I love my new little puppy Elphie, but the housebreaking thing is DRIVING ME CRAZY!! :smt119 I'm trying to train her to the puppy pads, but it's not working. Every time she goes on the carpet, I spank her and make her stand on the pad until I'm finished cleaning it up. She still hasn't learned to use the pad after about 2 weeks now. Any suggestions to help? :smt102

Take her outside as much as you can.. Especially after she eats..

Works for us..

ive had a puppy since he was born and it took a while, but bringing him outside as much as we could and putting down the puppy pads in teh spot he went to the bathroom most often seemed to get him into a pattern. thats the most important thing is make sure there is a pattern...bring her outside as soon as she wakes up from sleeping or even a nap and after she eats. also, mixing vinegar and water and spraying it in certain areas in the house will keep dogs away from using the bathroom in that area...its worked for me so far! good luck though, just remember it takes time.

Crate Training. Buy a crate keep her in it for awhile. When she starts to whine take her outside. After awhile she'll know that to go to the bathroom she needs to go outside. Dogs do not like to go to the bathroom where they sleep and eat. So keep a small bowl of food and water in the crate with her. Give her a toy or too. I would suggest not putting paper in the crate because that is just something a puppy will tear up and have all over the place.

Sackett...I was reading somewhere recently that some people have difficulty with crates. Think they're cruel, but the piece I was reading said that after an initial adjustment, dogs actually like their crates...reminds them of being in caves, etc? I don't have a dog so I didn't pay very close attention to the article.

Monkey, go to PetSmart and READ. They have a few books on the subject that are very helpful. I would do it fast because it's possible to confuse your dog to the point that they hold it till your not around and then go. They will also hide it in your house.

Dogs have no idea why they are being punished after the fact. Sackett has the right idea about the dog box. Until they are house broke, don't let them have the run of the house and take them out after every feeding. From experience, the dog box thing works the best and fastest. Like sackett said, they won't go where they sleep and eat unless it's a extreme emergency and you don't see the signs they need to be let out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've got a crate and she seems to do ok during the day, but at night, I want her out of the crate and with me! I'll just have to suck it up for a while to get her used to the routine.

I had a similar problem with my dog and I contacted a Vet/Behavior specialist in Sumarall she solved problem in one month. She interviews you and looks at the dog and designs a plan of action.

Is Elphie the pup in the picture??? Precious by the way.....Yorkies are very much a breed of their own...tempermental, selfish and rule the roost...

Old Lady,
YEs, Elphie is the one in the pic. She definitely has a wonderful temperment, but she isn't getting it. I know it's my fault. My mother said she remembered that when we had had a little dog before they are extremely difficult to housetrain. Our two cocker spaniels did wonderfully. It's my fault that she's not housebroken as I'm just not sure the right way to do it.
