Surge protectors are your friend. Woke up this morning and half of hte house didn't have power. Went out to the breaker box and flipped the one that was tripped. Came back in and still didn't have power to half the house. Called the landlord, who sent an electrician out (because the half of the house without power happened to be the kitchen). Discovered that my surge protector was fried and that was what was causing the problem.
While I will probably be out the 2 hours of overtime charge for the electrician (I'm pretty sure my landlord will make me pay for that), at least I'm not out my cell phone, my printer, and my laptop.
