Anyone here an organ donor? Thoughts on being an organ donor? Would you donate your body to science after you have passed away?

I know it's silly, but I really don't mind losing anything but my eyes. Is that odd to think that?

Our thoughts about death are rather complex. I don't particularly care what is done witih me after I'm dead, and my family and friends know that I'm an organ donor. My Sner and I have recently been discussing donation to science as well, which has the GrandSner in an uproar. She's one of those who wants a gravesite and a headstone...not just for herself but for everyone. Doesn't believe in cremation or donation.

And that's fine.

I'll give up anything....but I don't think people would want a lot of organs...I eat a lot of cajun food, if you know what I mean.

C.Belt, I used to feel the way you do. I had always told my husband they can have anything but my eyes or heart. After seeing first-hand how so many can be helped from each person...not only the organs but skin transplants also, I changed my mind. When I'm gone, I'm not going to need any part of this old body. Whatever will help someone else, they can have.

I am not a donor but I wouldn't mind giving my body if it would help someone else.

My younger sister died tragically when she was five- my parents donated her organs and someone was granted sight from her eyes. I am a donor and hope that someone will be able to make use of whatever usable stuff is left in me.

I am an organ donor. Altough I plan on wearing all of my organs out before I die but hey you never know there might be something good left. Maybe my teeth will still be good and someone can use them.

I am an organ donor.I just want to be kept alive long enough for organs to be transplanted as needed.
Let the blind man be able to see his own children.
Let the dialysis patient free of this with my kidneys.
Let the person needing a good loving heart have mine.
Don't grieve for me-rejoice others are living because of me.
My soul will have left my body and I will be looking down proudly. Use me as needed!

Just had another thought. Maybe you don't want to give your eyes up cause you think if you come back you will be reincarnated as a blind person/ lol=just a thought

My original reasoning was that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, but I got over that years ago.

Can you let your family make that choice? I think I have watched too many TV shows where the dr. didn't work as hard on an organ donor so he could help someone who has been waiting a long time. Call me chicken, but I just want to know that a dr. is going to give me his best first then worry about shipping me out in pieces.

Ultimately in most places, it is your family that makes the decision. You can have your driver's license state that you're an organ donor, you can have you organ donation card signed and witnessed and on your person but if your family doesn't support your decision, you're probably NOT going to be an organ donor. That's why it's extremely important to have these things very clearly spelled out. After the Schiavo fiasco, my Sner, her boy, and I all went to have our "stuff" updated. We all have living wills, as well as durable power of attorney. If my Sner and her boy are incapicitated or unavailable to perform such services, I've had very detailed conversations wtih two of my best friends who know my wishes and are willing to carrying them out (and are named in my durable POA).

Wynn has signed away his organs in case something should happen to him.... of course the only people who signed up for my organs were the elephant trainers down @ the Barnum & Bailey Circus....i guess the trainers do have a dangerous job though. :smt006
