Re: House District 101 Runoff: Fillingane or McHard?
Can't vote in the actual election, so it doesn't matter which of these two win.....or does it? Should we look at it like...Who will Joe Gavin have to beat in one year? I sure hope he does run again in the next year election.....I wonder if whoever does win, knows that they have that one year to do alot of proving of theirself????
Re: House District 101 Runoff: Fillingane or McHard?
It's not hard to believe that a bunch of slick TV and newspaper ads could get you a handful of votes, even if you just moved here a few years ago. Money talks.
Re: House District 101 Runoff: Fillingane or McHard?
I recall some combination of mailings, TV ads, newspaper ads, and radio spots for several of the candidates. In my view, it's totally unfair to negatively label a candidate who is working within very precise campaign finance and residency law. If there is a feeling that the campaign finance system is flawed, then voter action is required to initiate reform. If there is a feeling that campaign finance guidelines have been violated, then contact the office of the Secretary of State for clarification.

I absolutely agree. Play fair, my friend.

Re: House District 101 Runoff: Fillingane or McHard?
The last thing we need is another lawyer in the legislature.
I believe Harveys long history in the county and blue collar roots better represent the whole district. Most folks in this district are not wealthy insurance defense lawyers from Illinois that have full time nannys and live in Canebrake.
If she wins this election was bought with insurance money, the same people screwing Mississippians as we speak.

:smt038 I agree that Mr. Fillingane is the likely winner, but I think that Ms McHard would do a much better job. I would like for the winner to present a new bill before the state legistative body that would address the issue of "special elections". If a person runs for an office and is elected for a 4 year term, that is a contract with the tax payers that they represent. If that person then desides to run for another office and not resign from the current elected office that they hold, and it then requires a "special election", then they should have to foot the bill instead of the tax payers. It would have been more "cost effective" for the tax payers/voters if Joey Fillingane had resigned and run for the senate seat in the general election. We would then have had a much better turn out to fill his un-expired term and it would have leveled the playing field for Post 101.

I noticed that webster's been visiting, but hasn't posted anything. I was hoping we'd get a little rundown on how he felt his campaign went, and what his plans for the future are.

And he posted the following here a little over a year ago:
"Just stumbled onto this site again….to give another DB update….I ran into him the other night with his wife at a local restaurant. Recently our Public Service Commissioner resigned in this district, and our State Senator Tom King appears to be on the short list. If King is appointed, DB said he is making plans to run in the special election."

Maybe Beavers' message will resonate more with the voters in Senate District 44.

Unlikely.
His best course of action would probably be to concentrate on building a law practice, build credibility by example, organize his life so that folks talk positively about him ... rather spending so much time talking about himself in both the first person and the third person.
His voter count absolutely proves that you can't spin yourself ... even if you have imaginary friends and personal aliases handling the job. He's a smart guy ... he just doesn't "get it."

DB's going to have to reform himself if he ever wants to get elected to public office. Being elected among your peers is one thing, but convincing people you're the right person for the job is another thing all together.
He doesn't have a presence of trust, and that's very important. I don't know what it is that makes me distrust him based on his appearance, but there's something there that makes my gut say 'whoa'.

Re: Who will win the House District 101 special election?
Mornin' ladies and gentlemen..
Hope you all had a great Christmas!
The election between Erica McHard and Harvey Fillingane is Tuesday, January 2nd. You guys have gotten uncharacteristically "quiet" about it. I'm very much interested in what you think. You all helped me - tremendously - "think through" some things in the first election round. Don't stop now!
I've encountered a "ton" of folks the last few days who are indicating they are just not going to go vote. I hope they change their mind! There was only about 15% turnout in most of the District in the first round - likely will be less on January 2nd - that's sad.
Since election night, I have had lengthy conversations with Erica McHard, Eddie Stephenson, and Harvey Fillingane - at their requests. I did not impose myself or thoughts on them. I swapped a lengthy email exchange with Dale Beavers.
What's going to happen next Tuesday, you think?
By the way, I gathered up my family while they were home and had a GREAT (and delicious) evening at Donnanelle's. Thanks, Ellie, for your hospitality and a wonderful conversation! The "other proprietor" had other responsibilities that night, and we missed you!
Happy New Year everybody!
Joe
