So you like to watch 2 sweaty guys grapple and hug and grab each other in places that men normally don't, but you don't like the idea of Brokeback Mountain? :smt102

:-D :-D

I've never liked wrestling. Just a bunch of bad actors. Besides I don't like to watch 2 sweaty guys...

On the way to Mobile for meetings, I come across a metal building that advertises some sort of local wrestling and it makes me think of the beige folding chair wrestling days. I remember my grandmother being into the matches on TV.

I do not understand the fascination with the new hyped-up, sexed-up wrestling. Perhaps we are too entertained to recieve much from the simpler form.

A while back I had an employee who wanted badly to be a wrestler. He was built for it, but was really simple-minded. He quit work to be a wrestler in some local circuit or backyard ring... not really sure which.

I loved mid south wrestling.. Saturday afternoons with jyd, Kamala, kubuki... Those were the days.. How about georgia championship wrestling with gordon soley.. The fabalous freebirds, Michael P S Hayes.. Jim cornett.. Dusty Rhodes.. Also remember saturday night wrestling on NBC with hulk hogan and Elizabeth :smt038 :smt038 ...

Now its ruined and havent really watched any wrestling since the early 1990's..

I'm not sure it they were Mid-South wrestlers, but Rick Flair and Dusty Rhodes were the best. I can remember Rick Flair saying "Ladies, you don't have to go to Disney World to ride Space Mountain", in reference to his love making.... and then Dusty Rhodes came in for a followup interview and said "Rick Flair, I've talked to some of those ladies who rode Space Mountain, and they said the ride is fun BUT it don't last that long". Now thats entertainment.

The NBC show was "Saturday Night's Main Event" and it would occasionally pre-empt Saturday Night live. My younger brother...who was like 6 or 7 at the time, loved it. Those were the days of Hogan, Andre the Giant, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, the Million Dollar Man, and Elizabeth's bf/husband who's name I can't remember..lol. I remember my brother cried a couple of years later when Sean Michaels lost a match.

When I think of Mid-South wrestling, I think of Jerry the King Lawyer and all the other second raters that were on TV on Saturday mornings in Memphis.

thanks Coneyor Belt, how could I forget

but of course, the ultimate Wrestling fan's day of riding high, was when former Wrestler, Jess "the Body" Ventura was elected Governor of Minnesota.

I started in the wrestling profession back in 84, had a lot of matches in the 80's and early 90's throughout the south, not much in recent years. I really don't like todays wrestling, but anyway after reading several of the names of different wrestlers from the old Mid-South days, I will be attending our annual Gulf Coast Wrestlers Reunion next month and some of these guys will be there. Last year we had Ernie Ladd, Bob Roop, Ronnie Garvin, Skandor Akbar, along with Gulf Coast favorites Cowboy Bob Kelly, Bobby Fields, Thomas Tate, The Wrestling Pro and many more. The reunion grows every year and I'm sure this year will be the biggest ever. I look forward to this big event every year.

Every time you guys bring up a new subject I just have to google it to see what's up. My younger sister and I used to love watching mid-south wrestling. My Dad got a huge kick out of it. They tried to recruit him when he came out of football and he used to see a lot of his former teammates and competitors in the ring.

Anyway, check out this link for the scoop on all of your old favorites:

Blackjack Mulligan, Barrry Windham Terry Funk.........Oh yes, such memories. Actually wrestling is a little over the edge sexually nowadays but it is still a good soap opera to keep up with.

Sorry Doc, I never met "Iron" Mike Sharp, but I do remember him from the Mid-South days. He also has stints in GA. and the WWF.

Speaking of the soap opera aspect, a couple of years ago, there was an article in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy that talked about how to use wrestling to teach reluctant readers (particularly boys) the elements of a story, as well as in some instances the heroic journey. I found that using wrestling as a hook was helpful with many of my Hispanic boys.

haha, this has brought up a lot of memories. I used to love wrestling, my parents didn't like me watching it that much, but they tolerated it. Whenver I was at my cousin's house we would watch it and then go out to the trampoline to practice the moves, especially the ones where you jumped from the ropes. We would drag the trampoline by the swing set and jump off of it. Looking back, I'm surprised that I am still living with all body parts in place and functioning well. This was back before they had those safety nets for trampolines, and I seem to remember a number of cement blocks in various places around the yard. , very scary.

There are many "finishing moves" from back then that you don't see any more:

The Iron Claw
The Spike
Polish Power
Cobra Clutch
DDT

And Ric Flair is the man. I read somewhere that Saturday Night's Main Event is coming back to NBC.
