not all this other junk that is supposed to be coffee. hot, strong and black. i pefer maxwell orig., and community med. roast. after the storm, there was not a drop to be found. i had to go for 3 days without. won`t never happen again. i now carry a one burner propane stove and the old style perculator pot plus a 2 cup mr. coffee elec. so i`m good to go anytime.

Maxwell House master blend, but I am fond of CDM (rich hickory roast). I used to love the flavored blends on the weekends. It was a treat to get up to a pot of butter pecan, french vanilla, irish creme, etc. Working 2 jobs, I don't have much free time as before, so I tend to stick with the regular wake me joe...

Doc, she's soooo right. My fav. is costa rican varieties, which really shows you how addicted I am to this stuff.
I'm glad to know someone else loves Seattle Drip, too. They are amazing in the customer service realm, I think!

A woman I work with was a missionary in Brazil for a number of years. She told me today that you've not had real coffee until you drink a Brazillian roast. She said it is ground up finer than sand so that all the good *coffee parts* get into the coffee...whatever that means!

a friend brought me back some from brazil. juan and his burro had just brought it down from the mountain, and it was fresh out of the oven and ground right then. i think is was still warn when i got it, well it wasn`t really, but it was the best coffee i`ve ever had. yea, you get all the flavor that way. he brought it to me in a dark brown jar.yum, yum

ha, I have to have my coffee before I'll speak in the morning. Started drinking it in 8th grade! It's a big part of our family culture... it's like a rite of passage when you start drinking it.

I personally drink Folgers all the time- Classic Roast. I like a lot of others, but I get really bad heart burn, and I've found Folgers does it the least. They even have a Smooth Roast now that has less acid in it!!

Its Community or Starbucks in our house. Sometimes we go for SBC.

Doc - You're right about the fresh ground stuff; the extra flavor and aroma are awesome. We don't do it often (too lazy I think), but it just makes it more special when we do.

Dunkin Donuts coffee is the best, when I can get it. There's a Dunkin in Metaire, LA, a long trip but worth it.
In Shreveport there's a place that sells Southen Belle, a blended coffee
that's real good too. Have to go to get my Dunkin Donuts this morning !

Okay, I had to pull this thread back out.

We bought a coffee bean grinder over the break. MAN I didn't know what I was missing.

We first sampled Starbuck's Christmas Blend (which is wonderful).

Man this is good stuff.

I have a bean grinder myself, one at work and one at home. I actually think the Christmas blend is the worst of the Starbucks coffees, it gives me heartburn the stuff is too acidic for me.

I've been getting beans from Java Werks lately. I have the Red Sea blend now, it is delectable.

Been drinking coffee since my grandma fixed it for me as a baby, sweet and blonde...just like Anna Nicole!

I use a french press to brew my coffee, if you like good coffee, it's the way to go. I doesn't filter out the coffee oils that a paper filter does, soo GOOD.

Community Medium Roast, or Seattle's Best. No chicory, please. No flavors. No cream or sugar.
I would love to grind my coffee in the morning and make it in my French press. French press makes the best coffee. Most mornings though, I have to throw some coffee in the electric and let it do its thing because there are cats gnawing on my legs demanding food.
I keep a supply of those Folger's coffee singles on hand too. Good to have for emergencies (you can boil some water over sterno) and for travel. When my sister took me to England a few years ago, I carried a handful of them. She said, "oh they have coffee, we won't need those" -- uh-huh. Second morning, "do you have those coffee things?" Like me, she couldn't get her shoes on the right feet without a cup of coffee in her hand!!
The bags are not as good as a real, brewed cup of coffee, but they're a lot better than instant.

COFFEE...now your talkin....i drink it all day long.

its all about the bean...i only drink 100% arabica...i get the generic stuff at walmart....half the price of the name brands who use the inferior robusta bean but taste soooo much better.

A French press is one of those glass jobbies with the black domed top and a little mesh plunger. You put the ground coffee in, add water that is almost but not quite boiling, stir, let it sit for 3-4 minutes, and then depress the plunger. It's especially good for making small amounts. Like somebody said above, it doesn't lose the oils and makes a wonderful cup of coffee. Of course, with the way you mistreat yours, I wouldn't bother! ;)

Caramel Macchiatto is one of my favs too. I've been drinking coffee since I was a wee one. I like mine sweet and light, any blend - I'm not too picky. :) I drink coffee all day and into the evening. :) I've been thinking of trying a coffee press, but seems like a lot of notes! I have my coffee pot programmed so I just roll out of bed and grab a cup. Most who know me know not to even speak until I've gotten at least one in my system! :) I even bought one of the Mr. Coffee's you use for camping. Now I'm set wherever I go.

ROFLOL!!! Now I have to tell a story which will "out" me to a few people. Ok, after Katrina, some tree people set up camp near my house. I hired them to get the trees off my house. This was early Wednesday, I had made a thermos of coffee and had it available on Tuesday. We started talking about coffee and the guy said they had a pot and heat, but they couldn't find their coffee. So I gave them some ground coffee on condition they brought me back a cup. In a little while, here comes this boy with a styrofoam cup of coffee. "Ma'm," he says," we couldn't find the filters so I strained it through a NEW sock!" You know what, there's a little bit of a cottony after-taste, but under the circumstances I was glad to get it!

NH, he said it was a new sock. That morning, I probably wouldn't have cared.
btw, one of the smarter things I did pre-Katrina was to make a thermos of coffee Sunday night. Monday morning I made a fresh pot, just before the power went out, and refilled the thermos. So that god-awful Tuesday at least I had some pretty good coffee to start the day, when I had to start dealing with everything. I still make a thermos of coffee if we're supposed to have really bad weather overnight, in case the power goes out.

When I was at Hopkins, we used to have the nastiest coffee. It was literally burnt dirt, but STRONG. We were in a corner of the hospital where four offices converged on one open area. We were all guys around the same age, so they called our office suite the locker room. I remember one woman asking, "did Moses put this coffee on before he went up the mountain?" Another woman asked us if the coffee was so black because we put all our dirty gym socks in the pot.

We’d ride until we got tired, and then we’d set up camp. I could stand riding a few hundred miles and sleeping in a tent, but I couldn’t make it without my little press and can of sterno the next morning. There’s something about sitting out in the chill of the morning, holding a warm cup of good coffee, then hitting the open road again.

I use a french press to brew my coffee, if you like good coffee, it's the way to go. I doesn't filter out the coffee oils that a paper filter does, soo GOOD.

I saw that on TV the other week. Sounds good, but I don't want to make an ordeal out of a cup of coffee. I might try it though.

Gotta admit something here.....I've never been to Starbucks! Am I" out of the loop "or what?

NO! I don't buy bottled water either. I'm just not that cool.

My wife says I'm a coffee racist because I put in so much creamer that the coffee is practically white.

You should try a cup of coffee sometime.

I wouldn't go that far. But I like a bold blend, a fair amount of powdered creamer (I just don't like liquid creamer, milk, or half and half), two packs of Splenda, and then a shot of Sugar Free Kahlua syrup.
I'm about to go for cup #4 today in just a moment.

That's the most nauseating thing I've ever heard of.:) A bold blend? What diference does it make?

A French press is one of those glass jobbies with the black domed top and a little mesh plunger. Great line. I'll have to remember that one.

I'm sub-human until the caffiene hits my system. Not a pleasant sight, trust me. I'm not a morning person at all!!!

I'm neither pleasent nor unpleasant. I simply don't acknowledge anyone's existance until after one cup.

Now, you've done it. Gotta find some.

My mother told me today that the ONLY way to drink coffee is to have a grinder, grind the beans, and then use an electric percolator.

Opinions?

She's pert-near right. Perked coffee is delicious. That's what I drank in grammar school Louisianne perked. Hardly hear of percolators anymore, but they are out there. Beats a Mr.Coffee for longevity and tastes better too. Don't know why I ever changed over. May go back now. Thanks for the reminder, Doc.

Grinding your own beans is the best. We bought a coffee maker with a built in grinder. I now want the Melitta Smart Mill and Brew! So, it is nice not to have a coffee maker and a grinder to take up too much room. If you ever go to a beanery and can by your own beans make sure they look almost waxy or wet, that is actually the bean oil. The flavor from grinding your own bean is wonderful. Eight O' Clock is a great bean coffee you can find at your local grocery store.
I heard the coffee press is a must. I just don't have time for that. I like to set my alarm on my coffe pot and have it ready for me.

Someone upthread mentioned chicory. The only way you can rightly drink coffee with chicory is IN New Orleans and WITH real cream. Otherwise, Community medium roast or Seattle's Best, black. Prefer the French press, but like Petal MisFit, I do love that little clock on the coffee pot and having it ready when I walk in the kitchen.

Saw a Hamilton Beach Percolator at K-Mart tonight. $40 I use a Cuisinart drip w/it's own bean grinder. Never had a coffee maker last as long as this one. Never had a bean grinder go out on me so fast. I recommend a separate grinder. But the coffee maker must be at least 5 years old. I'd have burned up 5 Mr. Coffee's by now. I have to make my coffee at night and set the timer. Otherwise I forget to put the carafe under the dripper and it shorts out my coffee maker. And I hate moping kitchen floors before I've had my coffee.

Mike, how are you burning them up? Leave them on? I highly recommend the kind that turn themselves off after two hours.

I agree Hermoine on the time-out feature. I had one without it catch on fire about 3 years ago, luckily I was home and able to put it out before it set the cabinet above it on fire.

I got into roasting my own beans and haven't looked back. I was dumping so much cream and sugar into my coffee just to drink it, it was disgusting. Now, I can drink my coffee black and it actually tastes GOOD!

I buy my green beans from sweetmarias.com. There is a huge difference in coffee from Sumatra vs. Ethiopia vs. Nicaragua. Learning the differences is a lot of fun and quite amazing. There is a lot that goes into roasting and brewing a good cup of coffee and once you taste a "good" cup of coffee, you'll never go back.

If anyone is interested in getting into it, let me know and I can give you some pointers. Roasting coffee isn't as hard as you think but properly roasting (or roasting coffee the way YOU want it), with proper grinding (burr grinders, not "whirly bird" grinders), with a proper extraction method (either a "good" espresso machine or a Technivorm drip machine) prodouces a cup of coffee you just wouldn't believe.

My iron turns itself off too. At this age, we need all the help like that we can get.

I love to hear people talk about roasting and grinding their own coffee. It's funny because at one time everyone did that. However, I'm not awake enough in the am to do that much work!!

Ditto on the auto-shutoff iron too. I'm scared to death of fire, seen my share of houses go up and families displaced.

Maybe one day I'll try the grinding/roasting part but for now it's Maxwell House masterblend. I know what you mean about being awake enough, I'm doing good to hit the coffee pot with the water faucet.

Some used to make their own whiskey too, until them damn revenures got into it. I can brew my own beer and wine, but not whiskey. That bites.

No. I forget to put the carafe in and the coffee drips onto the hotplate and shorts it out. The rest goes on the floor. I tend to do that in the mornings when I'm trying to fix coffee while still asleep. Of course the ones they make now HAVE to have the carafe in or the coffee just fillls up the filter cup and overflows.

That is pretty neat Walls tell us more. I love a good cup of coffee. My wife and I grind our beans. How do you keep from drying them out?

There are different schools of thought on that, but essentially you can store "green" beans for around 6 months. Once you roast them, you need to have them used within 2 weeks (I usually never go more than 1 week after roasting). After you grind them, they need to be extracted (either espresso/vacuum pot/french press/drip) within seconds (as fast as possible). Never grind more than you can use in one brew cycle. Also, never store coffee in the fridge. Store your beans in mason jars (or some other air-tight container).

If there are any "local" coffee shops in Hattiesburg, see if they roast their own beans. If so, see if you can grab some the day they roast them or the day after (but don't get more than you can use in 1-2 weeks). Ask him if he can roast between "City" and "Full City" and if so try to get those beans. Also, find out the country and plantation and report if you like that type or not.

The "whirly bird" grinders actually damage the beans and significantly change the flavor. If you can, get a good burr grinder. Those grind the beans consistently and without heating up the beans as they grind and without "shredding" the beans.

As for brewing, I'm too lazy to french press and I don't have enough money to buy a "good" espresso machine ($500-$1000 for bottom-of-the-line), so I got a Technivorm Moccamaster drip machine. It boils the water before it sprays the grinds, so the extraction temperature is around 202F (which is just about perfect for coffee extraction). Most home coffee makers extract at 180F, and that's not hot enough.

It doesn't take a lot of brains to do it all. It's a little expensive to get started. All my equipment was about $500, but it's worth it if you want a really good cup of coffee (Maxwell House, even Starbucks aren't even close to a "really good cup" ... it's something you just have to try to believe). I did a side-by-side of my old grinder + Mr. Coffee and my new grinder + Technivorm. After one sip of each, I threw my old grinder and Mr. Coffee in the trash -- it just wasn't even close.

The roasting takes between 10-15 minutes per "batch" but you can't roast more than one batch every hour or so. I usually roast 4-6 batches every week or so. Once they are roasted, it's just like normal coffee. 15 seconds or so to grind and then the brew time.

I don't have enough posts yet to post URLs, but search for sweet marias and coffee geek to learn more or if you want to get started PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Re: instant coffee. It depend on what you want. If you just want a caffeine fix and don't care what your coffee tastes like, instant is fine and fast. If I'm feeling down at work, I'll even stoop to corporate coffee for a fix :-)

When did County Market go away?

Obviously, Walls needs to move back to the Burg. Then I need to move next door, and be on hand each morning as the coffee is brewing. Oh, I will bring a pan of fresh biscuits, not wishing to be a mooch or anything.
