How Do I Prune My Sago Palm?

Oh, Maggie................the cold weather has burned my huge sago palm. It's fronds are yellow. Can I prune it or should I just leave it alone?

Y'all got to COVER that stuff!!!! They cost too much to be freezing! Y'all should see my poor lemon tree right off the back porch.....nice little tarp tent it's hanging out in right now......redneck as all getout, but I stupidly planted it in the yard instead of a big pot......anyway....back to sago palms.....

Cover it but don't prune it yet. Once warmer weather and sun get here, with the proper fertilizer, it may come recover. If the whole thing has turned yellow/brown then, well, it may be a goner.

If it does recover and you still think it needs pruning then you can prune the stalks. But don't prune it now.

Re: How Do I Prune My Sago Palm?

JMC has it right. Man, that cold snap nuked them this year.

The branches that are brown are goners...they won't green back up. I'd cut those off, but as JMC pointed out, not yet.....if nothing else, they'll help protect the trunk if we get another hard freeze.

If the sago ain't totally dead, you'll get new growth and branches at the top, but not at the trunk where the old branches were. You might get pups down there, though, as in new little sagos popping out of the trunk.

Our climate zone is real marginal for sagos......gotta' cover them up if you don't want frost damage.

I hate to hear that. Mine was huge- I didn't have anything big enough to cover it with. We also have 5 or 6 little babies the big one put out last year that we transplanted all over the yard. I just hate to lose the big one. It fruited big time this past fall.

Mine was encroanching over the steps some and I pruned the tips that were hanging over... The entire fronds are not all frost bit... But much of it is... I am an hour south from there and did not have quite the temp y'all did... i was three of four degrees warmer... Almost t-shirt weather in fact....

Re: How Do I Prune My Sago Palm?

I covered ours....same thing happened. I'm hoping that the protection I gave at least saved the trunk and roots. I'm not sure what kinda shape all the sagos are going to be in with the extreme colds we have had - and apparently still going to have. I'm kinda torn about cutting them now versus later. Everything I ever heard about growing plants was to cut the dead off to keep the energy in other vital areas. What do ya'll think? With the big cold coming at the end of the week, would it be better to go ahead and cut the dead, cover and try to insulate the trunk from the next freeze, and hope that new growth will come up in Spring?

I called Mike Keith about my Sagos, he said even if we would have covered ours, with the extreme cold for as long as we had it, they would have still been damaged.

He also said DO NOT cut them yet, wait for warmer weather, and new growth to appear

I see them all over the place, and they all look the same.......dead

Re: How Do I Prune My Sago Palm?

Scarlett, I am just now seeing this...you got some pretty good advice from swamp man...DO NOT cut it back now. The fronds that are brown will not green up but they will protect the rest of the plants. As cold as it was for so long probably not much you could have done.

Anyone who has a smaller bush could cover it with a LARGE heavy duty moving box and cover that with an old blanket or two. Just remember to uncover when you get a warm day. MAKE SURE to water your plants good if it has been dry for a few days...hydration always helps. Others who have small to med. plants could build a small wood frame with 2x4's, cover it with a tarp or clear visqueen and put a large wattage light bulb, like a flood light or heat lamp bulb inside...just make sure the bulb doesn't touch the plastic and that you use safety with the electric cords. You sure don't want to start a fire!

My son owns a Landscape company and people are so worried about their palms. He says leave it alone. The new green will come!

    Useless factoid incoming...

Oddly enough, a sago is alot closer to being a pine than it is to being a palm....not a palm at all, but a conifer.

I'm headed down to the coast tonight. It'll be interesting to see how the sagos down there did.
